For Dhannipur villagers, development a bigger concern than Mosque
Ayodhya (PTI): Resi-
dents of Dhannipur vil-
lage in Bikapur Assem-
bly segment here are
more concerned about
the development of
their area instead of the
mosque, set to come up
at a site allotted there
following the SC verdict
in the Ramjanmabhoo-
mi case.
In accordance with
the apex court order,
five acres have been al-
lotted for the mosque,
whose site is about 20
km away from the spot
where a massive temple
of Lord Ram is coming
up in Ayodhya.
Ejaz, a resident of
the area, says people of
different faiths live
peacefully at Dhan-
nipur village.
“Peopleonlywantde-
velopment and nothing
else,” he says.
Another local Afroz
Alam, says “mandir-
masjid” is no point of
discussion among peo-
ple here. We are more
concerned about bet-
terment of civic facili-
ties, he says.
Candidates for the
polls also tell the same.
Congress candidate
Akhilesh Yadav says, “I
have visited Dhannipur
during campaigning.
People here want devel-
opment. They wish the
redress of their day-to-
day problems and will
be voting for a change.”
The mosque site is a
non-issue among them,
he says.
“I don’t think this
(mosque site) will hard-
ly have any impact on
the elections,” he adds.
His BJP rival Amit
Chauhan too says peo-
ple with whom he inter-
acted at the village
wanted development.
“People crave all-
round development of
the village,” he says.
“The proposed
mosque is not at all an
issueinthiselection.We
are contesting the polls
on development plank,”
the BJP candidate says.
SP candidate Firoz
Khan, who lives barely
a km away from the
mosque site, too ex-
presses same views.
“The proposed
mosque is not a topic in
the polls,” he says, add-
ing development is the
main issue.
AIMIM president As-
aduddin Owaisi, who
hadlaunchedhisparty’s
campaign in September
last year from Rasu-
labad village, not far
from the mosque site,
has not fielded any can-
didate in Bikapur.

First India Bureau
A m b e d k a r n a g a r,
Taking a swipe at the al-
liance of SP and BSP,
CM Yogi on Saturday
said the BSP’s elephant
was ‘tumbling here and
there’ and SP’s ‘bicycle
will puncture’ under the
weight of the ‘elephant’.
Addressingaseriesof
rallies in Ambedkar Na-
gar, CM Yogi said, “Ye
haathi to waise bhi id-
har-udharfisalrahahai.
Those who fought with
‘elephant’ last time are
now fighting with an-
other party
. It’s quite ob-
vious that when an ‘ele-
phant’ couldn’t handle
theweightof ‘their’mis-
deeds, then the ‘cycle’ is
ought to get punctured.”
Training guns at the
previous governments
for consuming all the
ration in the state
meant for poor, the CM
said, “Those who ate
the poor’s ration, we’ve
bulldozers for them.
Power of bulldozer is
such that it is used for
construction of
Purvanchal express-
ways as well as to raze
the properties of cor-
rupt leaders.”
Invoking Ram Mano-
har Lohia, Yogi said he
was a great socialist
thinker. “In 1960, Lohia
started Ramayana
Mela in various dis-
tricts. Now, his present
followers shoot at Ram
Bhakts,” adding that
Lohia used to say that a
true socialist must stay
away from property
and progeny.
But the slogan of
these so-called social-
ists (‘kathit samajwadi)
is ‘Sabka Saath, Saifai
pariwar ka vikas’ (sup-
port of all and develop-
ment of only family be-
longing to Saifai), he
said.
Slamming the Akh-
ilesh-led SP, the CM
said those who in the
reigns of the previous
governments used to
roam around with pis-
tols in their pockets
were now carrying the
“Bajrang Bali’s mace”
to show that they have
changed for the better.
“When we come back
in the 2024 LS polls,
most of these ‘pariwar-
vadis’ will be offering
‘Kar Seva’ with Ram
devotees in Ayodhya.
This is a symbol of the
BJP’s ideological vic-

UP Assembly election
stands at the gate of cru-
cial East UP, which will
decide the fate of power
contenders in the state.
With fifth phase sched-
uled to go polls on Feb
27 in east UP, a debate
has ensued in Purvan-
chal about stray cattle
menace and its likely
impact on electoral out-
come on remaining three
phases. The BJP has
belatedly realised that
“stray cattle” menace i is
an issue it can ill-af-
ford to ignore and has
thus launched massive
damage control exercise
to contain anger among
the people in rural areas.
The SP has howev-
er targeted the Yogi
government for ignoring
the problems all these
years and destroying
the farmers. PM Modi
and CM Yogi are now
assuring people to find
a lasting solution to the
crisis. The government
had identified around
31 districts facing stray
cattle menace and most
are in remaining three
phases. Even though the
problem is in entire UP, it
is serious in east UP and
Bundelkhand.

