A FEW WORDS ON
GHANA
by Anthony Jean-Claude


Over the course of my life, I have had the opportunity to make
several trips to Africa, including to the country of Ghana. Back
here in the U.S., Ghana has not always had the highest profile, so
I want to take some time today to share a little information
about it.



The country, located in sub-Saharan West Africa, had 24 million
residents as of the 2010 census. It has been independent since
1957 and has a strong recent record of successful democratic
government. Notably, Ghana uses English as its national
language, despite its neighbors speaking French.


Ghana occupies an important leadership role in its region and
internationally. Its president recently attended an emergency
summit on the situation in Mali with other sub-Saharan African
leaders, and nations ranging from Japan to Australia operate
programs within it. For the most up-to-date information on
Ghana, visit the government’s website at www.ghana.gov.gh.
