Subtraction without
and with regrouping
LESSON 4
Direction: Read the given problem below.
Then answer the questions that follow.
The pupils in Kristine’s class sent 18
messages tied to 18 doves. So far, they have
only received 12 replies. How many
messages were not answered? _____
Study the two equations. Observe that both have the same numbers, which are
6, 12, and 18. However, they used two different operations.
In the first equation, 6 + 12 = 18, we add 12 to 6. In the second equation, 18 –
12 = 6, we deducted 12 from 18. We call this process of deducting one number
from another number subtraction. It involves taking away numbers.
Today, you are going to
learn about subtraction
without and with
regrouping.
Subtraction is the inverse of addition. It means to take
away a number or a part from another number to get a
value called difference.
Parts of a subtraction sentence:
The minuend is the number from which we subtract.
The subtrahend is the number we subtract.
The difference is the answer in subtraction.
Addition and subtraction are opposites. They undo each
other as operations.
Here are some terms used or associated with
subtraction:
Subtraction Without Regrouping
Let's first arrange the numbers in
column form, according to place
value.
Now, let's subtract, starting from the Ones place. Then, go
one place to the left until you reach the Thousands place.
The
difference
is 3,207.
Subtraction With Regrouping
First, we arrange the numbers in
column form.
Now, let's subtract the numbers, starting from Ones
place. We do not have enough Ones in the minuend to
take away from. We can do regrouping.
We take 1 Ten from 9 Tens to form 10 Ones. Then, we
give these 10 Ones to the Ones place. Now, the Ones
place has 14 Ones.
Now, let's subtract the digits at the Ones
place, and then the digits at the Tens place.
Now, let's move to the digits at the
Hundreds place.
Again, we don't have
enough Hundreds in the
minuend. So, once again, we
will do regrouping.
This time, we will take 1 Thousand from 8
Thousands to form 10 Hundreds. Then, we give
these 10 Hundreds to the Hundreds place. Now, we
have 13 Hundreds in the Hundreds place.
Let's finish the subtraction
now!
The difference
is 2,939.
To find out if your answer is
correct, add the difference
and the subtrahend. If the
sum is the same as the
minuend, your answer is
correct.