PRISON REFORMS
ARE NEED OF THE
HOUR, AND SC
SHOWS THE WAY
he Supreme Court
has taken a big step
towards the much-
needed prison re-
forms in the country
.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Kis-
han Kaul and MM Sundresh em-
phasised on government and
courts adopting a reformative
approach by allowing bail to
those who have spent 10-14 years
in jail while serving a life term.
Remittingtheirsentencecanalso
be considered, the bench said.
The approach will help reform a
prisonerandalsoreducethehigh
number of pendency of cases.
The Supreme Court observed
that the poor and underprivi-
leged languish in jail, while the
rich and influential can secure
bail and also escape the law by
fleeing the country
.
While the government has to
take the call on remission of sen-
tence, High Courts have to be
more responsive towards the
plight of prisoners whose cases
often don’t come up for hearing
for months and that skews the
disposal rate. The order will go a
long way in alleviating the plight
of prisoners.
T
ermany is getting
all the flak for be-
ing Europe’s weak
link in its re-
sponse to Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine. Former
defence minister A. Kramp-
Karrenbauer tweeted, “I’m so
angry at ourselves for our
historical failure. After Geor-
gia, Crimea, and Donbas, we
have not prepared anything
that would have really de-
terred Putin.” On the contra-
ry, Germany’s navy chief
Vice-Admiral Kay-Achim
Schonbach while visiting In-
dia spoke in favour of Rus-
sian President Vladimir Pu-
tin “should be given the re-
spect he deserves”. He also
said that Crimea may not go
back to Ukraine. Schonbach
had to resign after making
that statement.
Some hesitancy on the part
of Germany is being felt in its
response to the Ukraine crisis
and that, as Latvia’s defence
minister Artis Pabrik said,
“Europeansecuritycannotbe
done without a leading Ger-
man role”. German Chancel-
lor Olaf Scholz recently ruled
out providing lethal weapons
to Ukraine while aligning
himself with other EU poli-
cies. Instead of weapons, Ber-
lin reportedly offered to send
5,000helmetsandmedicalaid.
It is not known if the helmets
are going to be bullet proof.

My dear Natwar,
I was so glad to read your letter of 22 November.
I shall indeed be very glad if you can get me the N.Y.T review of your
anthology
. I have not yet received the copy of the book from the publish-
ers. Sea mail takes more time.
I am not surprised you so much like the service
under Smt. Indira Gandhi. She is splendidly endowed
with all the graces of a good civilized lady
. She grew
up under the example of her gracious father.
I can never forget the moving gesture of her affec-
tion when she came and received my daughter at the
Delhi railway station (Mrs. Devadas Gandhi), when
I took her to Delhi from Bombay after she unexpect-
edly and cruelly lost her husband. Indira Gandhi whom I did not expect
was at the station and led my daughter to the car like a sister. The touch
was a consolation both to her and to me. This was August 1957, when I
had already begun openly and severely to criticise Jawaharlalji.
Yours Sincerely

My dear Natwar,
Thank you so much for your letter of the 3rd February
.
How nice of you to have talked to President Kaunda about the Unit-
ed World College. In your letter you say, “Sir Ian’s
material arrived just in time. KK was interested in
the project. As I did not wish to add to his paper work
I took the liberty of telling him that you would be
writing to him. He was delighted.”
This is slightly ambiguous to me because I am not
sure whether you left behind the material which Ian
Gourlay had given you, with the President, or wheth-
er you want me to send a new lot of material to the
President. In any case, I imagine it is best not to worry him about this
until shortly before his visit in the summer, as then I can ask for an
interview to discuss it all with him.
I can also discuss all this with the Prince of Wales, who really is now
in charge.
With best wishes to you and Hem.
Yours ever,
[Mountbatten of Burma]
PS
Since dictating the above I have had your second letter and have
seen John Baratt and he tells me that he has already spoken to you
over telephone and is arranging for us to meet at my little house in
London, 2 Kinnerton Street, SW1, on my return from
Germany, either on the evening of 6th or the morning
of 7th September.
I look forward very much to seeing you then

My dear Natwar,
So the world’s largest democracy has chosen a woman to lead! Indu’s
election has made history- I hope and pray she may be given the wis-
dom. At present the nation is jubilant but when the first excitement
wears off, the usual criticism and fault finding will
begin. It is then that she must be tolerant and have
safe counsel.
The air is thick with rumour about the new cabi-
net and the names will be known to you long before
you receive this letter. I do not know who Indu’s con-
fidants are, except of course, Uma Shankar Dikshit
who has been ‘Eminence Grise’ for many years. But
whoever advises, I hope for the sake of the country
the advice is just and sound.
We are facing a crisis of great magnitude, not only matters like food,
Tashkent etc., but the physiological crisis which has us in its grip and
needs the full hand and far seeing vision of a read leader____________
26th. I was interrupted and now the new Government is in power. A
definitely right-wing government and one over which the establishment
will have some control. I hope Indu gets cooperation and support.
The manner in which the world has hailed the election has been most
heart-warming.
This is the stranger letter- do forgive me. I am now in Bombay help-
ing Tara to move into her flat. I shall return in time for parliament.
	 Write when opportunity offers.

My dear Natwar,
What a joy it was being with you in Delhi. I miss you badly, I tell you.
Have you no business which can bring you to Mysore?
I used to be hopeless letter writer before, but now I promise improve-
ment. I am going to write to you as often as I hear from you, and if I
don’t hear from you I will always leave one at credit.
I want some more copies of the photo with the
P.M., preferably some that include Indira, and the
negative of my picture. Could you manage all this?
Iwouldhesitatetobotheranyoneaboutphotographs,
but the occasion is special and I feel I can take this
liberty with you. Thank you.
Did you manage that piece for The Hindustan
Times? How did it go?
I am in torment about the choice of a theme for my next novel. I am
thinking of a new subject each day and rejecting it after a few hours
of enthusiastic speculation. The most acceptable seems to be Woman-
eater of Malgudi!
Please give my remembrance to Deep (An intimate friend of mine.

