This document summarizes a three-week effort to estimate the number of vaquitas in the zero tolerance area, conducted from September 2 to October 27, 2019. The study indicates that while the remaining vaquitas are healthy and capable of producing calves, illegal gillnetting activities continue to pose a significant threat to the species' survival, with only a minimal number of individuals observed. The use of photographic identification was necessary due to challenges in traditional monitoring methods, and findings suggest that at least six vaquitas are likely to have survived, despite concerns over their low population numbers.
