After getting an MBA from Northwestern, he worked at Microsoft from 1991-1999 but left to focus on helping the poor. In 2000, he started Room to Read after being moved by the lack of books at a school in Nepal. Room to Read has now established over 12,500 libraries, published 10 million books, built 1,500 schools, and supported 13,500 girls' education, impacting 6 million children total.

John Wood founded the global non-profit Room to Read after seeing poor education conditions in Nepal. He had previously worked at Microsoft for nearly a decade, holding various marketing and business development roles. In 1998, while trekking in Nepal, Wood visited a dilapidated school with too few books for the large number of students. Determined to help, he collected over 3,000 books within two months. He returned to Nepal with the books and was inspired to leave Microsoft in 1999 to focus full-time on improving literacy and gender equality in education through Room to Read. The organization has since constructed 1,930 schools, established 17,534 libraries, distributed over 15 million books, and benefited more than 9 million children.

- 2. Born in January 1964, in Hartford, Connecticut where he spent his childhood there. Obtained a degree in University of Colorado Chosen for executive director for Microsoft.
- 3. He was a world re-owned social entrepreneur. Made great connections between Microsoft and his non-profit group to reduce the rate of illiteracy. Made a trip to Nepal to donate books for those people living in high-altitude mountains.
- 4. Before leaving Microsoft, in 1998 he took handful of books and donated the 450 students in Nepal , but there are not enough books and headmaster said “Perhaps, sir, you will someday come back with books,“ which inspired him greatly. John came back one year later with 3000 books for the school, and had a decision for leaving Microsoft. After he left Microsoft he publish a book.
- 5. He was officially the co-founder of Room to Read Currently impacted people all over the world especially Bangladesh, India and Vietnam. As the co-founder of Room to read, he rose the poor countries literacy rate and encourage girls to enter secondary schools In 2012, Room to Read has established 16000 schools, 13500 libraries, distributed 11 million books and publish 707 books benefiting 6 million children to read.