Bengaluru (PTI): The
murder of a 27-year-old
Bajrang Dal activist
Harsha Hindu in the
city of Shivamogga in
Karnataka by a gang of
armed men on Febru-
ary 20 is being current-
ly viewed by police as a
localised crime stem-
ming from a long-stand-
ing communal rivalry,
even as investigations
are looking closely at
how the gang of 10 peo-
ple who have been ar-
rested so far assembled
to carry out the murder.
All the arrested indi-
viduals have been sent
to police custody till
March 7 by a local court.
The timing of the
murder of the right-
wing activist, who has
antagonised Muslims
in the region in the past
with derogatory re-
marks against Islam on
social media, amid the
ongoing protests over
restrictions on wearing
the hijab by Muslim
girls in schools and col-
leges is also under po-
lice scrutiny
.
“There is no immedi-
ate motive that has
emerged from the inves-
tigations into the mur-
der. It seems to be part
of a long rivalry be-
tween Hindutva gangs
and Muslim gangs in
the area,” a senior po-
lice official said while
indicating that further
investigations are on.
Harsha Nagaraj alias
Harsha Hindu was
murdered on the night
of February 20 in the
Doddapet police station
limits of Shivamogga
after he left home to
have dinner at a restau-
rant with a couple of
friends. A gang that
was lying in wait in a
car and an auto rick-
shaw hacked the Ba-
jrang Dal worker to
death with swords
when he got separated
from his associates for
a while. Shivamogga
witnessed a brief spell
of violence the next
morning when Har-
sha’s funeral proces-
sion was taken out.
The investigation so
far has allegedly re-
vealed that the main
accused Mohammed
Kashif (30), who was
reportedly identified
by witnesses at the
crime scene and was
detained a few hours
after the murder,
brought together the
gang that was involved
in the murder.

New Delhi: The
Bharatiya Janata Par-
ty is worried about
Maharashtra. It seems
that it has not being
able to digest the joint
government of Shiv
Sena, NCP and Con-
gress, termed the
Maha Vikas Agadi
(MVA) in Maharash-
tra. At first the BJP
tried to form the gov-
ernment in some way
and when it did not get
success, and MVA gov-
ernment was formed,
thereafter, from day
one, the Maharashtra
BJP leaders have been
giving deadlines by
which, according to
them, the MVA gov-
ernment will fall. That
is why it seems that
along with the politi-
cal efforts of the BJP,
the efforts of some
other ‘power centres’
have also intensified.
First Home Minister
Anil Deshmukh was
arrested and now
Nawab Malik has been
arrested by the ED.
Apart from these, the
sword is hanging on
about a dozen minis-
ters, MLAs, MPs in-
cluding Shiv Sena MP
Sanjay Raut.
Three days ago, BJP
leader and senior cen-
tral government min-
ister Narayan Rane
had said that the ED’s
notice is ready against
four leaders of Maha-
vikas Aghadi. Think,
he said and in three
days the ED team
reached the place of a
senior minister with a
notice and arrested
him too. The question
is, how did Narayan
Rane know about the
preparations of the
ED? Maybe his ‘extra
knowledge’ of the
functioning of central
agencies in Mumbai
region. Notably, Shiv
Sena’s powerful MP
Sanjay Raut had ac-
cused only a few days
back those central
agencies are being
misused against the
state government!
However, on one
hand the central agen-
cies are after the min-
isters and leaders of
the state and on the
other hand the state
government agencies
are taking action
against the central
government ministers
and BJP leaders. BMC
officials have also
probed the alleged il-
legal construction of
Narayan Rane’s bun-
galow in Juhu. Sanjay
Raut has said that sep-
arate rooms is being
prepared in the jail for
four big leaders of BJP.
Word is that the state’s
Anti-Corruption Bu-
reau (ACB), state po-
lice and Brihanmum-
bai Municipal Corpo-
ration (BMC) officials
are preparing the files
of BJP leaders.
The way the state
agencies harassed the
BJP leaders in West
Bengal against the ac-
tion of the central
agencies, similarly
preparations are being
made in Maharashtra
to take action. In this
way, it may be the be-
ginning of another un-
fortunate chapter in
the relationship of the
Centre and the Maha-
rashtra government.

Polio in coming months: Mandaviya
New Delhi (ANI):
Since the neighbouring
countries are still not
polio-free, India needs
to remain vigilant and
continue with its vacci-
nation programme
against the disease,
Health Minister Man-
sukh Mandaviya said
on Saturday, highlight-
ing that door-to-door
inoculation campaigns
will be conducted to en-
sure that no one is left
behind.
The minister, who
launched the National
Polio Immunisation
Drive for 2022 by admin-
istering polio drops to
children below five
years of age said over 15
crore children aged be-
low five years will be
vaccinated against the
disease in the coming
months. “India’s strate-
gic fight against polio is
a success story of the
country’s public health
policy against vaccine-
preventable diseases.
We need to continue to
be vigilant and ensure
that every child under
five years of age must
get polio drops,” Man-
daviya said.
Under the leadership
of Prime Minister Nar-

protect children from
more diseases than ever
before and has intro-
duced several new vac-

