Why is Canberra the capital of Australia? Back in 1901… the cities of Melbourne and  Sydney could not agree on which of them should  be the capital. The compromise was a site  half way between the two, hence Canberra!

Blue Lake, Mount Gambier This is the principal attraction of Mount  Gambier that occupies one of the craters  of the extinct volcano after which the city has been named. The Lake mysteriously changes colour to deep blue from November to March. Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake was once reputed to be bottomless, but it is in fact 70 metres deep . The Coorong The Coorong stretches from the mouth of  River Murray to just north of Kingston,  featuring 145 kms of enormous diversity  and stunning scenery. The Pool of Siloam, Beach port The Pool of Siloam is unique to Beachport  with a salt concentration seven times greater  than the sea. WA Maritime Museum Explore the vast riches of Western  Australia's maritime history at three  unique Fremantle sites: The Maritime Museum is the jewel in the crown of  one of Australia's most significant maritime precincts, stretching from the convict-built Shipwreck Galleries, beside Fishing Boat Harbour.   Caver sham Wildlife Park (Swan Valley)   Meet Australia's native animals such as  koalas, kangaroos, wombats and Tasmanian  devils.
AQWA  (formerly Underwater World)  (Sunset Coast) Feel the sea creatures in the giant Touch Pool      'Dive with Sharks' and 'Dive with Seals'. Rottnest Island  J ust 16km off Perth's coastline, 20 mins away by ferry.  Ferries leave from  Fremantle, Perth and Hillarys. Gold Fields: The Goldfields is steeped in history and  legend. Here you can see relics of the  gold rush that made the area famous,  plus mines that are the largest gold producers in Australia.  Ghost towns, majestic old buildings and historic streetscapes create a virtual museum of a golden era   Wave Rock   Wave Rock is about 4 hours and 20 mins from Perth (by car).   Formed from solid  granite rock, and is 50m high and 110m long.
Esperance Characterized by spectacular coastal scenery;  an abundance of wildlife including seals,  dolphins, whales, emus and sea eagles;  Pristine beaches; hundred of islands and  extensive national parks.  It is one of the only places in Western Australia where you will see kangaroos sunbathing on the beach. A paradise for lovers of the water and sun. Bush adventure in beautiful national parks A little further south is the Pilbara – famous for its rich  red earth and the rocky landscape of Karijini National Park. KIMBERLEY Covering more than 420,000 square kilometers (261,000 miles), an area three times the size of England, it is home to only  25,000 people. With wide horizons, ancient gorges,  picture-book rock pools and pristine beaches, it is a  special place that will linger in your mind long after you have left. Take a trip into Purnululu National Park where you will marvel at the thousands of huge beehive-shaped mounds of the Bungle Bungle.
Cable Beach   On the coast is the township of Broome, a tranquil  tropical spot, world famous for its pearling industry.  Relax and unwind on the soft clean sands of Cable Beach, swim in clear turquoise waters. The beach extends 24 kilometers (15 miles) so you can choose a different spot every day and never get tired of the view .   Pilbara   One of the Earth's oldest land masses - estimated to be more than 2.5 billion years old.  With its sheer gorges and  steep chasms you can see where nature has carved deep  lines-of-time into the landscape.  There is no better place to witness this than at Karijini  National Park. This is Australia's largest national park  covering 100,000 square kilometres (38,610 square miles) and has spectacular 100-metre (327-foot) sheer-sided chasms. Hidden amongst this ruggedness are crystal clear rock pools and cascading waterfalls.
Aborigines  Has much older inhabitants than those living in towns...  the Australian Aborigines.  An overwhelming  number of rock engravings can be found in the area  making it one of the most prolific regions in the world  for this type of discovery.  Dating back 40,000 years,  they tell of the 'Dreamtime' and how life was for these first inhabitants. More than 10,000 of these engravings are on the Burrup Peninsula, located near Dampier. Northam The largest town in the Avon Valley. Many buildings give the appearance and character of the last century.  The Shamrock Hotel (1866), Flour Mill (1871), still  operates and supplies flour to Mauritius and some  Arab states.  Byfield House (1898), Avon Valley Arts Society – located
in what was once the Old Girls School (1877) and the Old Post Office.  The dinosaurs would have been the first tourists to wonder at Wave Rock.  Geologists and geographies date this marvel as being 2,700 million years old. Mandurah and the Peel Region   Just 50 minutes away from Perth, Mandurah is known as the 'Jewel of the Peel'. Mandurah, the focual point of the Peel Region, is a coastal city characterized by the popular Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary. Bordered by the Indian Ocean to the west, it is a city dominated by waterways and known for its good fishing, prawning and crabbing. Mandurah is well known for its blue manna crabs.

