Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is. Simon Peter answers that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells his disciples that he must suffer and die but will rise again. When Peter objects, Jesus rebukes him and says Peter does not have in mind the things of God but of man. Jesus tells his disciples that if they want to follow him, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and lose their life for his sake.

3. When Jesus came to the
region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples,
They replied, “Some say John the
Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others,
Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
he asked.
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah,
the Son of the living God.”

4. Jesus replied,
Then he ordered his disciples not to
tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

5. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his
disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer
many things at the hands of the elders, the chief
priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must
be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
“Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to
you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter,

6. Then Jesus said to his disciples,

12. But you are a chosen people, a
royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of
him who called you out of darkness into his
wonderful light.

20. “You are
the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

From that time on Jesus began to explain to

26. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke
him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never
happen to you!”

29. Then Jesus said to his disciples,

33. For this reason, since the
day we heard about you, we have not stopped
praying for you. We continually ask God to fill
you with the knowledge of his will through all
the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit
gives, so that you may live a life worthy of
the Lord and please him in every way: bearing
fruit in every good work, growing in the
knowledge of God,

34. being strengthened with all power according
to his glorious might so that you may have great
endurance and patience, and giving joyful
thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to
share in the inheritance of his holy people in the
kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from
the dominion of darkness and brought us into
the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we
have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

35. Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

36. Peter replied, “Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you
will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The
promise is for you and your children and for all
who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God
will call.”

37. With many other words he warned them; and
he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from
this corrupt generation.” Those who
accepted his message were baptized, and about
three thousand were added to their number that
day. They devoted themselves to the
apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer.

38. having been buried with
him in baptism, in which you were also raised
with him through your faith in the working of
God, who raised him from the dead. When
you were dead in your sins and in the
uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you
alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,

39. Or don’t you know that all of us
who were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? We were therefore
buried with him through baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too
may live a new life.

40. For if we have been united with him in a death
like his, we will certainly also be united with him
in a resurrection like his. For we know that our
old self was crucified with him so that the body
ruled by sin might be done away with, that we
should no longer be slaves to sin— because
anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