Keep in mind that
from March 14, the sec-

AMID RUSSIA-UKRAINE CRISIS
PM CALLS UPON PRIVATE FIRMS TO
ENTER MEDICAL SECTOR IN BIG WAY
New Delhi (PTI): Not-
ing that Indian students
have been going to
many small countries
for medical education
despite the language
barrier, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Sat-
urday urged the private
sector to make a big
presence in the field.
Speaking after inau-
gurating a webinar on
the Union budget an-
nouncements on the
health sector, Modi sug-
gested that state govern-
ments should also for-
mulate good policies for
land allotment for medi-
cal education so that In-
dia could produce a
large number of doctors
and paramedics to fulfil
even global demand.
His remarks assume
significance at a time
when a large number of
Indian students, many
of them studying medi-
cine, have been stuck in
Ukraine following the
Russian attack on that
country
.
Modi made no direct
mention of the crisis
though. The prime min-
ister said Indian stu-
dents going abroad for
study, especially in
medical education, also
result in hundreds of
billions of rupees exit-
ing the country as well.
Our children today
are going to small coun-
tries for study, especial-
ly in medical education.
Language is a problem
there. They are still go-
ing...Can our private
sector not enter this
field in a big way? Can
our state governments
not frame good policies
for land allotment re-
garding this, he asked.
India can benefit a lot
from its demographic
dividend in this field,
he said, adding Indian
doctors have enhanced
the country's prestige
across the world in the
last many decades with
their work.
In the webinar, Modi
also highlighted his
government's efforts to
provide quality health
as well as wellness ser-
vices to people with its
holistic approach to the
healthcare system.

WHEN PANDIT
NEHRU SHARED
HIS PHOOLPUR
SEAT WITH
ANOTHER MP
India’s first Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru dominated
India’s political landscape for a
decade-and-half after
Independence. He was the
Member of Parliament from
Phoolpur, a seat adjoining his
hometown Allahabad. But only a
few know about a local
Congressman, Masuria Din
Pasi, who shared the Phoolpur
seat with Nehru in the Lok
Sabha. Being a reserved seat,
the constituency elected two
MPs to Parliament- one general
and one Scheduled Caste. Pasi
was elected to the first and
second LS from Phoolpur in
1952 and 1957 along with
Nehru. In 1961, the provision
for dual membership in
Parliament and Legislative
Assemblies was scrapped by an
act of Parliament after former
President VV Giri lost the 1957
Lok Sabha elections from a
dual-member constituency in
Andhra Pradesh. Pasi then
shifted to the adjoining Chail
constituency and won two more
elections to the Lok Sabha in
1962 and 1967. Pasi was also a
member of the Constituent
Assembly and the provisional
Parliament. His son Shashi
Prakash also won from Chail on
a Janata Dal ticket in 1991. The
Chail Lok Sabha seat ceased to
exist after the 2008 delimitation.
A new constituency was carved
out of some assembly segments
of Allahabad and Pratapgarh
and named Kaushambi.

RAM TEMPLE
ONLY ONE OF
THE ISSUES
The construction of Ram temple
seems to have been relegated
to one of the poll issues in
Ayodhya this time as competing
parties are raking up development
topics and also relying on caste
arithmetic for victory. The BJP, for
whom the temple town sharpened
its Hindutva plank, is facing a
challenge particularly from the
Samajwadi Party (SP) in the
ongoing state polls. With 10
candidates in fray, the Ayodhya
Assembly segment will go to vote
in the fifth phase on February 27.
After it became clear that Chief
Minister Yogi Adityanath would
not contest from Ayodhya, the
party reposed faith in sitting MLA
Ved Prakash Gupta, while the SP
has fielded former minister Tej
Narayan alias Pawan Pandey. The
BSP, Congress and AAP, too, have
fielded their candidates in
Ayodhya, thereby making it a
multi-cornered contest. “It is
going to be a close contest in the
Ayodhya Assembly constituency.
As far as the issue of Ram temple
is concerned, the BJP was not able
to derive optimum mileage during
this election initially. The issue
started cropping up only after the
third phase of the polls,” Mahant
Raju Das of Hanumangarhi temple
told PTI. He said while the
distribution of ration to the poor
has benefitted people in rural
areas, a number of party leaders,
on the other hand, were of the
view that they will be able to
garner enough votes only with
Modi and Adityanath’s credentials.
They did not want to mingle with
the people and connect with them,
he said. On whether the scene
would have been different if
Adityanath were to contest from
Ayodhya, the mahant said, “There
is no opposition to BJP, there was
an opposition only towards the
candidate.” —First India Bureau

POLITICS OF CASTE, RELIGION
‘UP not developed because you vote for caste, religion’: Priyanka Gandhi tells voters
First India Bureau
Balrampur: Congress

on Saturday blamed
the politics of caste

the non-Congress gov-

such a situation
emerged, and its direct
answer is that since the
past 30 years, it has been
politics in the name of
caste and religion, Pri-
yanka said at an elec-
tion meeting in Pani-
yara. She said the Bahu-
jan Samaj Party, Sama-
jwadi Party and the BJP
were able to form gov-
ernments only by ex-
ploiting the emotions of
the people over caste
and religion, and hence,
the state did not see de-
velopment.For such a
state of affairs, you all

have made it their (lead-
ers) habit that there is
no need to work. You
will vote by closing your
eyes on emotional is-
sues even if your chil-
dren remain unem-
ployed, Priyanka said
addressing the voters.
Attacking the BJP lead-
ers, she said, They come
here and talk about Pa-
kistan, terrorism, caste
and religion, but no one
talks about you.
Referring to the stray
cattle menace, she said
though she had written

