Having to cope with an alcoholic spouse can really be
a concern. We all care to be the most cherished
object in our spouses’ life but having an alcoholic
spouse can indisputably dash this desire. An
alcoholic craves to drink more than any other activity
and this creates some sort of friction in the

HELP YOURSELF FIRST
I know you might be thinking, “help myself?” “I am
not the alcoholic here!”. The fact is that if you have
been living with an alcoholic spouse, there are high
tendencies you have also imperceptibly become sick
with your spouse. So you must understand that all
those abuses, insults and chaos must have drifted
your psychology negatively. If you can’t help yourself
get the right frame of mind, you definitely can’t help
him/her stop drinking.
After helping yourself, then you are ready for the
second step.

UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION YOU ARE IN
You must have a good awareness of the situation in
which you find yourself. Alcoholism (alcohol
dependence) is a chronic illness marked by dependence
on alcohol consumption. It interferes with physical or
mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities.
This addiction can result in liver, circulatory, and
neurological problems. According to the U.S. National
Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, about 28% of
American adults drink at levels that put them at risk for
alcohol dependence and alcohol-related problems.
Like the saying in the Al Anon, "You didn't cause it, you
can't control it and you cannot cure it." That passes to
say the success of your effort depends on your spouse’s
cooperation.

INTERACTIONAL GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY
Joining a support group like the Alcoholics
Anonymous (Al Anon) can be of immense help in
helping your alcoholic spouse. Members discuss how
to deal with alcoholic spouses and family members
and provide support for each other. Encouraging
your spouse to join this support group can be of
immense help in helping him/her quit drinking. It's
completely anonymous, extremely supportive and
healing. You can help him/her make time for support
group meetings or drive him/her to counseling

DON'T COVER HIM/HER UP
There are behaviors and actions that many spouses
of alcoholics don’t realize enables their alcoholic
spouse to drink more. Several ways in which you may
be enabling your spouse to drink is by buying them
alcohol, drinking with them, calling the boss and or
family members for him/her because he/she is too
hung over or too drunk to do it him/herself. Lying to
friends, boss, family and co-workers about him/her
and his/her drinking problem will also make him/her
more reluctant to quit drinking. You shouldn’t do this
for him/her. Alcoholics can promise never to drink
again just to dodge from responsibility. Giving to
such antics can enable them to see drinking just
okay.

DON’T BE JUDGMENTAL OR USE LABELS
Alcoholics deal with their emotions by drinking and
for that reason it will be detrimental if you pass
judgment on your alcoholic spouse or use labels for
him/her. You must understand that alcoholism is a
disease and just like you will not judge or use labels
for a cancer patient, you are not supposed to do for
an alcoholic, though the difference there seem to be
between alcoholism and cancer is the fact that the
alcoholic was responsible for this dis-ease. If you use
labels or try to shame your alcoholic spouse, this will
feed his/her alcoholism and give him/her a reason to
reach for the bottle. Most alcoholics do not know
what else to do in the face of emotions; particularly
fear and shame.
