Wing Commander Y V Krishna Rao (Retd)

BIRTH

Born on 21 Sep 1942, in an agricultural family, in Nimmakuru village, Krishna District to
Sri Y Sri Rama Murthy garu and Smt Sampurnamma.

STUDIES

I was a student up to 20 years and Graduated from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada in
the year 1962.

JAWAN

Joined Indian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in 1963 and retired voluntarily as a Wing
Commander in 1983. During my 20 years service in the Indian Air Force, I had the rare
opportunity to serve the country actively during 1965 and 1971 operations against Pakistan.

BUSINESS

I was a businessman from 42-61 years. During my business stint I had taken up prestigious
works like drilling large number of deep bore wells for world famous and Gunnies World
Record Holder, Ramoji Film City, providing drinking water to tribals in remote Orissa Hilly
areas, increasing the success rate (from less than 50 % to 95 % by using hydraulic drilling
rig) of Agricultural bore wells drilled for Small and Marginal farmers in AP etc. Incidentally the
RFC work started with our drilling work. Supplied Gen Sets to Farmers at affordable prices
and sold higher capacity Gen Sets to industries like sugar Factories etc.

KISAN

I became a Kisan for the past 5 years. I moved from Hyderabad to my native village
Nimmakuru in Krishna district 5 years ago to practice, experiment, promote and help
Organic, Bio Dynamic, Natural and Carbon Farmers. Some of the experiments are given
below :

SAVING WATER

Saving of water by adopting SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method and leveling
agricultural fields using Laser Guided Land Leveler, which is accurate to mm level.

REDUCING LABOUR COST

Reducing the cost of labor by introducing mechanization for leveling and for sowing paddy
seeds as well as fertilizers using Tractor drawn Seed Cum Fertilizer Drill.
REDUCING COST OF INPUTS

Saving cost of cultivation by reducing the inputs like seeds, Fertilizers, Pesticides,
Herbicides etc. Least External Input Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) is the key for making
agriculture sustainable.

Around the 60s almost no external inputs were brought into the village by farmers, whereas
today, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, sprayers for spraying pesticides etc. tractors
for tilling/puddling etc., petrol, diesel, gunnies etc. are all being brought into the village. Prior
to 60s the total inflow of funds into a village used to be more than the out flow. Today it is the
other way round and Inorganic agriculture is no longer sustainable.

REMUNERATIVE PRICE TO FARMERS

At present most farmers are resorting to distress sale, due to urgency of funds, lack of
convenient storage facility, etc. Farmers need convenient storage facility, loan against pledge
of agri produce, market intelligence, value addition to their produce and marketing facility, so
that they could get remunerative price.

SIMPLE (NGO)

I am the founder Managing Trustee of an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) started in
the year 2006, by name SOCIETY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF PUBLIC LIFE AND ENVIRONMENT
(SIMPLE).
SIMPLE

SIMPLE started by me mainly to save the farmers from committing suicides, since agriculture
is no longer sustainable due to present agricultural policies, practices etc.. The other
important aspects are health of humans, animals, soils and saving environment from heavy
pollution. The vision of SIMPLE is given below :

                               Vision of SIMPLE on Agriculture

Our Society, SIMPLE is committed to simplify farming operations, to standardize operating
procedures and lay down schedules, crop wise as well as for improvement of soil fertility,
using least external inputs, saving precious water, by combining ancient indigenous
methods and latest innovative technologies, totally eliminating chemical manures, pesticides,
herbicides etc., thus making agriculture sustainable as well as to produce plentiful and truly
enriched crops resulting in healthy and tasty organic food having longer shelf life with the aim
of improving human health and also to save environment from chemical pollution.

Our commitment also includes development of marketing tie ups for sale of organic food and
ensure better returns to organic farmers, also through value addition and by earning Carbon
Credits, so that many more farmers could be encouraged to take up natural, organic, carbon
and bio dynamic farming.

Our ultimate goal is to educate the interested farmers all over the world and guide them
towards our philosophy.
ACTIVITIES OF SOCIETY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF PUBLIC LIFE AND
            ENVIRONMENT - (SIMPLE )

SIMPLE is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), working on ‘no profit and no loss’ basis
started with the following aims:

   1. Promotion of Organic, Natural, Carbon and Bio-dynamic farming, keeping in mind the
health of humans, animals, soils and environment.

   2. Good Health for all, with emphasis on providing clean mineral water in rural villages for
      the economically backward.

   3. Welfare of Senior citizens especially in rural villages, by establishing Day Care Centers
      and Homes for the Aged.

   4. Promote job oriented education to the rural poor by establishing Talent Schools, with a
view to bring out the hidden talents of the rural poor, including fine arts, sports, games
etc. After completion of the course, the students could either get a job or take up
      self-employment.

   5. Undertake any developmental works in rural villages sponsored and funded by Non
      Resident Villagers (NRVs)

   6. Share and transfer various proven technologies with/to the other societies/bodies
located all over the world with similar motive.

   7. Adopt SIX SIGMA and attain ISO standards.

SIMPLE current initiatives:

Organic,Natural, Carbon and Bio-Dynamic farming (GOOD EARTH) :

Improve soil health by increasing the organic carbon in the soil and ensuring development of
healthy Humus.

Adopt and propagate various Growth promotional methods and plant extract bio pesticides as
per “Vruksha Ayurveda”, practically tested and proven by the farmers.

Propagation of preparation and usage of “Panchagavya” an ideal alternative to chemical
manures.

Promotion of 1) Effective Microorganisms technology, 2) Bio-Dynamic farming methods,
3) Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) Technology, 4) Ancient agricultural practices and
4) Development of Innovative Technologies by farmers in order to bring down the cost of
production of various crops and produce healthy and nutritionally rich food. Dissipation of
important information to other farmers.