GANGWAR MAY GET

Union Minister San-

extent that Gangwar di-

sources are to be be-

him saying, “don’t lose

ing of something big for
you, you start preparing
to head to Raj Bhavan.”
At once, all the sadness
wasremovedfromGang-
war’s face. After UP
, let’s
go to Patna. Ex- Union
Minister Ravi Shankar
Prasad after losing his
chair, was active in
Sangh’s various pro-

vised to distance him-
self from political fo-
rums, because he could

non-political, but consti-

are rife that the soft-spo-

Prakash Javadekar has
also got a hint that he
can be made Governor
of an important state.
WILL THE

After March 10, the
BJP intends to

WHY IS DIDI SO
ANGRY WITH
PK?
It is believed
that these
days Mamta
Banerjee is not
even happy with
P r a s h a n t
K i s h o r.
The rift
between
these two has grown so
big that on Abhishek
Banerjee’s advice, PK
has left Kolkata and is
focusing on Delhi. It is
said that this rift started
with municipal polls in
Bengal. Mamta had en-
trusted this work to PK.
When PK visited Bag-
dogra, he met Gorkha
leaders of Darjeeling
there and without ask-
ing Didi, he promised
them that TMC would
leave some seats of Silig-
uri Municipal Corpora-
tion for them and will
not field its candidates
on these seats. Mamata
went furious on this. In
view of Kolkata civic
polls, WB’s Local Intelli-
gence Unit complained
Mamta that they have
been asked for money in
lieu of tickets. Mamata
immediately cancelled
list issued a new one.
PK was also annoyed by
this and sent an SMS to
Mamta that it would be
difficult for him to work
in these circumstances,
to which Mamata re-
plied, ‘Ok’.
PK’s OVERWHELMING
AMBITIONS!
Prashant Kishor, the
country’s famous
election strategist,
called upon Telangana
CM K Chandrashekhar
Rao recently
. The meet-
ing lasted for a long
time that led to specula-
tions that the work of
TRS poll campaign was
given to PK’s company
‘IPAC’. After this, when
Chandrashekhar Rao
met Maharashtra CM
Uddhav Thackeray,
Uddhav asked,
“These days you
have started mak-
ing statements
against Modi, have
you hired PK?
Rao replied
sarcasti-
c a l l y ,
“ O u r
ship is very small, how
will he (PK) fit in it? He
is considering himself
as PM contender in
2029.” An uneasy si-
lence prevailed thereaf-

Lucknow: Politicians
can stoop down to any
level to win elections is
nothing new, They can
be seen touching the
feet of people of their
area, joining hands in
front of them during
election campaigns.
But a UP MLA has
touched a new low in
this matter.
After apologizing by
holding his ears and
doing sit ups in a re-
cent meeting, he even
was seen giving mas-
sage to an elderly voter
with oil. Its video has
now become viral on
social media.
The politician in the
video is BJP MLA and
candidate Bhupesh
Choubey of Rob-
ertsganj. In the video,
he is giving an oil mas-
sage to an elderly per-
son. Although it is not
clear about when the
video was made but af-
ter doing sit-ups on the

act is being discussed
widely. In Sonbhadra,
elections are to be held
in the seventh phase on
March 7. With only a
few days remaining for
polling, candidates are
making all attempts to
persuade voters. In the

Balrampur: Samajwa-

which will be “de-

In an apparent jibe

though the BJP gov-

backward only in doc-
uments and not by

are for saving democ-

Attacking Yogi,

“If the SP forms the

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze
that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,
a day when the cool brick paths

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking
a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,
releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage
so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting
into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

Drishti Phagwani, a fashion blogger said, “After
watchingfashionweeksaroundtheglobe.Iwouldsay
denim jackets with vintage touch (like puffer
arms), the white shaded denim pants and denim
corsets would be a classic touch for this spring if
one wants to ace both the couture end as well as
a street style look.” She added, “Denim, unlike
any other fabric, has a constant rage for every
season. We can see megastars like Julia fox,
Kanye west Kiara Alia Advani Deepika Padukone,
from fashion weeks to street style, denim is a rage
that is neverending. I love vintage style and the inspira-
tion of Schiaparelli.”
Nitin Singh Rajput, fashion influencer said,
“The classic look of a denim jacket continues to
be a hit this season as well. I’d add on a graphi-
cally detailed jacket to a basic outfit for an eye-
catching look or a contrasting colour denim
jacket to spruce up basic jeans and t-shirt look.”
Rajnandini Singh,
fashion influencer said,
“White denim is the per-
fect denim choice for
spring, especially when
it’s paired with a denim
jacket. The white colour
adds a fresh, light aes-
thetic to the look. Throw-
ing your denim jacket
over a dress is a must for
the season. It adds struc-
ture to a flowy dress.
Irfan Khan, a Fash-
ion model said, “I’d go
for a light super comfy
denim jacket this spring
season. The combina-
tion of thick cotton
sleeves and denim in the
middle looks different
and gets in a ton of com-
pliments. A look of den-
im on denim with a black
T-shirt would be a fail-
proof option.”

