7. There are many optical phenomena in the sky. To name 3: rainbows, sundogs and mirages. Explain fully how each one if formed, including how they are the same or different. Why do we only see a rainbow on the earth but in a plane, you can see a whole circle is one of the thing that should be explained. Solution Rainbow- A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Sundogs- Sundogs, parhelia, are formed by plate crystals high in the cirrus clouds that occur world-wide. In cold climates the plates can also be in ground level as diamond dust. Mirages- Its formation is a result of the refraction and the total internal reflection of light in the air. To investigate the formation of a mirage, we firstly need to understand why light is refracted in the air. Regions of air at different temperatures have different refractive indexes, just like many different mediums. .

When you were young, did you ever look at the sky and wonder why it’s blue and not your favorite color like pink? And if you were able to fly that you would just sit on a cloud and wondered what it would feel like? It turns out, it wasn’t just randomly chosen but is blue for a reason. When the sun shines, there is light reflected in different direction, which come in contact with dust and other particles kind of like scattered sunlight. As a gas molecule is hit, most of the blue light bounces off in all directions while red orange, and yellow light might just pass through.
A lot of the sky is composed of violet but our eyes are not that sensitive to that color, so it appears blue. If the sky were examined with a spectrometer, you would notice the broadband of colors. There is blue light everywhere overhead and when that light then reaches your eyes; you see it everywhere above, making the sky appear blue. The sky might reveal two different colors of blue. The blue color gets lighter towards the horizon than the blue that you see when looking straight up to the sky. This is because we have many different particles in our atmosphere and when these particles are the same or even larger than the wavelength of the light that is already being reflected, a different scattering happens. These particles can be washed out by rain so the sky might be a darker blue following a rainstorm.
If there weren’t an atmosphere, the sky would appear black. Even at night the sky has a slight color. This can be from light sources in areas that get in the way of being able to see some of the starts and even planets. When someone is on the moon looking at earth, the sky is black because there is no atmosphere. The planet Earth experiences four seasons, those of spring, summer, fall and winter. The start of winter and summer are noted by the occurrence of the winter and summer solstices, respectively, while the start of spring and fall are marked by the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. The Northern and Southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons, but for the Northern Hemisphere, the processions of seasons is as follows: winter begins when the sun is directly over the tropic of Capricorn, and the sun is at its lowest in the northern sky. This also results in the longest night of the year From here, the Earth begins to tilt so that the sun moves closer to the center of the northern sky. The vernal equinox is when the sun is directly over the equator, and the length of day and night are about equivalent. The sun moves farther towards the center of the northern sky, until the summer equinox, where the sun is over the tropic of Cancer, or otherwise farthest to the center of the sky. This day has the longest amount of sunlight. From here, the sun moves back down towards the tropic of Capricorn, and the autumnal equinox occurs when the sun is back over the equator.

Scattering is a process where radiation such as light is forced to deviate from its straight path by non-uniformities in the medium it passes through. Light scattering in the atmosphere causes the sky to appear blue, as the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more than longer red or yellow wavelengths. The strength of scattering depends on the particle size and light wavelength, following Rayleigh's law of scattering where scattering is proportional to the inverse fourth power of the wavelength. When you were young, did you ever look at the sky and wonder why it’s blue and not your favorite color like pink? And if you were able to fly that you would just sit on a cloud and wondered what it would feel like? It turns out, it wasn’t just randomly chosen but is blue for a reason. When the sun shines, there is light reflected in different direction, which come in contact with dust and other particles kind of like scattered sunlight. As a gas molecule is hit, most of the blue light bounces off in all directions while red orange, and yellow light might just pass through.
A lot of the sky is composed of violet but our eyes are not that sensitive to that color, so it appears blue. If the sky were examined with a spectrometer, you would notice the broadband of colors. There is blue light everywhere overhead and when that light then reaches your eyes; you see it everywhere above, making the sky appear blue. The sky might reveal two different colors of blue. The blue color gets lighter towards the horizon than the blue that you see when looking straight up to the sky. This is because we have many different particles in our atmosphere and when these particles are the same or even larger than the wavelength of the light that is already being reflected, a different scattering happens. These particles can be washed out by rain so the sky might be a darker blue following a rainstorm.
If there weren’t an atmosphere, the sky would appear black. Even at night the sky has a slight color. This can be from light sources in areas that get in the way of being able to see some of the starts and even planets. When someone is on the moon looking at earth, the sky is black because there is no atmosphere. The planet Earth experiences four seasons, those of spring, summer, fall and winter. The start of winter and summer are noted by the occurrence of the winter and summer solstices, respectively, while the start of spring and fall are marked by the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. The Northern and Southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons, but for the Northern Hemisphere, the processions of seasons is as follows: winter begins when the sun is directly over the tropic of Capricorn, and the sun is at its lowest in the northern sky. This also results in the longest night of the year From here, the Earth begins to tilt so that the sun moves closer to the center of the northern sky. The vernal equinox is when the sun is directly over the equator, and the length of day and night are about equivalent. The sun moves farther towards the center of the northern sky, until the summer equinox, where the sun is over the tropic of Cancer, or otherwise farthest to the center of the sky. This day has the longest amount of sunlight. From here, the sun moves back down towards the tropic of Capricorn, and the autumnal equinox occurs when the sun is back over the equator.

Scattering is a process where radiation such as light is forced to deviate from its straight path by non-uniformities in the medium it passes through. Light scattering in the atmosphere causes the sky to appear blue, as the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more than longer red or yellow wavelengths. The strength of scattering depends on the particle size and light wavelength, following Rayleigh's law of scattering where scattering is proportional to the inverse fourth power of the wavelength. This explains why sunsets appear yellowish and why clouds appear white.

Total internal reflection occurs when light travels from a denser to rarer medium at an angle above the critical angle, causing the light to be totally reflected at the boundary rather than refracted. A prism uses refraction to disperse white light into a spectrum of colors due to different wavelengths bending by different amounts.

to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover

- 1. 7. There are many optical phenomena in the sky. To name 3: rainbows, sundogs and mirages. Explain fully how each one if formed, including how they are the same or different. Why do we only see a rainbow on the earth but in a plane, you can see a whole circle is one of the thing that should be explained. Solution Rainbow- A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Sundogs- Sundogs, parhelia, are formed by plate crystals high in the cirrus clouds that occur world-wide. In cold climates the plates can also be in ground level as diamond dust. Mirages- Its formation is a result of the refraction and the total internal reflection of light in the air. To investigate the formation of a mirage, we firstly need to understand why light is refracted in the air. Regions of air at different temperatures have different refractive indexes, just like many different mediums.