Promote System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of cultivation in Paddy and adoption to
other suitable crops, as water is saved in this method. To advocate the careful
utilization/conservation of water, as the same is going to be a scarce commodity in future.

Advocate total elimination of chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides by carrying out
experiments with alternatives such as bio growth promoters/pesticides etc, and Bio Dynamic
preparations. Wide publicity to be given to farmers by conducting Farmers Meets.

Production of Compact Discs on various Organic/Bio Dynamic farming methods and innovative
experiments and ensure that they reach the huge farming community through electronic media
and using audio visual methods at various Farmer Meets.

Provide training to farmers in giving Value addition to their agricultural produce, as they could
get a much better price to their produce after value addition.

Help farmers to market their produce at a much better price by tying up directly with stores
selling organic produce. The middlemen are to be avoided. Encourage educated unemployed
to take up direct selling to the consumers and receive orders through emails and making
dispatches through courier/transport service.

Establish a center at Nimmakuru village, with various facilities such as soil/water testing
facility, facilities to train farmers on various agricultural methods and software to recognize the
deficiency in the leaves and identify the bacterial, fungal and viral diseases by inspecting the
leaves.

Select and train Resource Persons (selected amongst farmers) on various aspects of organic
farming as well as pest management/control and to identify nutrient deficiency/pest attack etc.
Provide mobile phones with video recording facility to the resource persons so that they could
record affected crop and MMS to the center seeking advice on the use of bio fertilizers/bio
pesticides etc depending on the deficiency/decease.

Provide all bio fertilizers/pesticides to the resource persons, so that the same is readily
available for use in the fields of the farmers. Resource persons need to arrange a sprayer
solely for use of bio fertilizers/pesticides and arrange spraying besides supplying the material.

Raise good quality breed cow calves and give it to interested poor and marginal farmers, so
that they besides making a living could also prepare quality manure/compost/B D products/
Panchagavya, sufficient for more than 10 Ha with one single cow.

Select innovative farmers and support them to carry out fruitful experiments on various aspects
of agriculture such as, raising good quality and high yielding variety seeds/ saplings suitable
for local conditions, improvement in water/manure/pesticide/other agricultural management
techniques/practices and value addition to the produce, which would be given wide publicity
after successful final trials using electronic media and audio visual equipments.

Provide different working models useful for adoption by farmers on various agricultural
activities at the center. Selection of technology/model suitable to the interested farmers
depending on their local conditions and transfer of know how as well as on site guidance
through trained resource persons.

Select farmers proficient in a particular field and in different crops and arrange farmers meet,
so that the information is dissipated to other farmers.

GOOD HEALTH :

In view of over a billion population in India it would be a herculean task for any Government to
ensure that their health programs reach interior rural areas and this responsibility is to be
shared by many voluntary organizations.

Organize regular programs at different locations addressing farmers and other interested
groups highlighting the importance of organic foods and their effect on the health of animals,
ultimately humans and environment. The aim is to eradicate the root cause besides providing
healthcare. Ancient Indian methods of medicine as well as latest medical technologies would
be provided.

In rural areas water free from fluorides, bromides etc. is not available and many a rural
population is suffering from various physical disorders/diseases and mineral water plants
would be built and handed over for running by the local bodies/societies formed for
improvement in agriculture. The water would be available at a nominal cost so that the same is
sufficient for daily running/maintenance. Weekly progress would be available on the website of
SIMPLE in the form of pictures/video clippings also, so that the NRV’s could ensure proper
utilization of funds provided by them for the specific purpose.

PEACEFUL LIVING :

The Board of Trustees of SIMPLE believe that Senior Citizens live healthily, happily and longer
if they are kept active with such activities as raising vegetables/fruits/flowers etc. and would
wish to provide opportunity to them at most of the senior citizen’s homes, as such homes are
to be established in rural areas. Start one such home at Nimmakuru, where suitable land is
identified.

TALENT SEARCH :

Promote job-oriented education to the rural poor by establishing Talent Schools, with a view to
bring out the hidden talents of the rural poor. After completion of the course, the students could
either get a job or take up self employment.
Training in Organic farming with all technologies such as Effective Microorganisms, Bio-
Dynamics, Panchagavya, Amrutha Jalam, PROM (Phosphate Rich Organic Manure)
technology, Liquid Bio Fertilizer, Bio Growth Promoters/Pesticides, System of Rice
Intensification (SRI) etc, Young farmers trained in these technologies could get a Government
job as agricultural officers and further promote organic farming at a faster pace, wherever they
are posted. This would help many farmers interested in organic farming.

There are many a rural youth/children with excellent talents in various skills/games/ sports etc.,
but are not getting an opportunity to exhibit their talents. Talent Schools would recognize the
talent of the kids/youth and the main thrust of training would be on the individual talents and
the basic education would be secondary as opposed to the present system of education
wherein sports/skills etc. are secondary.

JANANI JANMA BHOOMI I:

This program is to be sponsored and participated by non resident as well as resident villagers.
They may wish to build a school which could also be used as a shelter during natural
calamities, hospital, day care center or home for the senior citizens, community hall, library,
community toilets etc., SIMPLE would be a facilitator and help in the construction of such
facilities. Quality of construction is the key for the facilities to be utilized for many decades
besides regular maintenance. Approved list of contractors would be used for construction and
those maintaining good quality/standards would be encouraged further contracts.

Weekly progress would be available on the website of SIMPLE in the form of pictures/ video
clippings also, so that the NRV’s could ensure proper utilization of funds provided by them for
the specific purpose.

