Wolfsburg / Frankfurt, September 2015 — After selling over 2.64 million of the first generation Tiguan SUV, Volkswagen is showing the newly developed European Tiguan at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. In this case, "new" means completely new, a revolution instead of an evolution. The second generation European Tiguan is the first Volkswagen Group SUV whose design is based off the forward looking MQB platform.

Accordingto Volkswagenforecasts,the A-SUV segmentwillincrease itsglobalsalesfrom8.17
milliontodaytomore than8.93 millionunitsby2018, whichrepresents9percentgrowth.The new
Tiguanis optimallytailoredforthe requirementsinthismarketsegment.Perfectlythoughtoutfrom
the firstto the last millimetre,itappealstomillionsof cardriversandtheirfamiliesasa spaciousand
flexible companionfortheireverydaybusinessandpersonal lives –anall-roundvehicleof anew era.
The firstgenerationTiguanlaunchedatthe endof 2007 and to date,more than 2.64 millionunits
have beenproduced.Eventhoughthe nextgenerationisreadytotake over,Volkswagenearnedfirst
place inSUV newvehicle registrationsinGermanyonce againin July2015 – just as itdidin the
previousmonthsandyears.The general trendof rapidgrowthinthe A-SUV segmentisreflectedpar
excellence inthismodelseries.In2014, more than500,000 Tiguanswere produced,whichwas9 per

Productoffensive–VolkswagenSUVsinall classes
For Volkswagen,the newTiguanmarksthe beginningof anSUV productoffensive.Inupcoming
years,the brand will be launchingotherinnovative SUVsthatare tailoredtospecificmarketsina
wide varietyof segmentsworldwide.Volkswagenwillbe extendingthe range of SUV vehiclesit
offers,especiallyinthe U.S.Forecastsindicate thatthe SUV share will alsoincrease significantlyin
Chinaand that additional SUV growthwill alsooccurinEurope.Unlike inEurope,driversinthe U.S.
and Chinapreferversionswithalongerwheelbase,whichisthe reasonthe new Tiguanwas

The MQB architecture improvesall aspectsof the Tiguan.The proportionsof the latestVolkswagen
SUV are evensportier,the designistrulycharismatic,andthe vehicle'sweightwasreducedbymore
than 110 poundscomparedto the previousmodel.A giganticleapforwardhasbeenmade interms
of the vehicle'sinteriorandtrunkspace:the capacityof the trunkhas increasedby1.8 cubic feet,to
18.4 cu ft,and the loadspace can be enlargedto21.8 cu ft by slidingthe rearbenchseatforward,by
up to 7.1 inches.Whenthe rearseatis folded,the cargocapacityis58.5 cu ft,a gainof 5.1 cu ft.

3. The enginesare more efficientaswell.A broadrange of eightenginesisoffered,ranginginoutput
from92 kW / 125 PS to 176 kW /240 PS.The enginesare more powerful,yettheyare upto 24 per
centmore fuel-efficientthanthe Euro5 enginesinthe previousmodel.The new 4MOTION Active
Control systemalsomakesiteasierthanevertoadapt the all-wheel drivetoall possibleconditions.
The Tiguan isnowdesignedtotowloadsupto 5512 pounds
The newTiguanhas class leadingconnectivityanddriverassistance features.The assistance systems
include standardFrontAssistwithCityEmergencyBrakingand PedestrianMonitoring,Lane Assist
and AutomaticPost-CollisionBrakingSystem.Connectivityservicesincludeautomaticaccident
notification,online trafficandparkingspace information,andavehicle statusreport,whileApp
Connectintegratesall currentsmartphone platformswiththe infotainmentsystem.
The resultisa Tiguanwhichextensivelyredefinesthe A-SUV (SportUtilityVehicle) segment.It'san
SUV that satisfiesall expectations –bothon-roadand off-road.
Safetyplus
Newfeaturesincludeapyrotechnicallyactivatedmechanism –similartoan airbag– integratedin
the hood.Thismechanismraisesthe hoodassoon as a personcomesintocontact withitin a crash.
Thisincreasesthe gapbetweenthe hardengine andthe relativelysoftbonnet andtherebyreduces
the intensityof dangerousheadinjuries.
Amongthe newTiguan'ssafetyfeatures,are the AutomaticPost-CollisionBrakingSystem, the Front
AssistambientmonitoringsystemincludingCityEmergencyBrakingand – a new feature –
PedestrianMonitoringasstandard.If the radar-basedFrontAssistof the Tiguandetectsa person
walkingontothe road,the systemwarnsthe driver.Ina secondstep,itbrakesthe car. The new
Tiguanis alsoequippedwithLane Assistasstandard.Thiscamera-basedassistancesystemwarns
and automaticallycountersteersif the driverbeginstounintentionallydepartfromthe drivinglane
withoutactivatingaturn indicator.
Exteriordesign
The new,largerdimensionsandproportionselevatethe Tiguanfromthe previousmodel.At176.6
inchesinlength,the newmodel is2.4in longer,anditswheelbase hasbeenincreasedby3in mm to
105.6 in.The newvehicle is72.4 in mmwide,whichis1.2 in more than before.Meanwhile,its
heightwasreducedby1.3 into 64.3 in on the base,front-wheel-drivemodel.The coefficientof drag
of the newTiguanwasreducedto 0.31 as well,thankstonumerousaerodynamicimprovements,

