APPLICATIONS:
1. Technical grade lithium hydroxide is a reagent to produce:
1.1. Lithium soap greases:
by reacting lithium hydroxide monohydrate with 12-hydroxystearic acid (derived from castor oil) to
make a lithium 12-hydroxystearate (lithium soap) which acts as thickener in greases formulations.
A thickening agent usually accounts for 3-20% of the grease product. As a result, around 0.2-0.3%
of the final grease product is lithium.
Strengths of lithium soap:
- good flow properties;
- good storage characteristics;
- smooth texture;
- good shear ability
- 180-200o
C (350-400F) dropping point
- good water resistance,
- low oil separation.
Lithium soaps account for a significant percentage of the grease market. They have good compatibility
with many other thickener types. Lithium soaps respond well to additives and typically have good
storage stability, water resistance, oil separation, and pumpability. Lithium soap greases are
commonly used in a wide variety of multi-purpose applications.
1.2. Lithium complex soap greases:
by reacting lithium hydroxide monohydrate with a dibasic acid and 12-hydroxystearic acid. The
resulting soap typically has a very fibrous network that provides good performance in a wide variety
of applications including higher temperature applications for which simple lithium greases are not
typically recommended.

- good compatibility with other thickener types;
- good storage stability;
- good pumpability;

Lithium complex greases are among the more popular high-temperature grease types because their
dropping points are relatively high. They tend to have good storage stability, are relatively easy to
pump, generally respond well to additives, and provide good water resistance. Lithium complex
greases are used for a wide variety of mining (mining equipment), automotive (automobiles:
gearboxes, hydraulic systems, agricultural (tractors), transport (plains, trains) and industrial
applications (assembly lines). They are compatible with many other traditional grease types.
Lithium greases represent around 70% of global grease production used in technical applications.
Lithium greases offer higher water resistance than sodium-based greases and better high-temperature
resistance than calcium-based greases.
2. Technical grade lithium hydroxide is also used as an additive to alkaline battery electrolyte
which:
- permits to double the battery working life;
- increases battery capacitance by 12-15%.
3. Dyestuffs, pigments, inks. Lithium hydroxide is used as a cation for an anionic dye to enhance
the light-fastness of the dyes. The substance also increases the brilliance of certain pigments and
serves as a fluxing agent in inorganic pigments and glazes. In inkjet technology, lithium hydroxide
prevents the development of acidic (low pH) conditions during storage, which adversely affects both
viscosity of the ink and internal components of the printer.
4. Protective coatings. In aluminum alloys for aerospace, parts of engines and car bodies used in
severe erosive environment, lithium hydroxide allows low temperature and short time sealing when
used in protective anodized coatings. Lithium sealing using a LiOH solution closes the pores of anodic
oxide film by depositing hydrated alumina and lithium aluminate double salt:

5. It is also used in in chemical synthesis of other lithium compounds, such as:
- Lithium Fluoride;
- Lithium Bromide;
- Lithium Chloride;
- Lithium Iodide Trihydrate etc.,
which are used in the field of Pharma, Agrochemicals, Refrigeration, Flavors and specialty solvents.
6. Lithium hydroxide monohydrate acts as ‘dual activation” catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation
and Gewald reaction.