SHARE/TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGIES :

SIMPLE would share and transfer various technologies and results of experiments and
practical experiences with other voluntary organizations engaged in similar work. Global health
and saving the environment could be achieved only through such co-operation.

SIMPLE Future Plans

LOANS TO SMALL AND MARGINAL ORGANIC FARMERS

The Society would be extending loan facilities to small and marginal farmers doing organic
farming, on a very low interest. Insurance would also be covered within that low interest rate.
These farmers would be given training/guidance and all necessary help in implementing
organic farming methods. The crop would be filmed at regular intervals and at every crucial
stage by the Resource Persons. A file would be maintained on the system at the centre and a
qualified scientist would monitor the crop progress and any measures to be taken by the
farmer would be communicated to him by MMS/SMS through the concerned resource person.
Farmers who have experience in organic farming would be eligible for the loan. Incentives
would be given to farmers making payment in time as the Society does not believe in
penalties. In case of any damage to the crop due to natural calamities and other reasons
beyond the control of the farmer immediate relief would be given to the farmer. The claim form
is to be filled and forwarded to the centre by the concerned resource person along with video
clippings of the damaged crop clearly showing the landmarks of the affected field. Insurance
claims would be settled within 2 days of receipt and the cheque would be delivered to the
farmer at his door steps by the resource person. The society also helps the farmers in getting
quality seeds for the next immediate crop.

TILLING AND PUDDLING OF SMALL AND MARGINAL FARMER’S FIELDS

In the recent one year the tractor owners have hiked the tilling and pudlling charges by almost
50 % and a small farmer has to spend an amount of Rs.1,750/- per acre, which is very high
and would increase the cost of production drastically and due to this the agriculture is not
sustainable. The society would like to acquire tractors along with necessary attachments and
hire them to small farmers at affordable rates.

LASER GUIDED LAND LEVELER FOR LEVELING THE FIELDS

Most of the farm lands are not having proper level as heavy tractors are being used for pudling
purpose and deep cavities are farmed due to this. A lot of water is wasted to submerge the
higher points in the field. Another disadvantage is that plants die in low level areas due to
excess water and plants also die at high level areas due to insufficient water. Besides lot of
unwanted weeds grow in high level areas where there is no water. Due to these reasons crop
production is substantially reduced and it is no longer sustainable. The society would acquire
laser levelers along with tractor and other accessories and provide the leveling service at
reasonable and affordable prices to small farmers.

BETTER PRICE TO THE FARMERS FOR THEIR PRODUCE BY VALUE ADDITION etc.

At present most farmers are not getting proper price for their produce as they sell the produce
in raw form without any value addition. Another factor is that they sell their produce without
waiting for reasonable price. The reason for this is lack of storage facilities and urgency in
repayment of loans borrowed with high rate of interest. If small and marginal farmers are
provided with facilities for value addition for their produce, storage facilities like godowns/cold
storages and loans at reasonable rate of interest they could get the value for their produce.
The society proposes to acquire Mobile Rice Mills which could be used for paddy, pulses etc.

F M RADIO STATION EXCLUSIVELY FOR ORGANIC FARMING

TELIVISION SERIALS DEPICTING / HIGHLIGHTING ORGANIC FARMING

ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN (SATAKA) RICE MILL FOR VALUE ADDITION
MODEL FARM WITH ALL TYPES OF FARMING METHODS / FARMING AIDS / VALUE
ADITIONS etc.

The first step in this direction is construction of tank for Tank Composting along with pumping
motor, fully operational. Live demonstration of raising Black Gram crop using Rain Guns.

A proposal submitted to the District Collector, Krishna District to declare a selected piece of
land, approximately Acs. 150 as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) area and provide funds
from ATMA to strictly implement under the supervision of the Managing Trustee of SIMPLE.
Orders awaited.

ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN FULL FLEDGED TESTING LABORATORY

ESTABLISHMENT OF A KRISHI VIGNANA KENDRA (KVK) FOR AGRICULTURAL
RESEARCH WITH MAIN OBJECTIVE OF ORGNIC FARMING

ESTABLISHMENT OF A CATTLE FARM FOR PRODUCTION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF
COMPOSTS WITH THE ADVANTAGE OF BIO PRODUCTS/SERVICES

SIMPLE Progress so far:

The following progress is made so far and the pace needs to be increased to achieve the aim
of the Society:

The trustees own 24 Acres of land located in Nimmakuru village, Krishna District, Andhra
Pradesh, India. The location is ideal as the land is located next to two major canals and at the
mouth of the water outlet. Water is available throughout the year but for one month. The land
has big bunds around and does not get inundated. It has excellent drainage facility. The land
did not have any problem during the heavy rains that flooded the entire villages and fields
around, during October, 2006. The rain fall during that period was so heavy that it rained 70
cms. in a single day and continued for 4 days with slightly lesser intensity. Many trials have
been carried out in this farm and number of farmers visit regularly to know about the new and
latest technologies being practiced and implemented.

The farm has been kept free of Chemical manures and pesticides since December, 2003. Bio
Dynamic preparations and practices are used/implemented since then. Bio Dynamic Calendar
is also followed to the maximum extent possible. Panchagavya liquid has been sprayed on the
crops. Effective Microorganism technology has been used for decomposing green manure
after puddling and EM 5 used as bio pesticide against fungal, viral and bacterial diseases.
Amrutha Jalam is used for improvement of soil. Tank composting method was practically
demonstrated, which benefits the farmers, as only 1 MT of tank-composted manure is required
as against 5 MT manure normally utilized. In other words the saving is nearly 80 % and benefit
is 400%.

Rain Guns along with 1,800’ of HDP pipe were purchased for carrying out trials on Black Gram
crop, as very little water is required for this crop and the crop would be adversely affected if
flooding of water is carried out. This demo helped many farmers and some of them have
adopted this method of watering and they could substantially increase their yield.