4. such as the door mirrorsthat were perfectedinwindtunnel testingandairflowsimulations:this has
resultedina40 per centreductioninoverall airdrag lossesonthe body.
The front endof the newTiguan hasa significantlywiderstance.Thisisattributabletoanactual
increase inphysical widthplusthe visualeffectof the horizontallyalignedradiatorgrille and
headlights.The Tiguanisthe firstVolkswagenSUV tobe equippedwithdual LEDheadlights.Above
the headlights,achrome striprunsacross the front of the car.
Above the radiatorgrille andthe headlights,the V-shapedhoodshootstowardthe windshield.
The vehicle'sside profileisextremelydistinctive.The waistline ishighercompared withthe previous
model,whichemphasisesthe SUV style.Thecharacterline isalsohigherandextendsoverthe entire
silhouette.The doorhandlesare seamlesslypositionedinthisline.Beneaththe upperline,a
horizontal surface followsasabreak,and thenthere isthe secondcharacter line.Designerstalkof a
"line dialogue"here.The lowerof these linesemphasizesthe flared,powerfullookingwheelarches
and the shouldersection.
In contrastto the previousmodel,the areaabove the characterline isa flatterandhas a more
elegantbandof side windows.Thisbandextendsintothe dynamicallyangledD-pillars.The lowest
sectionof the bodyis an anthracite-colouredareathatwrapsaroundthe vehicle;the same colouris
usedforthe ruggedplastictrimaroundthe wheelarches.A chrome trimstripseparatesthe body
coloursurfacesand the anthracite cladding.Thischrome accentiscontinuedatthe rear.
The lateral character line becomesadefiningrearelementabove the rearlights.The linedefines the
upperborderof the standardLED rearlightsthat have a sharp horizontal cut.Thiscut iscontinuedas
a line betweenthe rearlightsandformsa trailingedge thatisimportantaerodynamically.The
tailgate openingwasincreasedcomparedtothe previousmodel,too.The lowerpartof the tail
featuresananthracite-coloredareaandan aluminium-lookdiffuserthatisintegratedwiththe
chrome-platedtrapezoidal exhausttailpipes.
Interior
The completelyredesignedinteriorof the Tiguanhass a decidedlysportyyettypicallySUV
character. The central elementsare the instrumentcluster(available asthe digital Active Info
Display) andthe infotainmentsystemthatispositionedhighinthe centre stackandangledtoward
the driver.The dashpanel and centre console formasingle unit.The centre console itself is
dominatedbyanarray of buttonsthat are laidout aroundthe gear lever.Asonthe exterior,the
designersalsosystematicallyappliedthe "Formfollowsfunction"principleandcreate a cockpitstyle
atmosphere.The designersalsoemphasisedthe SUV nature of the interiorintheirchoice of surface
textures.

