William Shakespeare was a playwright and actor in London in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He became very successful but retired to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1613. The Tempest draws on common Shakespearean motifs and is classified as a romance. It involves Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, using magic on an island to get revenge on those who wronged him, including his brother Antonio. In the end, Prospero chooses forgiveness over revenge.
