Annual Board &
Organization Planning
With how busy wrapping up a year can be
sometimes planning for the next year can
get lost in the shuffle. Planning out the next
year in advance of it starting allows
organization leaders to be strategic in
addressing priorities, approaching projects
and managing timelines. This includes
setting board and committee meeting
schedules and tentative topics that will
need to be discussed or decided on at each
meeting. During this session we will discuss
the need for mapping out the year,
communication with board members and
tools that are helpful in organizing it all.

Editor's Notes

  • #2  Excited about the group here today. I know that I have learned things from many of you as I observe you in your role Let’s start off with everyone introducing them selves
  • #3 Thank you. As we go through this presentation I want folks to also share their tips and tricks I am more productive when I know what I need to accomplish. Mapping out what needs to get done helps me plan out and prepare better It also allows me to prepare folks for upcoming conversation and decisions I like structure that can be flexible I spend a lot of time thinking about how I am preparing SKC for it’s next leader. That leader may change things and they should But, if the structures are in place to start with it will be easier for them to navigate transition I also visit with nonprofits that when I ask, “when is your next board meeting” I get responses like we schedule when we need one OR I’m trying to get one together for later this week or next week This is not good governance Board members can not plan their schedules or be as engaged as they should be People with generally plan around what they can and let you know well in advance if they can’t (obviously with exceptions)
  • #5 Involves thinking about both staff and Board
  • #6 Determine what needs to happen Is it a meeting A drop in Something formal or informal Organizationally 1 on 1’s Group meetings around projects Delegate ownership and coach that leader Board Chair Board Committees Committee Chairs Other Set a standard schedule Get feedback from those that are involved Make it consistent Schedule the meetings for the entire year Put them on the calendars