USE OF BIO FERTILIZERS IN SALINE SOILS

Trials were carried on different saline soils by using the following combination of Bio Fertilizers
along with neem powder etc.

              Azospirillum : 4 Kg
              Phosphobacteria : 4 Kg
Potash Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg
Zinc Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg
Iron Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg
Sulphur Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg
              VAM : 2 Kg
              Triciderma Viride : 1 Kg
              Neem Powder : 10 Kg
Vermicompost or FYM : 100 Kg
              Jagri : 1 Kg
              Fermentation : 7 Days

The results were stunning. The paddy yield has more than doubled. Blackgram seeds were
not germinating earlier and after Bio Fertilizer application the yield was more than 4 quintals,
during the last season. This was considered as record production as most of the farmers
removed the crop, since there was yellow mosaic virus. Otherthan the above combination, no
other chemical Fertilizer/pesticide was applied.

The Society’s Managing Trustee is advising M/S KCP Sugar & Industries Corporation,
Lakshmipuram, Krishna District, in an honorary capacity on Organic and Bio Dynamic farming
since two and half years. The industry management has kept 200 acres for raising sugarcane,
paddy and pulses at the disposal of the Managing Trustee. The expenditure to purchase the
organic and bio dynamic products was borne by the industry and not by the farmers. The
results are quite encouraging and the industry is now proposing to extend this facility to 8,000
acres and the material cost would be given as interest free loan to the farmers. Out of the 200
acres 50 acres was taken up for bringing down the soil pH from 8.5-9 to normal (7 pH) using
liquid bio fertilizer and the crop growth is excellent and the soil would be tested to know the
exact pH of the soil after the soil is free of moisture.

FARMERS MEETS & FIELD VISIT TO MANAGING TRUSTEE’S AGRICULTURAL FARM

Managing Trustee Wing Commander Y V Krishna Rao (Retd.) addressed many Farmer’s
Meets during the year 2007 and some important Meets/Field Visits are given below :

Farmers Meet (seminar & Exhibition on Bio Manure) arranged by Commissioner of
Khadi & village Industries at Machilipatnam attended by the Member of Parliament, MLA
of the area, Director of Khadi & village Industries Commission and other dignitaries.
Farmers / Scientists Meet on Innovative & Indigenous technologies organized by the
Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at Vijayawada, attended by the
District Collector, Krishna District, Joint Director Agriculture and various Scientists.

Farmer’s training Program at State Bank Learning Centre (SBLC), Machilipatnam
organized by State Bank of India Institute of Rural Development (SBI-IRD), Hyderabad
at Machilipatnam attended by DGM and AGM’s of SBI. Field Visit of farmers from
Prakasam and Guntur Districts to Managing Trustee’s Farm at Nimmakuru to learn
      about the Innovative technologies adopted.

Krishna District Farmer’s Grand Meet organized jointly by Government of Andhra
Pradesh, Naandi Foundation and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, at Nandigama attended by the
President of APCOB, Member of Parliament of the area, District Collector and AGM
      NABARD.

LIVE DEMONSTRATION OF LASER GUIDED LAND LEVELER AT NIMMAKURU

A live demonstration of Laser Guided Land Leveler was organized on 21 APR 07, by the
Society, SIMPLE along with AICRP on FIM (ICAR-ANGRAU), Hyderabad at Managing
Trustee’s Farm in Nimmakuru and attended by over 150 farmers, mostly progressive farmers
from various districts. The advantages and the operation of the machine were explained to the
farmers. Farmers understood and well appreciated the functioning of the Leveler, as Seeing is
Believing. Arrangements made for telecast of the event by various Channels, as farmers who
missed the event could watch on their TV screens.

The society also arranged practical demonstration at various farmers fields in different
mandals of Krishna district. The demonstrations are being held now also and would continue
till arrival of monsoon.

SEED DRILL FOR SOWING (DIRECT SEEDING) PADDY SEEDS

A seed drill for Direct Seeding of any type of seed is procured by the Society and trials carried
out during the past two years and the results are quite encouraging. The advantage of seed
drill are 1) reduction of seed quantity by more than 70 % 2) no need to raise seed beds 3) no
need to carry out transplantation activities and 4) better yield, thus resulting in saving cost
of labor and making agriculture sustainable.

RESULTS

Using the seed drill gave excellent results. 1) Only 9 Kg of seed was used as against 30 Kg in
the conventional method i.e. raising seed beds and transplantation. 2) Labor cost drastically
reduced, since there is no need to raise seed beds and connected transplantation
activities. Even fertilizer was applied along with the paddy seed. 3) Better yield of around 3
quintals per Acre, more than in the conventional transplantation method and 4) Resulting in
savings towards seed cost, labor cost, increased yield and this definitely makes agriculture
sustainable. The major problem faced is weeds and the same is being attended to and hope to
find a solution for economical removal. It is easy to control the weeds by using chemical
herbicides but use of the same is not in the interest of organic farming.

JANANI JANMA BHOOMI

The first step in this direction is construction of Clean Drinking Water Plant in Nimmakuru
village with the help of Naandi Foundation. The ground breaking ceremony was conducted on
the 30th APRIL, 2007 and the plant is expected to be completed by end of August, 2007.

BETTER PRICE TO THE FARMERS FOR THEIR PRODUCE

The first step in this direction is appointment of two girl students, who are economically
backward and lost both their parents, living in Barkatpura, Hyderabad to market Organic Rice
(Samba Masuri) directly to the consumers during their spare time.

The Society is also negotiating with some Chain Stores to establish Organic Food Counters in
their large number of retail outlets located all over. Once this is finalized the organic farmers
would get better price for their produce.

