Ivana Tilca and Bruno Capuano discuss lessons learned from creating a multiplatform AI project for Azure Kinect and Hololens 2. They cover topics like face detection, object recognition, preparing and training custom machine learning models, and using the Custom Vision API to build a flag detector. They demonstrate examples using Python, Unity, and WPF with the Azure Kinect. While there is no official SDK, it is possible to access the WinRT API directly from Unity scripts with some limitations.

This presentation as made as a tutorial at NCVPRIPG (http://www.iitj.ac.in/ncvpripg/) at IIT Jodhpur on 18-Dec-2013.
Kinect is a multimedia sensor from Microsoft. It is shipped as the touch-free console for Xbox 360 video gaming platform. Kinect comprises an RGB Camera, a Depth Sensor (IR Emitter and Camera) and a Microphone Array. It produces a multi-stream video containing RGB, depth, skeleton, and audio streams.
Compared to common depth cameras (laser or Time-of-Flight), the cost of a Kinect is quite low as it uses a novel structured light diffraction and triangulation technology to estimate the depth. In addition, Kinect is equipped with special software to detect human figures and to produce its 20-joints skeletons.
Though Kinect was built for touch-free gaming, its cost effectiveness and human tracking features have proved useful in many indoor applications beyond gaming like robot navigation, surveillance, medical assistance and animation.

Using Azure, AI and IoT to find out if the person next to you is a CylonTodd Whitehead
n this demo heavy session we will see how developers can combine Azure’s custom cognitive services and IoT Edge technologies to productionise AI models to the edge on something as small as a Raspberry Pi. In the past, machine learning at the edge required powerful and expensive machines known as “heavy edge” but are limited by continuous power supplies and direct connectivity to all sensors, making deployments constrained and expensive. By leveraging the computing power of Azure and easy to use services we will see how this is now in the reach of any developer.
The session will cover:
· Training Custom Cognitive AI in Azure
· Deployment options for your shiny new AI
· Using IoT Edge to deploy AI
· Rubbing a little DevOps on it

Kinect is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game console and Windows PCs. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands.Microsoft released Kinect software development kit for Windows 7 on June 16, 2011.This SDK will allow developers to write Kinecting apps in C++/CLI, C#, or Visual Basic .NET.
Siddha Ganju, NVIDIA. Deep Learning for MobileIT Arena
Currently, Siddha is an Architect at Nvidia focusing on the Self-Driving initiative. She works towards stable and scalable training of neural networks on very large data centers, and utilizes simulation to validate the neural networks.
In 2017 Siddha led NASA’s Long-Period Comets team within their AI accelerator, called Frontier Development Lab, where she used machine learning to develop meteor detectors. Recently this project was able to provide the first-ever instrumental evidence of an outburst of 5 meteors coming from a previously known comet, called C/1907 G1 (Grigg-Mellish). As a member of the NASA FDL AI Technical Committee, Siddha is working towards incorporating AI in many space science projects!
Previously Siddha was a Deep Learning Data Scientist at Deep Vision where she worked on developing and deploying deep learning models on resource constraint edge devices. Siddha graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Master’s in Computational Data Science and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Technology from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur, India. She has also authored a book on Practical Deep Learning for Cloud, Mobile & Edge – O’Reilly Publishers
Speech Overview:
Over the last few years, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have risen in popularity, especially in the area of computer vision. Many mobile applications running on smartphones and wearable devices would potentially benefit from the new opportunities enabled by deep learning techniques. However, CNN’s are by nature computationally and memory intensive, making them challenging to deploy on a mobile device. We explain how to practically bring the power of convolutional neural networks and deep learning to memory and power-constrained devices like smartphones and web browsers.
Community Day 2013 - The Power of KinectTom Kerkhove
The power of Kinect is underestimated. It’s more than a toy used for gaming, it’s a piece of technology that can make our life easier and is evolving fast. This session will try to convince you about the power of Kinect and why developers should look into it. Next to that I’ll explain what the ‘difference’ is between Kinect and Oculus Rift & Leap Motion and why we need to brace ourselves for Kinect 2.0.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