Institute of the
CSIR in Luc-

standardised drug
called ‘Picroliv’ to
treat Non-Alcoholic
Fatty Liver Disease
(NAFLD), which is
about to enter the third
phase of clinical test-
ing. The CSIR-CDRI
has been granted au-
thorization to under-
take clinical studies
among NAFLD pa-
tients in collaboration
with the ICMR to de-

ness and adverse ef-

clinical trials will be
conducted across six
hospitals in India,
including AIIMS
Delhi, ILBS Delhi,
PGIMER Chandi-
garh, KEM Mumbai,
NIMS Hyderabad and
KGMU Lucknow.
In a remarkable feat
against the NAFLD the
CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow
has developed the drug
‘Picroliv’ from the
plant Picrorhiza kur-
roa (also known
as Kutki) under the
Phytopharmaceutical
mode of Drug Control-
ler General India
(DCGI). The new drug
may help in the reduc-
tion of fat in the liver
and its subsequent
complications, revers-
ing severe hepatic con-
ditions such as cirrho-
sis and cancer.
 Consequently, there
is an increased need
for medicinal treat-
ment and this is where
CDRI’s Picroliv comes
into the picture. Earli-
er, the tests conducted
by the CDRI revealed
faster recovery and a
fall in bilirubin and
SGPT levels. On the
other hand, the cur-
rent clinical trial will
witness the reduction
in fat content of the
liver via MRI. The
drug will be available
after phase-III clinical
trial completion for
use in society
.
Dr Vivek Bhosale,
Medical expert, CSIR-
CDRI informed that it
is a common condition
in obese individuals or
people with diabetes.
Commonly there are
no symptoms, however,
there may be some
amount of abdominal
pain that may be con-
centrated in the cen-
tral or right upper part
of the abdomen. Pa-
tients also experience
fatigue and tiredness
and even cases of an
enlarged liver.

