COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to Cobalt-Iron-Chromium Alloys We, WILLIAM
JESSOP AND SONS, LIMITED, of Brightside Works, Sheffield, in the
County of York, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention,
for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method
by which it U to be performed, to, be particularly described in and by
the following statement:-
This invention relates to, heat-resisting alloys of the kind having a
cobalt-ironchromium base and its object is to provide alloys of this
kind from which wrought materials will have improved heat-resisting
properties.
The invention is based upon the observation that heat-resisting alloys
of the kind referred to are improved by the addition of larger
quantities than hitherto of strengthening additions of carbon and
carbide-forming elements or other strengtheners.
According to this invention alloys comprise the following, the
percentages being by weight.
Carbon 0.2-0.6% Manganese 0.5-1.5% Silicon 0.3-0.6 % Cobalt 45-70%
Chromium 15-22 % Tungsten 2-6 % Molybdenum 2-6 % Niobium and/or
Tantalum 1-6% Boron 0-0.05 % ' Nitrogen 0--.1% Balance, if any, iron
except for the usual impurities.
In addition there may be present in the above-mentioned range up to
1%' of Cerium and up to 1% total of one or more special deoxidising
additions of Aluminium, Beryllium, Titanium, Vanadium, Calcium and
Magnesium.

Alloys according to the invention may advantageously be solution
treated at a high temperature in the region 1150-13005 C., after which
treatment some of them may be further improved by warm working at
5009000 C. Warm working is a controlled process whereby a specific
amount of forging reduction Carbon Manganese Silicon Cobalt Chromium
Tungsten Molybdenum Niobium and/or Tantalum Boron Nitrogen (generally
3-15% in thickness) is given at a controlled temperature in the range
500900 C.
