CCT programs in El Salvador led to improvements in some maternal health outcomes. The study found increases in skilled attendance at birth, birth in hospitals, but no impact on pre-natal or post-natal care. The impacts are likely due to a combination of increased access to health facilities, empowerment of women through cash transfers and knowledge gained in training sessions, rather than any individual factor. Conditioning the program on pre-natal visits could potentially further increase the maternal health benefits.
