3. Mark 9:14-18 NIV
When they came to the other disciples, they
saw a large crowd around them and the
teachers of the law arguing with them. As
soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were
overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet
him. “What are you arguing with them about?”
he asked.
4. Mark 9:14-18 NIV
A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I
brought you my son, who is possessed by a
spirit that has robbed him of
speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him
to the ground. He foams at the mouth,
gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid.
5. Mark 9:14-18 NIV
I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit,
but they could not.”
6. Mark 9:19-23 NIV
“You unbelieving generation,” Jesus
replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How
long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to
me.” So they brought him. When the spirit
saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into
a convulsion.
7. Mark 9:19-23 NIV
He fell to the ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s
father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. “It has often
thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if
you can do anything, take pity on us and help
us.”
8. Mark 9:19-23 NIV
‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is
possible for one who believes.
9. Mark 9:24-29 NIV
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do
believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to
the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You
deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command
you, come out of him and never enter him
again.”
10. Mark 9:24-29 NIV
The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently
and came out. The boy looked so much like a
corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But
Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to
his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had
gone indoors, his disciples asked him
privately,
11. Mark 9:24-29 NIV
“Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He
replied, “This kind can come out only by
prayer.
12. Matt 23:2-3 NIV
“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees
sit in Moses’ seat.3So you must be careful to
do everything they tell you. But do not do
what they do, for they do not practice what
they preach.
13. Matt 23:8-9 NIV
“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you
have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.
And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for
you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
Editor's Notes
What are you fighting for Dad?
This portion is about the authority of Christ.
Mark 9:2-7 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
Here we find a desperate father fighting a spirit too strong for him. Every Father fights, every father has to hold back the attacks of the enemy and the power of this world that would want to sneak into your family. It is not only father’s that do this but it does appear that it is part of what God has called us as father’s to do. Every father has to have the willingness and the ability to fight for their loved ones. Not fight their loved ones but fight for them. What are you fighting for; time, provision, health, protection, potential, righteousness, balance, etc?
We live in an unbelieving generation, there are many problems we face. Even the things we turn to for help can sometime fail us. How as a father I have faced challenges that I felt I couldn’t deal with and so wished someone else could solve. This father has fought for his child all his life against an enemy that wanted to destroy his life. I don’t want to be alarmist but everyone of our children face a real enemy that really wants to harm them.
This father having been failed by the 9 has only one option left, Jesus himself. “If you can help in any way” is according to Lenski the correct translation. He is fighting for his child. Jesus again draws out of this man. Jesus says off course the son of man can help, that is not an issue but do you trust the son of man. We will face things we cannot overcome but do we believe Jesus can or do we just give up. It is hard to believe Jesus can but can you keep fighting, can you be different than a generation of unbelievers.
Without hesitation the father engages in the fight, He recognizes that he comes out of a generation of unbelievers but that he wants to rise out of this unbelief and dare to believe. Every father must recognize that we are also fighting within ourselves and have to also overcome our own unbelief and temptations so that we can fight for others.
Jesus did not want to make a spectacle of the boy. When the crowed came running Jesus drove out the spirit, not once the crowd had run.
There are some enemies that are tougher than others, some you have to really knuckle down and fight, some that will fight back and resist and claw back. You must outlast them and keep believing and trusting God.
In speaking about fathers and fatherhood we must recognize that as good and necessary as fatherhood is it also has a boundary and we shouldn’t go too far with it. The Pharisees had a a habit of wanting to be called father.
