YOU'VE NEVER HAD A NEW YEAR'S EVE LIKE THIS - GET READY FOR A MEMORABLE CELEBRATION
(This post contains paid and/or affiliate links)
Your New Year's Eve is going to go down one of two ways: you'll either pay so little attention to it that you won't
even know when midnight hits, or you'll have an awesome plan ready to go that will make this your most memorable
New Year's ever. Find 8 New Year's plans for 8 different stages of life and interests in the following slides.
C O U P L E S
I'm referring to those who are dating or who are married without kids (or those who can find a babysitter). Work together to think of a list of different places
you've been or different things you've done in your relationship that mean the most to you. Now write those down. For example:
1. Spot we shared our first kiss.
2. First movie we saw together.
3. First restaurant we ate at together.
4. First time we met.
5. Favorite coffee shop.
6. Putting puzzles together.
7. Walks through the park.
8. Most awkward moment.
I would recommend ending where you shared your first kiss. It is New Year's after all.
Then plot those out on a map in the order and direction that makes the most sense. On New Year's, visit each one of those places. When you get there, either do
the thing you did the first time you were there, or do something romantic or that helps you look back at the past. For example:
1. Ask a question: what's the first thing you noticed about me that you liked?
2. Share a pair of headphones and slow dance (or whatever kind of dance you're into).
3. Plan 3 things you want to do in the future together.
4. Share a top 10 list of things you appreciate about each other.
5. Play charades.
6. Just sit and watch people and pick older people out that you'd be okay looking like when you're older.
7. Just hold hands in silence.
8. Share your favorite moments from the past year.
You make a whole day out of it like this and it's sure to the best New Year's you've ever spent together. Maybe even the best date.
FA M I L I E S
Have an award show! Everyone, on their own (parents feel free to help your kids out with ideas, though),
does their best to think back through the year while thinking of each person in their family. Try to think
through each person in your family's accomplishments, blunders, embarrassing moments, personal traits,
habits, humorous moments, stage of life, something they're known for saying, etc. You then come up with
awards for each person that are kind of like yearbook superlatives. For example:
1. If your brother keeps a messy room, you'd award him with: The Messiest Existence Award.
2. If your sister won a piano contest this year, you'd award her with: The Magic Fingers Award.
3. If your baby brother is in diapers still, you'd award him with: The Mostly Likely To Be Okay With Us
Living Right Next To A Sewage Treatment Center Award.
Again, if you want this to last for a little while, every family member should come up with awards for
every other family member.
To take it up a notch, have everyone make their own award certificates or ribbons. It could be as tacky as
using crayons or as nice as designing them on the computer. Take it another notch higher by going to a
dollar store or a dollar section in stores that have them and finding items that represent the awards you're
giving out and use those.
Only you know the kind of awards the people in your family could handle, so make some rules accordingly.
G A M E R S
Try to think through every single PC or console
multiplayer game that you played with your
friends this year. Find a way to get all of those
games and all of those friends together on New
Year's. Make a schedule, starting with when you
can all get together, and ending with when you
have to stop. Split the time you have up so that
you have an equal amount of time for each game.
And don't worry about time. You're gamers. We
both know you'll be playing all night.
C A R D & B O A R D G A M E S
Make a list of board games that you spent time playing this past year. Each game must be able to support
everyone who will be playing. In other words, if there's 4 people, every game needs to support at least 4
players.
When it comes time for your New Year's party, set up each game on the floor, in a row, through your house.
You will all begin playing the first game. Once somebody wins the game, the winner advances to the next
game.
If the previous is a game that the losers can keep playing once the winner has moved on, they must keep playing
until they win as well. For instance, if you're playing the game Sorry, even if someone wins, the rest can keep
playing until they've gotten all their pieces 'home'. The winner (who has moved on to the next game)
continues to only play when it's their turn in the original order. The losers can join him when they finish the
game.
If the previous game is a game that cannot be played anymore once the winner has won, the person in 2nd place
must let the winner play 2 turns of the new game before they can play. The person who got 3rd place in the
previous game must wait to play the new game until the winner has played 3 turns, and so on and so forth.
This obviously takes a long time, but it's a way to celebrate all your gaming during the year and you're
supposed to stay up late, right? You can always have a cut off time where whoever is the furthest wins at
midnight or 2 in the morning.
C O L L E G E S T U D E N T S
Get a group together and have everyone choose a random place in town. Each one of these places will be visited during the night. Be creative, though, not
just the same old places college students are known to go while partying. For example:
1. A playground.
2. A fast food restaurant.
3. A skate park.
4. A lake or pond.
5. A department store.
6. A monument, landmark or outdoor art piece.
7. A friend's house.
8. An ice rink.
Everyone should bring their own bottle of something festive or celebratory like sparkling grape juice. I realize this isn't usually what college students drink,
but there will be a lot of driving and moving around and I don't recommended that type of drink.