5. Thanksto cleverpackaging,seatingspace hasbeensignificantlyimprovedinthe new Tiguan,which
has 1.0 inmore interiorlength.Three passengersinthe rearseatingarea,for instance,have 1.1in
more knee room.The size of the luggage compartmenthasalsoincreased.At18.4 cubic feet,the
cargo capacity of the newmodel hasincreasedby1.8 cu ft (withfive personson-board).Inaddition,
the rear benchseatis asymmetricallysplitandadjustable longitudinally.The recliningangle of the
seatbackrestcan alsobe adjusted.The cargo areacan be enlargedto21.8 cu ft by slidingthe rear
benchseatforward(byup to 7.1 inches).Whenthe rearbenchisfolded,thisresultsinavolume of
58.5 cu ft.If necessary,the backrestof the front passengerseatcanbe foldedfullyforwardfor
stowingverylongitems.Lastbutnot least,itisnow eveneasiertoloadthe Tiguan,because the load
sill hasbeenloweredfurther.
An electronicmarvel
The newTiguanis one of the world'smostadvancedcompactSUVs, featuringanimpressive arrayof
innovations.First,there are technologieslikethe 12.3-inchActive Infodisplay(interactive,fully
digital maininstrumentswithfiveinformationprofiles) andthe head-updisplaythatisbeingoffered
for the firsttime ina VolkswagenSUV.Second,the vehicle'ssafety,convenience andconnectivity
have beentakentoa newlevel byanarray of driver assistance andinfotainmentsystems.
Eventhe base Trendline model hasanumberof advancedstandardfeatures.These include Front
AssistthatfeaturesCityEmergencyBrakingandPedestrianMonitoringaswell asthe active hood
and the Lane Assistlane departure warningsystem.Inaddition,the safetyequipmentiscompleted
by a networkof sevenairbags,includingaknee airbagonthe driver'sside,andthe AutomaticPost-

DriverAlertSystemasstandard.
The top Highline trimisalsoequippedwithadaptive cruise control (ACC),whichutilizesradarto
accelerate orbrake the Tiguanand thusalwaysmaintainthe correctdistance totrafficahead.If the
SUV isequippedwithDSGinadditiontoACC,itautomaticallyhandlesstop-and-gotrafficaswell
(trafficjamassist).OtherTiguandriverassistance systemsinclude the optional SideAssist(lane-
changingassistant),Pre-Crashproactive occupantprotection (detectselevatedcollisionpotential,

The newTiguanhas a new3-zone automaticclimate control system, calledPure AirClimatronic.The

enteringthe car – from moldsporestoallergens.
Fullyredesignedseatshave optional electricadjustment,whilethe available SmartComfortSeats

ignitionisturnedoff.Inaddition,the new ergoActive seatincludeselectric4-waylumbarsupport

Making tripslongand shortevenmore pleasant,the Tiguan hasone of the largestpanoramic
sunroofsinthe class(34.3 by 53.7 inches),whichalsofeaturesintegratedambientlighting.Other
newcomfortand convenience featuresinclude EasyOpen/EasyClose (automaticopeningorclosing

informationonavailable parkingspacesinnearbycarparks(numberof spaces and address) and
informationonfillingstations(fuel pricesandaddresses).Forthe firsttime,Volkswagenisalso
offeringSecurity&Service,whichcanbe usedto requestassistance fromthe vehicle viaacall

