ABSTRACT
Africa Mining Report (AMR qtr2 2015), posits that Africa host about 30% of global minerals
resources, and these resources have accounted for about 35% of Africa’s growth for the past
decade and a half. Africa is the second most populous continent after Asia and the fastest growing
part of the world. By 2050 Africa would be the home to 20% of the world’s population and its
workforce continues to increase and upskill. This presents an unequivocal opportunity to us as a
nation whose mineral resources industry has been once at the fore of mineral resource development
in Africa.
In Ghana our MR include gold, bauxite, manganese, potash, and diamonds to name a few. Ghana
continues to be the second largest Gold producer in Africa and until recently the 10th in the world.
Gold contributes about 90% of our mineral resources contribution to GDP. Thus Gold production
may be used as an index in our discussion to link to the opportunities presented above. Given this
scenario what is the opportune role that we can play to position our industry in readiness for the
future? I would like this discussion to 1) understand the mining industry around gold 2) to look at the
AMN’s objectives, and 3) to attempt to make recommendation to shape and sharpen policy in
readiness for take-off.

Peter Amponsah–Mensah
The CEO of Pamicor Mr. Peter Amponsah-Mensah is a Mining Executive with some 30 years of
experience in the Ghanaian gold mining industry. He is a “hands on” mining engineer who rose from
the production face through the ranks to the executive level. He developed his technical,
operational and managerial skill at Ashanti Goldfields where he was Group Manager - Strategic
Planning and New Business Development at the Corporate Office. He was also the General
Manager for the Bibiani Mine at one time. He was Project Manager – MRM at AnglogoldAshnati after
the merger and later Mining Manager at Chirano Mines.
He is currently a Director and Owner of Pamicor limited, a wholly owned Ghanaian drilling company.
He serves as Board Chairman of Water Research Institute –CSIR, Board member of Asanko Gold,
and member of the Board of Governors of his alma mata. He was educated at Aggrey Memorial
School, Cape Coast, the University of Science and Technology – School of Mines (now uMAT) and
holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is married with three daughters
and is rich with a wealth of requisite professional wisdom to deliver a keynote address to the Accra
Mining Network.