At each place you stop, you have to come up with some objective that everyone has to do. After everyone does that objective, one person has to share a
good memory from the past year. For each memory shared, you will all take one drink together. The rule is, though, you can't take a drink unless everyone
has done the objective. I'm not suggesting anything illegal or unsafe, just stuff you wouldn't normally do. For example (and in reference to the locations
above):
1. Slide down one of the slides.
2. Everyone sing their food order.
3. Do a trick that doesn't require a skate board, but looks like that type of trick.
4. Skip a stone across the water.
5. Sing Auld Lang Syne in front of the store as a group.
6. Pose creatively around the object for a picture.
7. See if you can get them to open their window and do the famous Romeo & Juliet scene.
8. See who can slide the farthest on their stomach.
Keep going until the bottles are dry or you've run out of locations.
H I G H S C H O O L S T U D E N T S
Have a progressive New Year's party! This is playing off the idea of a progressive dinner, but if you've
never done one of those, let me explain. Instead of going to people's houses to eat a different part of a
meal like you do in a progressive dinner, you'll be going to your friends different houses to do a different
activity at each one.
Let's say you have 8 friends total that will be going to your party. Around 5 o' clock you'll be starting at
one friends house and spending a certain amount of time there doing a certain activity. When the time is
up, you all head over to the next friends house and do a different activity. Here are some activity ideas:
1. A New Year's themed dinner.
2. A party board game (see a list of good ones here).
3. A movie.
4. A dessert or snack.
5. A video game.
6. Watching the New Year's ball drop.
7. A backyard night game.
8. Looking at yearbooks.
Split this all up into whatever time segments you want; a lot will be determined by how many are
involved. You're also going to need some super cool parents to help put all this on.
F O O D I E S
Talk to your friends and family to find out how many can come.
Have each person go back through everything they made this
year and think of 1 or 2 of their favorite snacks or dishes. Instead
of everybody just getting together with their finished dishes, get
together earlier than that. Have everyone bring the ingredients
they need and make all the dishes in the same kitchen, together!
Sound a little chaotic? It probably will be, but it's your friends and
family. You're gonna have a blast with all the playful banter and
such while you're working.
Afterwards, have everyone vote for their favorite dish (of course
they can't vote for their own). Be sure to exchange recipes.
M O V I E B U F F S
Have everyone coming to your party go through all of their favorite
movies that were released in the past year. Depending on how many
people you have, have each person choose 3-5 of their favorite scenes
from those movies. Each person will then take turns showing those
clips at the party. After each clip, they have to share why it's one of
their favorite clips and how they think it made the movie better.
You could also have a voting thing gong on. Take different categories
like action, drama, comedy, etc., and have everyone vote for their
favorite scene in each category. Again, you cannot vote for yourself.
If you want to get even more into it, whoever brings the clip could also
prepare a trivia question about the clip to ask once it's done playing.
Now go make your New Year's awesome. Share what your awesome New Years' plans are on Facebook and Twitter.

A party board game (see a list of good ones here). 3. A movie. 4. A dessert or snack. 5. A video game. 6. Watching the New Year's ball drop. 7. A backyard night game. 8. Looking at yearbooks. Split this all up into whatever time segments you want; a lot will be determined by how many are involved. You're also going to need some super cool parents to help put all this on.
  • 9. F O O D I E S Talk to your friends and family to find out how many can come. Have each person go back through everything they made this year and think of 1 or 2 of their favorite snacks or dishes. Instead of everybody just getting together with their finished dishes, get together earlier than that. Have everyone bring the ingredients they need and make all the dishes in the same kitchen, together! Sound a little chaotic? It probably will be, but it's your friends and family. You're gonna have a blast with all the playful banter and such while you're working. Afterwards, have everyone vote for their favorite dish (of course they can't vote for their own). Be sure to exchange recipes.
  • 10. M O V I E B U F F S Have everyone coming to your party go through all of their favorite movies that were released in the past year. Depending on how many people you have, have each person choose 3-5 of their favorite scenes from those movies. Each person will then take turns showing those clips at the party. After each clip, they have to share why it's one of their favorite clips and how they think it made the movie better. You could also have a voting thing gong on. Take different categories like action, drama, comedy, etc., and have everyone vote for their favorite scene in each category. Again, you cannot vote for yourself. If you want to get even more into it, whoever brings the clip could also prepare a trivia question about the clip to ask once it's done playing.