Dwarka: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asked his party leaders in Guja- rat to prepare a list of “Kauravas” in the party, who just “sit in their AC offices, do nothing but talk and disturb others”, add- ing that such people eventually cross over to the BJP. He also hit out at the Modi government over the use of central agencies, saying it has “CBI, ED, media, po- lice and goons”, and said ultimately it is the truth that matters. Alleging that Guja- rat is suffering be- cause of “BJP’s poli- tics”, he said Congress has an opportunity to win the next Assem- bly polls in the state, but it fails to convey a clear vision to the peo- ple about what it in- tends to do after it comes to power. In accordance with the apex court order, five acres have been al- lotted for the mosque, whose site is about 20 km away from the spot where a massive temple of Lord Ram is coming up in Ayodhya. Ejaz, a resident of the area, says people of different faiths live peacefully at Dhan- nipur village. “Peopleonlywantde- velopment and nothing else,” he says. Another local Afroz Alam, says “mandir- masjid” is no point of discussion among peo- ple here. We are more concerned about bet- terment of civic facili- ties, he says. Candidates for the polls also tell the same. Congress candidate Akhilesh Yadav says, “I have visited Dhannipur during campaigning. People here want devel- opment. They wish the redress of their day-to- day problems and will be voting for a change.” The mosque site is a non-issue among them, he says. “I don’t think this (mosque site) will hard- ly have any impact on the elections,” he adds. His BJP rival Amit Chauhan too says peo- ple with whom he inter- acted at the village wanted development. “People crave all- round development of the village,” he says. “The proposed mosque is not at all an issueinthiselection. We are contesting the polls on development plank,” the BJP candidate says. SP candidate Firoz Khan, who lives barely a km away from the mosque site, too ex- presses same views. “The proposed mosque is not a topic in the polls,” he says, add- ing development is the main issue. I am not surprised you so much like the service under Smt. Indira Gandhi. She is splendidly endowed with all the graces of a good civilized lady . She grew up under the example of her gracious father. I can never forget the moving gesture of her affec- tion when she came and received my daughter at the Delhi railway station (Mrs. Devadas Gandhi), when I took her to Delhi from Bombay after she unexpect- edly and cruelly lost her husband. Indira Gandhi whom I did not expect was at the station and led my daughter to the car like a sister. The touch was a consolation both to her and to me. How nice of you to have talked to President Kaunda about the Unit- ed World College. In your letter you say, “Sir Ian’s material arrived just in time. KK was interested in the project. As I did not wish to add to his paper work I took the liberty of telling him that you would be writing to him. He was delighted.” This is slightly ambiguous to me because I am not sure whether you left behind the material which Ian Gourlay had given you, with the President, or wheth- er you want me to send a new lot of material to the President. In any case, I imagine it is best not to worry him about this until shortly before his visit in the summer, as then I can ask for an interview to discuss it all with him. I can also discuss all this with the Prince of Wales, who really is now in charge. With best wishes to you and Hem. All the arrested indi- viduals have been sent to police custody till March 7 by a local court. The timing of the murder of the right- wing activist, who has antagonised Muslims in the region in the past with derogatory re- marks against Islam on social media, amid the ongoing protests over restrictions on wearing the hijab by Muslim girls in schools and col- leges is also under po- lice scrutiny . “There is no immedi- ate motive that has emerged from the inves- tigations into the mur- der. It seems to be part of a long rivalry be- tween Hindutva gangs and Muslim gangs in the area,” a senior po- lice official said while indicating that further investigations are on. Harsha Nagaraj alias Harsha Hindu was murdered on the night of February 20 in the Doddapet police station limits of Shivamogga after he left home to have dinner at a restau- rant with a couple of friends. A gang that was lying in wait in a car and an auto rick- shaw hacked the Ba- jrang Dal worker to death with swords when he got separated from his associates for a while. Shivamogga witnessed a brief spell of violence the next morning when Har- sha’s funeral proces- sion was taken out. The investigation so far has allegedly re- vealed that the main accused Mohammed Kashif (30), who was reportedly identified by witnesses at the crime scene and was detained a few hours after the murder, brought together the gang that was involved in the murder. K’taka: Investigation bespeaks local gang rivalries BAJRANG DAL ACTIVIST MURDER Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Par- ty is worried about Maharashtra. It seems that it has not being able to digest the joint government of Shiv Sena, NCP and Con- gress, termed the Maha Vikas Agadi (MVA) in Maharash- tra. At first the BJP tried to form the gov- ernment in some way and when it did not get success, and MVA gov- ernment was formed, thereafter, from day one, the Maharashtra BJP leaders have been giving deadlines by which, according to them, the MVA gov- ernment will fall. That is why it seems that along with the politi- cal efforts of the BJP, the efforts of some other ‘power centres’ have also intensified. First Home Minister Anil Deshmukh was arrested and now Nawab Malik has been arrested by the ED. Apart from these, the sword is hanging on about a dozen minis- ters, MLAs, MPs in- cluding Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. Three days ago, BJP leader and senior cen- tral government min- ister Narayan Rane had said that the ED’s notice is ready against four leaders of Maha- vikas Aghadi. Think, he said and in three days the ED team reached the place of a senior minister with a notice and arrested him too. The question is, how did Narayan Rane know about the preparations of the ED? Maybe his ‘extra knowledge’ of the functioning of central agencies in Mumbai region. Notably, Shiv Sena’s powerful MP Sanjay Raut had ac- cused only a few days back those central agencies are being misused against the state government! However, on one hand the central agen- cies are after the min- isters and leaders of the state and on the other hand the state government agencies are taking action against the central government ministers and BJP leaders. BMC officials have also probed the alleged il- legal construction of Narayan Rane’s bun- galow in Juhu. Sanjay Raut has said that sep- arate rooms is being prepared in the jail for four big leaders of BJP. Word is that the state’s Anti-Corruption Bu- reau (ACB), state po- lice and Brihanmum- bai Municipal Corpo- ration (BMC) officials are preparing the files of BJP leaders. The way the state agencies harassed the BJP leaders in West Bengal against the ac- tion of the central agencies, similarly preparations are being made in Maharashtra to take action. In this way, it may be the be- ginning of another un- fortunate chapter in the relationship of the Centre and the Maha- rashtra government. This statement comes at a time when the BJP has been criti- cised for its silence over AFSPA in its cam- paign and manifesto. All other leading politi- cal parties in the fray have pitched the repeal of AFSPA as a key poll promise in Manipur. “We have a sensitive border with Myanmar. So, the Centre has to be convinced before lift- ing AFSPA. The peace talks process with re- bel groups will pave the way for this. The state government will have to create the ground situation, and for the last five years, we have been working towards it,” the CM said. Speaking after inau- gurating a webinar on the Union budget an- nouncements on the health sector, Modi sug- gested that state govern- ments should also for- mulate good policies for land allotment for medi- cal education so that In- dia could produce a large number of doctors and paramedics to fulfil even global demand. His remarks assume significance at a time when a large number of Indian students, many of them studying medi- cine, have been stuck in Ukraine following the Russian attack on that country . Modi made no direct mention of the crisis though. The prime min- ister said Indian stu- dents going abroad for study, especially in medical education, also result in hundreds of billions of rupees exit- ing the country as well. They are still go- ing...Can our private sector not enter this field in a big way? Can our state governments not frame good policies for land allotment re- garding this, he asked. India can benefit a lot from its demographic dividend in this field, he said, adding Indian doctors have enhanced the country's prestige across the world in the last many decades with their work. In the webinar, Modi also highlighted his government's efforts to provide quality health as well as wellness ser- vices to people with its holistic approach to the healthcare system. 