TEST 1
This is the Key English Test Listening Paper.
There are five parts to the test: Parts One,
Two, Three, Four and Five.
We will now stop for a moment before we
start the test. Please ask any questions now
because you mustn’t speak during the test.
Look at the instructions for Part One.
You will hear five short conversations.
You will hear each conversation twice.
There is one question for each conversation.
For questions 1 to 5, put a tick under the
right answer.
Here is an example:
Which train are they going to catch?
M Are we going to catch the fast train tomorrow?
F That’s the 10.15, isn’t it? I think that will get us
there too late. We’ll have to take the one at 9
o’clock because we need to be there by 10.45
at the latest.
M OK.
The answer is the 9 o’clock train, so there is a
tick in box A.
Now we are ready to start.
Look at question One.
One: Which photograph does the man like
most?
M I really like these photographs.
F Yes. I love the one of the flowers.
M Me too, but I think my favourite is the one of
the mountains.
F Oh, I thought you would like the sea best.
Now listen again. (Repeat)
Two: Which class is the girl going to do?
M Are you going to do your art class again this year?
F Art is on Monday, which is when the new dance
class starts, and all my friends are doing that.
M And you want to be with them. Do they do
singing as well?
F I hope not – my music teacher at school says I
can’t sing at all!
Three: What main course does the woman
choose?
F What special dishes have you got this evening?
M There’s grilled fish, grilled chicken and steak.
The steak is very good.
F Yes. I had the steak the last time I was here. I’m
having fish to start with, so I think I’ll have the
chicken for a change.
M OK.
Four: Where did the boy come in the running
race?
F Did you win the running race again?
M Jack was in front of me all the way until the last
10 metres. I just passed the finishing line about
a second before him. The person in third place
came in a long way behind.
F It was a hard race then. You must be tired.
M Yes, really tired.
Five: How long has the girl’s father been
away?
M When does your dad get back from his
business trip? He’s been away for a long time.
F Yes. It’s three weeks now. He won’t be back for
another two weeks.
M That is a long time. More than a month.
F I know, but I talk to him every day on the phone.
This is the end of Part One.
Now look at Part Two.
Listen to Jack telling his mother about his
day trip.
What did he do at each time?
For questions 6 to 10, write a letter A to H
next to each time.
You will hear the conversation twice.
F What time did you leave this morning Jack? I
didn’t hear you go.
M We caught the early train at 9 o’clock to get
there before 11 o’clock when the museum
opens. If you don’t get there then you have to
wait for ages.
F Did you stay there all morning?
M Yes. We had lunch there too. It was raining at
12 and we were very hungry so we didn’t go
for a picnic in the park, we ate in the café.
F Did you go shopping after that?
M Yes but at 2 o’clock we were tired so we went
to see a film. That finished at 3.45 so at 4
o’clock we went on the river trip.
F You did do a lot! I expect you are very hungry
now.
M Not really. At 6 o’clock we were near Park
Street so we went to see Grandma. She was
having supper so we had lots to eat with her.

Listen to a woman asking for information
about a holiday.
For questions 11 to 15, tick A, B or C.
Look at questions 11 to 15 now. You have 20
seconds.
Now listen to the conversation.
F Do you have any family holidays for next week?
M Let’s see. I have departure dates on the 18th,
the 19th is full and the 20th is no good because
it’s just for two people.
F Where are the holidays?
M France, Spain and Greece. The cheapest
holiday is in France but that is in an apartment.
If you want to go to a hotel, it will cost less to
go to The Hotel Playa in Spain.
F OK. What kind of hotel is it?
M It has three stars. It has its own beach but it
doesn’t have its own swimming pool or
children’s club, I’m afraid.
F That’s OK. How much is it per week?
M Let’s see. The normal price is two hundred and
ninety pounds per person per week, but you
can get it for two hundred and fifty pounds
each or two hundred and thirty pounds for
fourteen nights.
F Does that include all meals?
M Only breakfast and dinner, and you don’t have to
pay for transport from the airport to the hotel.
F What time is the flight?
M Departure time is two o’clock and it arrives at
five o’clock. The flight is only two hours long
but there is a one hour time difference.
F So what time...

Now look at Part Four.
You will hear a conversation about a restaurant.

F You must go to that new restaurant I went to
last night.
F Oh yes? What’s it called?
F The Garden.
F Is it a French restaurant?
F Italian. The food is really good, especially the fish.
F Is it expensive?
F It’s not cheap! We paid £120 for four people,
so that’s about £30 each.
F Yes, that is quite expensive.
F They do a cheaper menu on Monday. I think
it’s half price then.
F That’s good. Is it in the centre of town?
F Yes, it’s in Bridge Street, near the cinema. It’s
very nice inside and they have a big garden
with lots of tables outside.
F Do you have the phone number? Perhaps I will
book a table for next week. It’s Mark’s birthday
on Tuesday.