Recently Food Bazar, a well reputed chain store gave a substantial order, which is quite
encouraging and the order was executed.

Sri Srikanth Chadalawada, who is an organic farmer has taken up the Herculean task of
marketing Organic Rice, Pulses, etc. at Nellore and at Hyderabad through his friend Gautham,
He placed a substantial order on the society for supply of organic rice and blackgram dal and
the same was supplied immediately. The mail id of Srikanth is maharajaaqua@hotmail.com
and he could be contacted on his mobile 9985244491. Gautham could be contacted on his
mobile 9966200784.

Sri Basweswara Rao of “Prakruthi Jeevana Vidhanam, Vijayawada” has given repeated orders
for organic products. He could be contacted on his mobile 9440068235.

SIMPLE & VISION OF SIMPLE

  • 1. Wing Commander Y V Krishna Rao (Retd) BIRTH Born on 21 Sep 1942, in an agricultural family, in Nimmakuru village, Krishna District to Sri Y Sri Rama Murthy garu and Smt Sampurnamma. STUDIES I was a student up to 20 years and Graduated from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada in the year 1962. JAWAN Joined Indian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in 1963 and retired voluntarily as a Wing Commander in 1983. During my 20 years service in the Indian Air Force, I had the rare opportunity to serve the country actively during 1965 and 1971 operations against Pakistan. BUSINESS I was a businessman from 42-61 years. During my business stint I had taken up prestigious works like drilling large number of deep bore wells for world famous and Gunnies World Record Holder, Ramoji Film City, providing drinking water to tribals in remote Orissa Hilly areas, increasing the success rate (from less than 50 % to 95 % by using hydraulic drilling rig) of Agricultural bore wells drilled for Small and Marginal farmers in AP etc. Incidentally the RFC work started with our drilling work. Supplied Gen Sets to Farmers at affordable prices and sold higher capacity Gen Sets to industries like sugar Factories etc. KISAN I became a Kisan for the past 5 years. I moved from Hyderabad to my native village Nimmakuru in Krishna district 5 years ago to practice, experiment, promote and help Organic, Bio Dynamic, Natural and Carbon Farmers. Some of the experiments are given below : SAVING WATER Saving of water by adopting SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method and leveling agricultural fields using Laser Guided Land Leveler, which is accurate to mm level. REDUCING LABOUR COST Reducing the cost of labor by introducing mechanization for leveling and for sowing paddy seeds as well as fertilizers using Tractor drawn Seed Cum Fertilizer Drill.
  • 2. REDUCING COST OF INPUTS Saving cost of cultivation by reducing the inputs like seeds, Fertilizers, Pesticides, Herbicides etc. Least External Input Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) is the key for making agriculture sustainable. Around the 60s almost no external inputs were brought into the village by farmers, whereas today, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, sprayers for spraying pesticides etc. tractors for tilling/puddling etc., petrol, diesel, gunnies etc. are all being brought into the village. Prior to 60s the total inflow of funds into a village used to be more than the out flow. Today it is the other way round and Inorganic agriculture is no longer sustainable. REMUNERATIVE PRICE TO FARMERS At present most farmers are resorting to distress sale, due to urgency of funds, lack of convenient storage facility, etc. Farmers need convenient storage facility, loan against pledge of agri produce, market intelligence, value addition to their produce and marketing facility, so that they could get remunerative price. SIMPLE (NGO) I am the founder Managing Trustee of an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) started in the year 2006, by name SOCIETY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF PUBLIC LIFE AND ENVIRONMENT (SIMPLE).
  • 3. SIMPLE SIMPLE started by me mainly to save the farmers from committing suicides, since agriculture is no longer sustainable due to present agricultural policies, practices etc.. The other important aspects are health of humans, animals, soils and saving environment from heavy pollution. The vision of SIMPLE is given below : Vision of SIMPLE on Agriculture Our Society, SIMPLE is committed to simplify farming operations, to standardize operating procedures and lay down schedules, crop wise as well as for improvement of soil fertility, using least external inputs, saving precious water, by combining ancient indigenous methods and latest innovative technologies, totally eliminating chemical manures, pesticides, herbicides etc., thus making agriculture sustainable as well as to produce plentiful and truly enriched crops resulting in healthy and tasty organic food having longer shelf life with the aim of improving human health and also to save environment from chemical pollution. Our commitment also includes development of marketing tie ups for sale of organic food and ensure better returns to organic farmers, also through value addition and by earning Carbon Credits, so that many more farmers could be encouraged to take up natural, organic, carbon and bio dynamic farming. Our ultimate goal is to educate the interested farmers all over the world and guide them towards our philosophy.
  • 4. ACTIVITIES OF SOCIETY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF PUBLIC LIFE AND ENVIRONMENT - (SIMPLE ) SIMPLE is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), working on ‘no profit and no loss’ basis started with the following aims: 1. Promotion of Organic, Natural, Carbon and Bio-dynamic farming, keeping in mind the health of humans, animals, soils and environment. 2. Good Health for all, with emphasis on providing clean mineral water in rural villages for the economically backward. 3. Welfare of Senior citizens especially in rural villages, by establishing Day Care Centers and Homes for the Aged. 4. Promote job oriented education to the rural poor by establishing Talent Schools, with a view to bring out the hidden talents of the rural poor, including fine arts, sports, games etc. After completion of the course, the students could either get a job or take up self-employment. 5. Undertake any developmental works in rural villages sponsored and funded by Non Resident Villagers (NRVs) 6. Share and transfer various proven technologies with/to the other societies/bodies located all over the world with similar motive. 7. Adopt SIX SIGMA and attain ISO standards. SIMPLE current initiatives: Organic,Natural, Carbon and Bio-Dynamic farming (GOOD EARTH) : Improve soil health by increasing the organic carbon in the soil and ensuring development of healthy Humus. Adopt and propagate various Growth promotional methods and plant extract bio pesticides as per “Vruksha Ayurveda”, practically tested and proven by the farmers. Propagation of preparation and usage of “Panchagavya” an ideal alternative to chemical manures. Promotion of 1) Effective Microorganisms technology, 2) Bio-Dynamic farming methods, 3) Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) Technology, 4) Ancient agricultural practices and 4) Development of Innovative Technologies by farmers in order to bring down the cost of
