This document discusses how cybersecurity has traditionally been seen as an IT issue rather than a business issue, and how management information systems (MIS) can help bridge the gap between cybersecurity and business operations. The key points made are:
1) Cybersecurity departments collect and analyze large amounts of business data but have struggled to define meaningful metrics and communicate risks to business stakeholders in a way that supports decision-making.
2) MIS understands how to support business decision-making through reporting and can help cybersecurity define key performance indicators that are meaningful to the business rather than just technical metrics.
3) By gaining access to cybersecurity data and integrating cybersecurity elements into existing reporting, MIS can act as a translator between

Legal Analytics, Machine Learning and Some Comments on the Status of Innovat...Daniel Katz
This document summarizes a presentation on legal analytics and machine learning. It discusses three faces of innovation in law: (1) lawyers for innovators/entrepreneurs, (2) lawyers innovating substantive legal areas, and (3) lawyers innovating business processes. It provides examples of predictive analytics using machine learning methods like classification, regression, and clustering. Specifically, it discusses using regression to predict legal costs and how machine learning could transform e-discovery through techniques like predictive coding (classification of documents as relevant/not relevant). Overall, the presentation outlines the growing role of data and machine learning in innovating and transforming the legal industry.
Innovation in the Legal Services Industry - "The Future is Already Here, It i...Daniel Katz
This document discusses innovation in the legal services industry and outlines several chapters of a story about the current changes and challenges facing law firms. This document outlines the importance of social media for law firms and lawyers. It discusses the goals of understanding why social media is important, the types of social media platforms and their benefits, who is using social media effectively, and important ethical considerations. Some key points include: 59% of lawyers said their firms have a social media presence in 2013, up from 17% in 2010. LinkedIn, blogs, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook are the top social media platforms for law firms. Firms should have a LinkedIn company page and lawyer profiles at a minimum. Ethical rules on confidentiality and conflicts of interest apply to social media conduct.
RWDG Webinar: Align Data Modeling with Data GovernanceDATAVERSITY
Data Modeling can be described as the discipline of data definition and database design. Data Governance must be applied to the definition, production, and usage of data in order to be effective. So therefore data modeling is an effective way to initiate a program to govern your data.
Join Bob Seiner for this month’s installment of the RWDG webinar series that will focus on how to align data modeling as a core competency of an effective data governance program. Data modeling that results in solid business definition and database design lays the groundwork for improved business understanding of the organization’s most important data.
In this webinar Bob will discuss:
Data modeling as a data governance discipline
Using data modeling to improve the business understanding of data
Why the data model is a key data governance artifact
How to use the data model as an effective communications tool
Including modeling as a core service associated with data governance

Smart Process Design: Continuous Improvement to Leverage the Right Technology...Daniel W. Linna Jr.
Corporate Legal Operations Institute, May 2017
A technology-first approach can distract us from asking the right questions and solving the right problems. We must start with processes. By designing smart processes, we can increase the efficiency and quality of legal service delivery, generate actionable data, and pave the way for future continuous improvement. We will:
• Introduce smart processes for gathering data and improving efficiency, quality, and substantive outcomes;
• Use maps as knowledge production and management tools that can also be used for communication and training; and
• Discuss how cross-functional alignment and communication between the legal ops team, in-house counsel, and the other departments of the business can be furthered with this approach.

Lifting the Corporate Veil. Power Point Presentationseri bangash
"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. However, there are certain situations where courts may decide to "pierce" or "lift" the corporate veil, holding shareholders or members personally liable for the debts or actions of the corporation.
Here are some common scenarios in which courts might lift the corporate veil:
Fraud or Illegality: If shareholders or members use the corporate structure to perpetrate fraud, evade legal obligations, or engage in illegal activities, courts may disregard the corporate entity and hold those individuals personally liable.
Undercapitalization: If a corporation is formed with insufficient capital to conduct its intended business and meet its foreseeable liabilities, and this lack of capitalization results in harm to creditors or other parties, courts may lift the corporate veil to hold shareholders or members liable.
Failure to Observe Corporate Formalities: Corporations and LLCs are required to observe certain formalities, such as holding regular meetings, maintaining separate financial records, and avoiding commingling of personal and corporate assets. If these formalities are not observed and the corporate structure is used as a mere façade, courts may disregard the corporate entity.
Alter Ego: If there is such a unity of interest and ownership between the corporation and its shareholders or members that the separate personalities of the corporation and the individuals no longer exist, courts may treat the corporation as the alter ego of its owners and hold them personally liable.
Group Enterprises: In some cases, where multiple corporations are closely related or form part of a single economic unit, courts may pierce the corporate veil to achieve equity, particularly if one corporation's actions harm creditors or other stakeholders and the corporate structure is being used to shield culpable parties from liability.