7. There isa total of eightEuro-6 compliantengines,all of whichhave turbocharging,directinjection,a
stop-startsystemandbatteryregenerationasstandard.The fourTSIgasoline enginesproduce 92
kW / 125 PS,110 kW / 150PS,132kW/180PS and162kW/220PS. The four TDI diesel enginesproduce
85kW/115PS,110kW/ 150 PS, 140 kW / 190 PSand 176 kW / 240 PS. The base enginesof the new
Tiguanare launchedwithfront- wheel drive,butall of the otherenginesare available withall-wheel
drive eitherasan optionoras standard.Comparedto the previousmodel withEuro-5engines,the
four-cylinderenginesinthe newTiguanare upto 24 percent more fuel-efficient.Compared to
previousTiguanswithEuro-6engines,there isupto10 percentbetterfuel efficiency.
Notonlyare the enginesmore efficient,theyare alsomore powerful.The highestpoweredTSI
engine previouslymade 150 PS inEurope,butnow hastwo 2.0-litre engineswith180 and 220 PS.
Withthe diesel engines,the mostpowerful TDIusedtomake 184 PS. Thisengine now makes190 PS,
but the top engine isthe newlyengineered240-PSunitwithtwinturboschargingand2,500 bar of
injectionpressure.With88kW / 120 PS perliterof displacement,the 2.0TDI has one of the highest
specificpoweroutputsinthe A-SUV segment.
4MOTION all-wheel drive
Volkswagenoffersthe highlyefficient4MOTION all-wheeldrive systeminthe new Tiguan,eitheras
an optionor as standard,dependingonthe chosenengine.Groundclearance of all Tiguan4MOTION
versionsis0.4 incheshigher,at7.9 inches.Inaddition,the Tiguancanbe orderedwithaspecial off-
road frontendpackage that allowsforan approach angle is25.6 instead of 18.3 degrees.The
departure angle atthe rear is 24.7 degreesforall versions,asisthe rampangle.Speciallydeveloped
for the newTiguanis4MOTION Active Control – an off-roadswitchwithfourdifferentmodes.
Regardlessof whetherthe vehiclehas anon-roador off-roadfrontenddesign,the new Tiguanis
engineeredfortowingmore than5500 pounds.
The 4MOTION all-wheeldrive systemusesafifthgenerationHaldex couplingthatactivelydistributes
torque to all fourwheelsbeforeslipoccurs.Innormal driving,onlythe frontwheelsare driven,
savingfuel.Butas soonas there isa risk of losingtraction,the rearaxle isvariablyengagedwithin
fractionsof a second.Alongwiththe Haldex coupling,the electronicdifferential locks(EDS)
integratedinthe electronicstabilitycontrol (ESC) systemactasa transverse lockforall four wheels.
The rotary/pushbuttonswitchforthe new 4MOTION Active Control islocatedonthe centre console.
The driverusesitto activate fourhigher-levelmodesand variouspopupmenus.Whenthe driver
turns the switchtothe left,one of the Onroador Snow profilescanbe activatedforon-roaddriving.
Whenthe driverpushesthe switchinone of these modes,apopupmenuappearsonthe
infotainmentsystem'stouchscreen,showingthe drivingprofile selectionwithfive profiles.Whenthe
switchisturnedto the right,the drivercan selectone of the two off-roadprofiles:Offroad

Comfortline andTiguanHighline feature asportylookwiththe 'normal'frontend.The new R-Line

The R-Line packagescan be orderedas eitheratotal package of exteriorandinteriorfeaturesoran

Plug-inhybridconcept—withasolarroof!

IAA.ThisVolkswagen,whichisbeingpresentedasaconceptvehicle,developsasystempowerof

petrol engine (1.4TSIwith 115 kW) and an electricmotor.The lithium-ionhigh-voltage battery

9. suppliesthe electricmotorwithenergy.The TiguanGTEoperateswitha 6-speeddual-clutchgearbox
(DSG) that was speciallydevelopedforhybriduse.The electricmotorwasintegratedintothe
gearbox housing.Additional componentsof the hybriddrive includethe powerelectronics(converts
DC powerfromthe batteryto AC powerforthe electricmotor) anda charger.The TiguanGTE can be
driveninthe describedE-Mode orinone of the three othermodesHybrid,BatteryCharge,orGTE.
Afterstartingthe drive system,the conceptvehicle automaticallydrivesoff in"E-Mode".Whena
minimumcharge level of the batteryhasbeenreachedorwhenthere isveryhighdemandfor
power,the drive systemautomaticallyswitchesovertothe "Hybrid"mode.Thismeansthat"E-
Mode"is deactivated,andthe TiguanGTE now behaveslike aclassicfull hybridvehicle.Itcharges
the batteryregenerativelyduringdecelerationandautomaticallyusesthe TSIand/orelectricmotor
accordingto the drivingsituation.Bypressingthe "E-Mode"button,the drivercanmanuallyswitch

GTE mode as boostfunction.The driverpressesthe GTEbuttonto switchto GTE mode,which
activatesa veryagile side of the conceptcar. ThisGTE mode isan exclusive feature of all Volkswagen
vehicleswithaplug-inhybriddrive system.The characteristicsof the acceleratorpedal,gearboxand
steeringare made noticeablymore dynamic,andthe tuningof the TSI ismore performance
oriented.Inaddition,inthe GTE mode the TSI and electricmotorworktogetherinwhatisknownas
"boosting"whichmakesthe full system powerandthe maximumsystemtorque available.The