The Northern Territory has two major gateways, Darwin and Alice Springs. Darwin, the Territory’s Capital city, is a great base for exploring the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park Population  Northern Territory's population is approximately 200 000. This is only 1% of the entire Australian population.  More than 50 nationalities make up Darwin’s 100,000-plus population, including the area’s traditional owners, the Larrakia Aboriginal people. Clothing For Darwin, Kakadu and Katherine, lightweight summer clothing is worn all year-round. For Central Australia, temperate ranges from 40 ˚C in the summer to -4 ˚C in the winter. Travelling in the bush is more comfortable in jeans or similar practical clothing and strong rubber-soled shoes . Crocodiles (Jumping Crocodile Cruise) Saltwater (“salties”) and Freshwater (“freshies”)  crocodiles are common residents of coastal waters,  rivers swamps and billabongs. The largest concentration of salt water crocodiles in the world. George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens In the heart of the city, the Botanic Gardens has many species of plants, more than 400 different palm species along grown in this stunning showcase of the flora of northern Australia and other tropical habitats around the world.
Mamukala Wetlands   -  During May to October, Mamukala Wetlands and Bird Hide displays the spectacle of thousands of migratory magpie geese congregating to feed.   Museum & Art Gallery of Northern Territory  -  This acclaimed attraction has an extensive collection of Australian arts, human, physical and natural sciences, Northern Territory history and maritime technology, and an impressive representation of Aboriginal art and craft. Featured exhibitions are the Cyclone Tracy and Sweetheart the crocodile exhibits.   Northern Territory Parliament House  -  Australia’s newest Parliament House opened in 1994, this beautiful building is a magnificent example of tropical architecture . Territory Wildlife Park   -  Forty-five minutes south of Darwin, a world-class nature attraction that showcases Territory wildlife in natural habitats. Set in 400 hectares of bushland, 6 kilometres of walking trails and a free shuttle train link to the 26 major exhibits.
Kakadu & Arnhem Land  -  is Australia’s largest national park, covering 19, 000 square kilometers. A number of different Aboriginal clans. World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, situated 250 kilometres from Darwin, represents nature on a grand scale. The Park contains vast floodplains, river systems, billabongs, escarpments and majestic waterfalls. Renowned internationally for its natural and cultural wonders, Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of accessible Aboriginal rock art sites in the world. Which is home to millions of birds and plentiful barramundi. Mary River National Park -  The calm waters of the Mary River are best enjoyed on a fishing trip or nature cruise. Jim Jim & Twin Falls These are perhaps Australia’s two most famous and impressive waterfalls. After the rains of the Tropical Summer season, the waterfalls which flow through soaring sandstone escarpments are at their most impressive and can be viewed by helicopter or plane flight
Nourlangie Rock  - Easy to access, a 1.5km  Circular walk takes the visitor past an ancient  Aboriginal shelter and several outstanding art  sites. There is a lookout, which provides  impressive views of Kakadu’s escarpment and  Nourlangie Rock.   Yellow Waters Billabong  -  A river system given  its name by the colour the water looks as the sun  hits it at sunset and sunrise. Taking a cruise along  this river is an experience of a lifetime .  Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre This centre displays the creation era as interpreted by the Aboriginal people. An excellent interpretive and interactive display of the history of Kakadu .
Katherine is a vast network of rivers, escarpments and gorges that weave through the sprawling plains of cattle stations, national parks and reserves.  Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park  These limestone caves reveal beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites as well as sparkling calcite crystals in the walls. They are also home to the rare ghost and orange horseshoe bats and the nearly extinct blind shrimp.  Nitmiluk National Park  - The beautiful 2,920 square-kilometres  Nitmiluk National Park is made up of 13 sandstone sections. The name ‘Nitmiluk’ is the traditional Jawoyn landowners’ word for Cicada Dreaming, which is one of the area’s important Dreamtime stories. Numerous art sites remain some over 7,000 years old. Pine Creek  - This is an historic gold mining township, approximately halfway between Kakadu and Katherine. Gold was first discovered here in 1871. The town still possesses the original buildings and is home to the oldest continuously running general store in Australia.
Devils Marbles -   Fascinating natural wonder about 106km south of Tennant Creek. The Marbles are thousands of huge, rounded granite boulders balanced delicately atop one another in a wide shallow valley. The vistas are especially remarkable at sunrise and sunset.  Alice Springs Cultural Precinct  -  The precinct presents a wonderful array of culture and natural history of Central Australia. The site is culturally significant to Aboriginal people in the area with seven sacred sites and trees of significance.  Alice Springs Desert Park  - Experience the  landscapes, animals & plants and discover how  they were used by the traditional Aboriginal  people at the park. See free flying birds of prey,  rare and endangered animals in the world’s most  spectacular Desert Nocturnal House, and a  cinematic journey into four and a half billion years of desert evolution.
Frontier Camel Farm  - T his is a great way of learning  about the camels of Australia which were introduced from  the Middle East by the early pioneers. Camels were far  tougher than horses and made establishing the township far  easier. Interestingly, there are now approximately 200,000  camels in Central Australia, that’s more camels than the  entire population of the Northern Territory . Ulu r u & Kata Tjuta   - Rising abruptly out of  the red sand and Spinifex, Ulu r u (Ayers Rock)  and Kata Tju t a (The Olgas) dominate their  surrounding landscape. Ulu r u stands 348 metres high and, like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface. Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon)   –  A mighty chasm that cleaves the earth to a depth  of 270 metres. The sheer red rock face of the  canyon soars over 100 metres above lush palm  forest, sheltering them from the surrounding desert’s harshness.

Riverlife Adventure Centre   - This centre offers a variety of adventure leisure activities in Brisbane including kayaking, cycling, rock climbing and abseiling. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary   - is set in tranquil  bushland on the banks of the Brisbane River and is  Australia’s largest koala sanctuary.   Bundaberg   This is the heart of Queensland's sugar country and is one of the southernmost access points to the Great Barrier Reef. Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park These limestone caves reveal beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites as well as sparkling calcite crystals in the walls. They are also home to the rare ghost and orange horseshoe bats and the nearly extinct blind shrimp. Nitmiluk National Park - The beautiful 2,920 square-kilometres Nitmiluk National Park is made up of 13 sandstone sections. The name ‘Nitmiluk’ is the traditional Jawoyn landowners’ word for Cicada Dreaming, which is one of the area’s important Dreamtime stories. Numerous art sites remain some over 7,000 years old. Pine Creek - This is an historic gold mining township, approximately halfway between Kakadu and Katherine. Gold was first discovered here in 1871. The town still possesses the original buildings and is home to the oldest continuously running general store in Australia.
