This document summarizes a home rehabilitation project completed by Rebuilding Together Greater Newport in 2015. The project involved renovations to the home of 65-year-old Michael Kelley, including attic insulation, ceiling and wall repairs, bathroom retiling, window and door replacements, yard cleanup, and other repairs. Over 75 volunteers from various organizations donated 662 hours of labor over multiple days. The project was funded through grants, donations, and in-kind contributions totaling over $8,000.
2. REBUILDING TOGETHER MISSION
Our Mission is to preserve and
revitalize homes and
communities, assuring that that
low-income homeowners,
particularly those who are elderly
and disabled and families with
children, live in warmth, safety,
and independence.
3. 12 WARD AVE.
Mr. Kelley is a 65 year old man who has
lived in the home for 34 years. He
served in the United States Marine
Corps from 1977 until 1983 when he was
honorably discharged. He returned
home to live with his parents as his
father had terminal cancer. When his
father died, his mother suffered a stroke
and the doctors wanted to put her into
a nursing home. Michael wanted to
keep her in her own home so he
became her caretaker. There is no
substitute for your own home, he says.
She died in 2000. He now lives alone on
an income of less than $18,500. He does
not have a car, but is able to walk to
the local library, to the grocery store
and to a church for companionship. He
is overwhelmed by the amount of work
that is needed on his home.
