The Evolution of
Radio Wave
Application
BY: MALCOLM ARANDA
FOR UNSY 205
DR. ANDRON CREARY
James Maxwell
• In 1865, Maxwell discovered and theorized about the
relationship between electric and magnetic waves.
• He was able to create four equations to help describe this
electromagnetic relationship.
Heinrich Hertz
• Actually proved of the existence of electromagnetic waves.
• Created a device that was able to send and receive
electromagnetic waves wirelessly. This device is called a spark
gap transmitter.
• Hertz was oblivious to the importance of his discovery and
didn't’t live to see how his experiment progressed.
Guglielmo Marconi
• Developed, demonstrated, and marketed the first successful
long-distance wireless telegraph in 1901.
• He successfully transmitted a radio signal across the Atlantic,
this was the biggest contribution to date.
• His transmission ensured ships at sea had a way to
communicate to land.
• His telegraph helped save lives during the Titanic ship wreck.
1920’s
• The start of the 1920’s began the ”Golden Age of Radio”.
Civilian and commercial use of radio begins with the help of
Superheterodyne (superhet) radios. Marconi’s company
broadcasts programming and the British Broadcast Company is
formed.
• Radio becomes the most popular medium for news, sports,
and entertainment.
Robert Watson-Watt
• Main contributor to the development of Radio detection and
ranging technology.
• RADAR helped allied forces detect axis aircraft during WW2.
Sputnik
• In 1957, the Soviet Union launched their famous Sputnik
satellite into orbit.
• The Sputnik was only capable of transmitting out a bleep, but it
proved the functionality and importance of satellite
communication.
• Many more satellites followed Sputnik, none were as important
as the launch of the Telstar in 1962.
• Telstar was used to transmit the first live transatlantic television
transmissions.
Current Technology
• Much of our international communications are routed through
satellites.
• Satellites also provide navigation, geological surveys through
pictures, and weather information.
• Cellphone networks rely on electromagnetic signals.