  • 5. production of various crops and produce healthy and nutritionally rich food. Dissipation of important information to other farmers. Promote System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of cultivation in Paddy and adoption to other suitable crops, as water is saved in this method. To advocate the careful utilization/conservation of water, as the same is going to be a scarce commodity in future. Advocate total elimination of chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides by carrying out experiments with alternatives such as bio growth promoters/pesticides etc, and Bio Dynamic preparations. Wide publicity to be given to farmers by conducting Farmers Meets. Production of Compact Discs on various Organic/Bio Dynamic farming methods and innovative experiments and ensure that they reach the huge farming community through electronic media and using audio visual methods at various Farmer Meets. Provide training to farmers in giving Value addition to their agricultural produce, as they could get a much better price to their produce after value addition. Help farmers to market their produce at a much better price by tying up directly with stores selling organic produce. The middlemen are to be avoided. Encourage educated unemployed to take up direct selling to the consumers and receive orders through emails and making dispatches through courier/transport service. Establish a center at Nimmakuru village, with various facilities such as soil/water testing facility, facilities to train farmers on various agricultural methods and software to recognize the deficiency in the leaves and identify the bacterial, fungal and viral diseases by inspecting the leaves. Select and train Resource Persons (selected amongst farmers) on various aspects of organic farming as well as pest management/control and to identify nutrient deficiency/pest attack etc. Provide mobile phones with video recording facility to the resource persons so that they could record affected crop and MMS to the center seeking advice on the use of bio fertilizers/bio pesticides etc depending on the deficiency/decease. Provide all bio fertilizers/pesticides to the resource persons, so that the same is readily available for use in the fields of the farmers. Resource persons need to arrange a sprayer solely for use of bio fertilizers/pesticides and arrange spraying besides supplying the material. Raise good quality breed cow calves and give it to interested poor and marginal farmers, so that they besides making a living could also prepare quality manure/compost/B D products/ Panchagavya, sufficient for more than 10 Ha with one single cow. Select innovative farmers and support them to carry out fruitful experiments on various aspects of agriculture such as, raising good quality and high yielding variety seeds/ saplings suitable for local conditions, improvement in water/manure/pesticide/other agricultural management
  • 6. techniques/practices and value addition to the produce, which would be given wide publicity after successful final trials using electronic media and audio visual equipments. Provide different working models useful for adoption by farmers on various agricultural activities at the center. Selection of technology/model suitable to the interested farmers depending on their local conditions and transfer of know how as well as on site guidance through trained resource persons. Select farmers proficient in a particular field and in different crops and arrange farmers meet, so that the information is dissipated to other farmers. GOOD HEALTH : In view of over a billion population in India it would be a herculean task for any Government to ensure that their health programs reach interior rural areas and this responsibility is to be shared by many voluntary organizations. Organize regular programs at different locations addressing farmers and other interested groups highlighting the importance of organic foods and their effect on the health of animals, ultimately humans and environment. The aim is to eradicate the root cause besides providing healthcare. Ancient Indian methods of medicine as well as latest medical technologies would be provided. In rural areas water free from fluorides, bromides etc. is not available and many a rural population is suffering from various physical disorders/diseases and mineral water plants would be built and handed over for running by the local bodies/societies formed for improvement in agriculture. The water would be available at a nominal cost so that the same is sufficient for daily running/maintenance. Weekly progress would be available on the website of SIMPLE in the form of pictures/video clippings also, so that the NRV’s could ensure proper utilization of funds provided by them for the specific purpose. PEACEFUL LIVING : The Board of Trustees of SIMPLE believe that Senior Citizens live healthily, happily and longer if they are kept active with such activities as raising vegetables/fruits/flowers etc. and would wish to provide opportunity to them at most of the senior citizen’s homes, as such homes are to be established in rural areas. Start one such home at Nimmakuru, where suitable land is identified. TALENT SEARCH : Promote job-oriented education to the rural poor by establishing Talent Schools, with a view to bring out the hidden talents of the rural poor. After completion of the course, the students could either get a job or take up self employment.
  • 7. Training in Organic farming with all technologies such as Effective Microorganisms, Bio- Dynamics, Panchagavya, Amrutha Jalam, PROM (Phosphate Rich Organic Manure) technology, Liquid Bio Fertilizer, Bio Growth Promoters/Pesticides, System of Rice Intensification (SRI) etc, Young farmers trained in these technologies could get a Government job as agricultural officers and further promote organic farming at a faster pace, wherever they are posted. This would help many farmers interested in organic farming. There are many a rural youth/children with excellent talents in various skills/games/ sports etc., but are not getting an opportunity to exhibit their talents. Talent Schools would recognize the talent of the kids/youth and the main thrust of training would be on the individual talents and the basic education would be secondary as opposed to the present system of education wherein sports/skills etc. are secondary. JANANI JANMA BHOOMI I: This program is to be sponsored and participated by non resident as well as resident villagers. They may wish to build a school which could also be used as a shelter during natural calamities, hospital, day care center or home for the senior citizens, community hall, library, community toilets etc., SIMPLE would be a facilitator and help in the construction of such facilities. Quality of construction is the key for the facilities to be utilized for many decades besides regular maintenance. Approved list of contractors would be used for construction and those maintaining good quality/standards would be encouraged further contracts. Weekly progress would be available on the website of SIMPLE in the form of pictures/ video clippings also, so that the NRV’s could ensure proper utilization of funds provided by them for the specific purpose. SHARE/TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGIES : SIMPLE would share and transfer various technologies and results of experiments and practical experiences with other voluntary organizations engaged in similar work. Global health and saving the environment could be achieved only through such co-operation. SIMPLE Future Plans LOANS TO SMALL AND MARGINAL ORGANIC FARMERS The Society would be extending loan facilities to small and marginal farmers doing organic farming, on a very low interest. Insurance would also be covered within that low interest rate. These farmers would be given training/guidance and all necessary help in implementing organic farming methods. The crop would be filmed at regular intervals and at every crucial stage by the Resource Persons. A file would be maintained on the system at the centre and a qualified scientist would monitor the crop progress and any measures to be taken by the farmer would be communicated to him by MMS/SMS through the concerned resource person.