188 people from Uttarakhand stranded in Ukraine: State DGP Dehradun (PTI): Amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis, Uttara- khand DGP Ashok Ku- mar on Saturday said the police have re- ceived information that about 188 people from Uttarakhand are stranded in Ukraine. He was the Member of Parliament from Phoolpur, a seat adjoining his hometown Allahabad. But only a few know about a local Congressman, Masuria Din Pasi, who shared the Phoolpur seat with Nehru in the Lok Sabha. Being a reserved seat, the constituency elected two MPs to Parliament- one general and one Scheduled Caste. Pasi was elected to the first and second LS from Phoolpur in 1952 and 1957 along with Nehru. In 1961, the provision for dual membership in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies was scrapped by an act of Parliament after former President VV Giri lost the 1957 Lok Sabha elections from a dual-member constituency in Andhra Pradesh. Pasi then shifted to the adjoining Chail constituency and won two more elections to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and 1967. Pasi was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and the provisional Parliament. His son Shashi Prakash also won from Chail on a Janata Dal ticket in 1991. The Chail Lok Sabha seat ceased to exist after the 2008 delimitation. A new constituency was carved out of some assembly segments of Allahabad and Pratapgarh and named Kaushambi. —First India Bureau RAM TEMPLE ONLY ONE OF THE ISSUES The construction of Ram temple seems to have been relegated to one of the poll issues in Ayodhya this time as competing parties are raking up development topics and also relying on caste arithmetic for victory. The BJP, for whom the temple town sharpened its Hindutva plank, is facing a challenge particularly from the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the ongoing state polls. With 10 candidates in fray, the Ayodhya Assembly segment will go to vote in the fifth phase on February 27. After it became clear that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would not contest from Ayodhya, the party reposed faith in sitting MLA Ved Prakash Gupta, while the SP has fielded former minister Tej Narayan alias Pawan Pandey. The BSP, Congress and AAP, too, have fielded their candidates in Ayodhya, thereby making it a multi-cornered contest. “It is going to be a close contest in the Ayodhya Assembly constituency. As far as the issue of Ram temple is concerned, the BJP was not able to derive optimum mileage during this election initially. The issue started cropping up only after the third phase of the polls,” Mahant Raju Das of Hanumangarhi temple told PTI. He said while the distribution of ration to the poor has benefitted people in rural areas, a number of party leaders, on the other hand, were of the view that they will be able to garner enough votes only with Modi and Adityanath’s credentials. They did not want to mingle with the people and connect with them, he said. On whether the scene would have been different if Adityanath were to contest from Ayodhya, the mahant said, “There is no opposition to BJP, there was an opposition only towards the candidate.” —First India Bureau CONGRESS GEN SECY SLAMS POLITICS OF CASTE, RELIGION ‘UP not developed because you vote for caste, religion’: Priyanka Gandhi tells voters First India Bureau Balrampur: Congress general secretary Pri- yanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday blamed the politics of caste and religion for the dis- mal’ state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh and said the non-Congress gov- ernments for three dec- ades had done nothing except tall claims of development. The Con- gress leader also took a swipe at PM Narendra Modi saying how he could remain ignorant to the raging stray cat- tle menace faced by the farmers of the state. “UP could have pro- gressed but there are only advertisements on which the BJP is spend- ing crores of rupees. She said the Bahu- jan Samaj Party, Sama- jwadi Party and the BJP were able to form gov- ernments only by ex- ploiting the emotions of the people over caste and religion, and hence, the state did not see de- velopment. For such a state of affairs, you all are also at fault as you have made it their (lead- ers) habit that there is no need to work. You will vote by closing your eyes on emotional is- sues even if your chil- dren remain unem- ployed, Priyanka said addressing the voters. Attacking the BJP lead- ers, she said, They come here and talk about Pa- kistan, terrorism, caste and religion, but no one talks about you. Referring to the stray cattle menace, she said though she had written to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath suggesting that the Chhattisgarh model could be imple- mentedforresolvingthe issue, he did not reply . TheChhattisgarhmodel entails the government buying cow dung from the people as a result of which they are expected to take care of stray cat- tle and resolve the issue. “Last week, the PM came for campaigning and said from the dais that he did not know of the stray cattle problem which is there for five years,” she said taking a jibe at Modi. It is believed that these days Mamta Banerjee is not even happy with P r a s h a n t K i s h o r. The rift between these two has grown so big that on Abhishek Banerjee’s advice, PK has left Kolkata and is focusing on Delhi. It is said that this rift started with municipal polls in Bengal. Mamta had en- trusted this work to PK. When PK visited Bag- dogra, he met Gorkha leaders of Darjeeling there and without ask- ing Didi, he promised them that TMC would leave some seats of Silig- uri Municipal Corpora- tion for them and will not field its candidates on these seats. Mamata went furious on this. In view of Kolkata civic polls, WB’s Local Intelli- gence Unit complained Mamta that they have been asked for money in lieu of tickets. Mamata immediately cancelled list issued a new one. PK was also annoyed by this and sent an SMS to Mamta that it would be difficult for him to work in these circumstances, to which Mamata re- plied, ‘Ok’. PK’s OVERWHELMING AMBITIONS! Prashant Kishor, the country’s famous election strategist, called upon Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao recently . The meet- ing lasted for a long time that led to specula- tions that the work of TRS poll campaign was given to PK’s company ‘IPAC’. Rao replied sarcasti- c a l l y , “ O u r ship is very small, how will he (PK) fit in it? He is considering himself as PM contender in 2029.” An uneasy si- lence prevailed thereaf- ter. BIRTHDAY Happy Birthday! The birthday of IAS Arvind Singh was on Saturday, February 26. We wish him all the best! At Rumi Darwaza Archita Tiwari during the session ADVANCING MEDICAL SCIENCES CITY FIRST T he Central Medi- cine Research Institute of the CSIR in Luc- know has created a standardised drug called ‘Picroliv’ to treat Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which is about to enter the third phase of clinical test- ing. The CSIR-CDRI has been granted au- thorization to under- take clinical studies among NAFLD pa- tients in collaboration with the ICMR to de- termine the effective- ness and adverse ef- fects (if any). These clinical trials will be conducted across six hospitals in India, including AIIMS Delhi, ILBS Delhi, PGIMER Chandi- garh, KEM Mumbai, NIMS Hyderabad and KGMU Lucknow. In a remarkable feat against the NAFLD the CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow has developed the drug ‘Picroliv’ from the plant Picrorhiza kur- roa (also known as Kutki) under the Phytopharmaceutical mode of Drug Control- ler General India (DCGI). The new drug may help in the reduc- tion of fat in the liver and its subsequent complications, revers- ing severe hepatic con- ditions such as cirrho- sis and cancer.  Consequently, there is an increased need for medicinal treat- ment and this is where CDRI’s Picroliv comes into the picture. Earli- er, the tests conducted by the CDRI revealed faster recovery and a fall in bilirubin and SGPT levels. On the other hand, the cur- rent clinical trial will witness the reduction in fat content of the liver via MRI. The drug will be available after phase-III clinical trial completion for use in society . Dr Vivek Bhosale, Medical expert, CSIR- CDRI informed that it is a common condition in obese individuals or people with diabetes. Commonly there are no symptoms, however, there may be some amount of abdominal pain that may be con- centrated in the cen- tral or right upper part of the abdomen. Pa- tients also experience fatigue and tiredness and even cases of an enlarged liver.