F Thanks.
This is the end of Part Four.
Now look at Part Five.
You will hear someone explaining how to
prepare a vegetable dish.
Listen and complete questions 21 to 25.
You will hear the information twice.
F Today I am going to tell you how to make a very
easy vegetable dish from Ireland. This is a dish
made with potatoes and spring onions. Now, the
Irish are famous for their love of potatoes and this
is one of their favourite dishes. It’s called champ,
that’s C H A M P. If you want to make enough for
four people you will need eight large potatoes.
Boil the potatoes for twenty minutes or until they
are soft. While the potatoes are boiling cut the
onions into very small pieces. When the potatoes
are ready peel and mash them. Add some hot
milk to the potatoes. Some people like to add
butter too, but I don’t think you need to. Put the
onions in with the potatoes. This dish should be
eaten very hot. It is very nice eaten with ham.

M Mum, these shoes are too small.
F Already? They’re only three months old. I
thought we bought a size 40 so that you would
have lots of room to grow.
M These are only a 39. The 40 was much too big.
F Well, this time we’ll get a 41 to make sure you
can wear them for longer.
Five: Where will they meet?
F The film starts at 8 so shall I meet you at the
cinema at 7.45?
M Why don’t we meet at the café near the cinema?
F I won’t have time. It’ll take me 20 minutes to
walk from the station and I can’t leave work
before 7 today.
M OK. I’ll get there early to get the tickets.
Listen to Tom telling his mother about the
sports classes he is doing.

can teach me tennis at the weekend.
F But not on Saturdays because you’ll have team
practice and matches for hockey then.

M It’s strange without my old friends and the
journey to school is longer, but the sport is really
good; they’ve even got a swimming pool.
M What are the other boys like?
M They’re nice enough but they don’t listen to
the music we like and they all like Manchester
United.
M That’s terrible. Are the teachers better?
M They’re not as boring anyway, and most of
them are young so they have new ways of
teaching. They are also easier to get on with;
you can tell them your problems.
M Mmmm. So are you doing all the same
subjects?
M I have to learn another language. I’ve decided to
do Spanish. My Dad said I should do Russian or
Chinese – but they’ll be too difficult for me...
You will hear a conversation about a holiday
job in a hotel.
M Hello. This is Seaview Hotel. Jack speaking. Can
I help you?
F Yes. My name’s Isabelle Cummings. I’m ringing
to see if you have any holiday jobs for students
this summer.
M I’m afraid all the waitress jobs have gone, but
we have some jobs for cleaners left.
F That’s OK. When do you need people to start?
M Our busy time starts on 25 July, so we’d like
new workers to start on 15 July so they can
learn the job.
F Fine. And how many hours per day is it?
M We only have part-time work in the mornings
from 8 to 12, so you’ll have your afternoons
free.
F Oh that’s good. And how much does it pay?
M Have you worked for us before?
F No.
M So you’ll get £6.00 per hour, otherwise you’d
get £6.50.
F I see. And who should I talk to if I want the job?
M The hotel manager – her name’s Mrs Pertwee;
that’s P E R T W, DOUBLE E.
F Great. Thanks very much for your help.
You will hear a tour guide in a museum
giving some information to visitors.
F I’d like to tell you all about our special summer
holiday activities for children at the Science
Museum today. This afternoon we have a special
show about fire. The children will find this very
exciting, but for younger children it may be a
little frightening so it’s only for 7 to 12 year olds.
That’s on in the main hall next to the main
entrance where you bought your tickets. The
cost for this show is £1.50 for adults and it’s free
for children. Unfortunately, because of safety
rules, children must have an adult with them.
The show lasts for one hour and starts at 2.30.
If you want to see the show you must get there
early because there is only space for fifty
children. Adults can stand at the back.
If you would like any more information about
the show, please come and ask me or any of
the other guides you see on your tour of the
museum. May I remind you that the museum
will close today at 6.30. Thank you for
listening. I hope you enjoy your visit.

weeks would be much better.
M Was it easy to travel around by bus?

M What was the best place you visited?
M I liked Milford Sound the most, but my friends
all loved Mount Cook. Lake Tekapo is really
beautiful too.

M In rooms in family houses. Hotels were too
expensive. Next time I go I’ll camp.

You will hear some information about a story
competition.
F The winner of this year’s National Story
competition for children is Fiona McGowan.
Fiona lives in Scotland with her parents, her
two brothers and her dog. Fiona is one of our
youngest winners ever, at only 13, but not the
youngest, that was in 1995 when Tom Bradwell
won aged just 12.
Fiona’s story is about a young girl who leaves
her home in Glasgow to go to live in the north
of Canada, where she has a strange adventure.
The story is called Makkovik, that’s M A double
K O V I K, which is where the story takes place.
It’s very well-written and I’m sure all young
people will enjoy it. Fiona’s story was chosen
out of one thousand stories and I’m very
pleased to give her her prize of £500. Don’t
worry if you didn’t win this time, you can have
another go in our next competition which
closes on December 31st. Good luck to you all
and well done again to Fiona.

M But his parents won’t let him. They think artists
don’t earn enough money. At least now he’ll
learn how to draw maps and pictures of rivers!
M (laughs) And I suppose he can study Art in his

F This is a good club because it’s easy to meet
people – we’re like a big family and you never