  • 8. Farmers who have experience in organic farming would be eligible for the loan. Incentives would be given to farmers making payment in time as the Society does not believe in penalties. In case of any damage to the crop due to natural calamities and other reasons beyond the control of the farmer immediate relief would be given to the farmer. The claim form is to be filled and forwarded to the centre by the concerned resource person along with video clippings of the damaged crop clearly showing the landmarks of the affected field. Insurance claims would be settled within 2 days of receipt and the cheque would be delivered to the farmer at his door steps by the resource person. The society also helps the farmers in getting quality seeds for the next immediate crop. TILLING AND PUDDLING OF SMALL AND MARGINAL FARMER’S FIELDS In the recent one year the tractor owners have hiked the tilling and pudlling charges by almost 50 % and a small farmer has to spend an amount of Rs.1,750/- per acre, which is very high and would increase the cost of production drastically and due to this the agriculture is not sustainable. The society would like to acquire tractors along with necessary attachments and hire them to small farmers at affordable rates. LASER GUIDED LAND LEVELER FOR LEVELING THE FIELDS Most of the farm lands are not having proper level as heavy tractors are being used for pudling purpose and deep cavities are farmed due to this. A lot of water is wasted to submerge the higher points in the field. Another disadvantage is that plants die in low level areas due to excess water and plants also die at high level areas due to insufficient water. Besides lot of unwanted weeds grow in high level areas where there is no water. Due to these reasons crop production is substantially reduced and it is no longer sustainable. The society would acquire laser levelers along with tractor and other accessories and provide the leveling service at reasonable and affordable prices to small farmers. BETTER PRICE TO THE FARMERS FOR THEIR PRODUCE BY VALUE ADDITION etc. At present most farmers are not getting proper price for their produce as they sell the produce in raw form without any value addition. Another factor is that they sell their produce without waiting for reasonable price. The reason for this is lack of storage facilities and urgency in repayment of loans borrowed with high rate of interest. If small and marginal farmers are provided with facilities for value addition for their produce, storage facilities like godowns/cold storages and loans at reasonable rate of interest they could get the value for their produce. The society proposes to acquire Mobile Rice Mills which could be used for paddy, pulses etc. F M RADIO STATION EXCLUSIVELY FOR ORGANIC FARMING TELIVISION SERIALS DEPICTING / HIGHLIGHTING ORGANIC FARMING ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN (SATAKA) RICE MILL FOR VALUE ADDITION
  • 9. MODEL FARM WITH ALL TYPES OF FARMING METHODS / FARMING AIDS / VALUE ADITIONS etc. The first step in this direction is construction of tank for Tank Composting along with pumping motor, fully operational. Live demonstration of raising Black Gram crop using Rain Guns. A proposal submitted to the District Collector, Krishna District to declare a selected piece of land, approximately Acs. 150 as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) area and provide funds from ATMA to strictly implement under the supervision of the Managing Trustee of SIMPLE. Orders awaited. ESTABLISHMENT OF MODERN FULL FLEDGED TESTING LABORATORY ESTABLISHMENT OF A KRISHI VIGNANA KENDRA (KVK) FOR AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH WITH MAIN OBJECTIVE OF ORGNIC FARMING ESTABLISHMENT OF A CATTLE FARM FOR PRODUCTION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF COMPOSTS WITH THE ADVANTAGE OF BIO PRODUCTS/SERVICES SIMPLE Progress so far: The following progress is made so far and the pace needs to be increased to achieve the aim of the Society: The trustees own 24 Acres of land located in Nimmakuru village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India. The location is ideal as the land is located next to two major canals and at the mouth of the water outlet. Water is available throughout the year but for one month. The land has big bunds around and does not get inundated. It has excellent drainage facility. The land did not have any problem during the heavy rains that flooded the entire villages and fields around, during October, 2006. The rain fall during that period was so heavy that it rained 70 cms. in a single day and continued for 4 days with slightly lesser intensity. Many trials have been carried out in this farm and number of farmers visit regularly to know about the new and latest technologies being practiced and implemented. The farm has been kept free of Chemical manures and pesticides since December, 2003. Bio Dynamic preparations and practices are used/implemented since then. Bio Dynamic Calendar is also followed to the maximum extent possible. Panchagavya liquid has been sprayed on the crops. Effective Microorganism technology has been used for decomposing green manure after puddling and EM 5 used as bio pesticide against fungal, viral and bacterial diseases. Amrutha Jalam is used for improvement of soil. Tank composting method was practically demonstrated, which benefits the farmers, as only 1 MT of tank-composted manure is required as against 5 MT manure normally utilized. In other words the saving is nearly 80 % and benefit is 400%. Rain Guns along with 1,800’ of HDP pipe were purchased for carrying out trials on Black Gram crop, as very little water is required for this crop and the crop would be adversely affected if
  • 10. flooding of water is carried out. This demo helped many farmers and some of them have adopted this method of watering and they could substantially increase their yield. USE OF BIO FERTILIZERS IN SALINE SOILS Trials were carried on different saline soils by using the following combination of Bio Fertilizers along with neem powder etc. Azospirillum : 4 Kg Phosphobacteria : 4 Kg Potash Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg Zinc Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg Iron Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg Sulphur Mobilising Bacteria : 2 Kg VAM : 2 Kg Triciderma Viride : 1 Kg Neem Powder : 10 Kg Vermicompost or FYM : 100 Kg Jagri : 1 Kg Fermentation : 7 Days The results were stunning. The paddy yield has more than doubled. Blackgram seeds were not germinating earlier and after Bio Fertilizer application the yield was more than 4 quintals, during the last season. This was considered as record production as most of the farmers removed the crop, since there was yellow mosaic virus. Otherthan the above combination, no other chemical Fertilizer/pesticide was applied. The Society’s Managing Trustee is advising M/S KCP Sugar & Industries Corporation, Lakshmipuram, Krishna District, in an honorary capacity on Organic and Bio Dynamic farming since two and half years. The industry management has kept 200 acres for raising sugarcane, paddy and pulses at the disposal of the Managing Trustee. The expenditure to purchase the organic and bio dynamic products was borne by the industry and not by the farmers. The results are quite encouraging and the industry is now proposing to extend this facility to 8,000 acres and the material cost would be given as interest free loan to the farmers. Out of the 200 acres 50 acres was taken up for bringing down the soil pH from 8.5-9 to normal (7 pH) using liquid bio fertilizer and the crop growth is excellent and the soil would be tested to know the exact pH of the soil after the soil is free of moisture. FARMERS MEETS & FIELD VISIT TO MANAGING TRUSTEE’S AGRICULTURAL FARM Managing Trustee Wing Commander Y V Krishna Rao (Retd.) addressed many Farmer’s Meets during the year 2007 and some important Meets/Field Visits are given below : Farmers Meet (seminar & Exhibition on Bio Manure) arranged by Commissioner of Khadi & village Industries at Machilipatnam attended by the Member of Parliament, MLA of the area, Director of Khadi & village Industries Commission and other dignitaries.

