5Bs a School
Dress code for
the 21st Century
Michael Maxson M.Ed
Introduction
 People in the United States in the 21st Century have greater
rights than ever before when it comes to what they choose to
wear.
 However, it’s important to note that many environments, such
as businesses, courts, and organizations, still hold to strict
standards of dress.
 Schools are one such environment. Especially since many
kinds of dress can disrupt the learning environment.
 This presentation is meant as a guideline and can be modified
for dress codes in any environment.
 This Example Environment reflects the Public Schools of
North Carolina in March 2016.
5Bs- What not to show.
 Breast Cleavage
 Butt Cleavage
 Bicep Cleavage
 Belly Cleavage
 Body Cleavage
Breast Cleavage
Butt Cleavage
Bicep Cleavage
Belly Cleavage
Body Cleavage
Conclusion
 The bottom line is dress for the environment.
 Also, know what the people in that environment find
acceptable and especially offensive when it comes to
clothing.
 Always ask about dress, however, be aware that some
people have the assumption that you “know how to
dress right” so always check out any environment for
rules regarding dress, and if in doubt dress
conservatively, men- jacket and ties, women- long
dress or professional suit.
 If you’re in the military, police, fire, ems, your uniform is
always a good choice.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 While appropriate at the pool, the gym, the fashion runway, celebrity award shows, and other places Breast Cleavage is frowned upon in most professional environments, and it’s sexulization makes it inappropriate for the school environment. This also goes for the exposure of bras and other underclothes.
  • #6 Butt cleavage, top or bottom is not acceptable in professional environments and offensive to many people so it shouldn’t be allowed in a public education environment. This includes underclothes sticking out from the area as well.
  • #7 Once again while appropriate for the gym and the beach, tank, and spaghetti type shirts which expose the shoulders of both males and females are not appropriate in most professional environments and not appropriate for the Educational Environment as well.
  • #8 Once again, nice on the beach or out and about or on a summer day, but 6 pack, or beer belly, showing off your belly is not appropriate in most school and business environments.
  • #9 Tight fitting clothing like leggings or workout pants might be alright at the gym, but in most cases are not appropriate in the Professional and School Environments. Especially tight fitting clothing that shows the outline of the breasts, the crotch, or the buttocks areas.