LIVE DEMONSTRATION OF LASER GUIDED LAND LEVELER AT NIMMAKURU A live demonstration of Laser Guided Land Leveler was organized on 21 APR 07, by the Society, SIMPLE along with AICRP on FIM (ICAR-ANGRAU), Hyderabad at Managing Trustee’s Farm in Nimmakuru and attended by over 150 farmers, mostly progressive farmers from various districts. The advantages and the operation of the machine were explained to the farmers. Farmers understood and well appreciated the functioning of the Leveler, as Seeing is Believing. Arrangements made for telecast of the event by various Channels, as farmers who missed the event could watch on their TV screens. The society also arranged practical demonstration at various farmers fields in different mandals of Krishna district. The demonstrations are being held now also and would continue till arrival of monsoon. SEED DRILL FOR SOWING (DIRECT SEEDING) PADDY SEEDS A seed drill for Direct Seeding of any type of seed is procured by the Society and trials carried out during the past two years and the results are quite encouraging. The advantage of seed drill are 1) reduction of seed quantity by more than 70 % 2) no need to raise seed beds 3) no need to carry out transplantation activities and 4) better yield, thus resulting in saving cost of labor and making agriculture sustainable. RESULTS Using the seed drill gave excellent results. 1) Only 9 Kg of seed was used as against 30 Kg in the conventional method i.e. raising seed beds and transplantation. 2) Labor cost drastically reduced, since there is no need to raise seed beds and connected transplantation activities. Even fertilizer was applied along with the paddy seed. 3) Better yield of around 3 quintals per Acre, more than in the conventional transplantation method and 4) Resulting in
  • 12. savings towards seed cost, labor cost, increased yield and this definitely makes agriculture sustainable. The major problem faced is weeds and the same is being attended to and hope to find a solution for economical removal. It is easy to control the weeds by using chemical herbicides but use of the same is not in the interest of organic farming. JANANI JANMA BHOOMI The first step in this direction is construction of Clean Drinking Water Plant in Nimmakuru village with the help of Naandi Foundation. The ground breaking ceremony was conducted on the 30th APRIL, 2007 and the plant is expected to be completed by end of August, 2007. BETTER PRICE TO THE FARMERS FOR THEIR PRODUCE The first step in this direction is appointment of two girl students, who are economically backward and lost both their parents, living in Barkatpura, Hyderabad to market Organic Rice (Samba Masuri) directly to the consumers during their spare time. The Society is also negotiating with some Chain Stores to establish Organic Food Counters in their large number of retail outlets located all over. Once this is finalized the organic farmers would get better price for their produce. Recently Food Bazar, a well reputed chain store gave a substantial order, which is quite encouraging and the order was executed. Sri Srikanth Chadalawada, who is an organic farmer has taken up the Herculean task of marketing Organic Rice, Pulses, etc. at Nellore and at Hyderabad through his friend Gautham, He placed a substantial order on the society for supply of organic rice and blackgram dal and the same was supplied immediately. The mail id of Srikanth is maharajaaqua@hotmail.com and he could be contacted on his mobile 9985244491. Gautham could be contacted on his mobile 9966200784. Sri Basweswara Rao of “Prakruthi Jeevana Vidhanam, Vijayawada” has given repeated orders for organic products. He could be contacted on his mobile 9440068235.
