  7. 7. 5th West & Central Africa | Mining Summit 2012 WELCOME MESSAGE The Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) which was established in 1973 to encourage geoscientific collaboration and cooperation across the continent has signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Government in June 2012 and is accredited as an International NGO with its permanent office in Addis Ababa. Its main objectives are:1) to promote understanding of the earth sciences and improve standards of earth science education and research in Africa; 2) to provide a forum for discussion and dissemination of informationacross national boundaries between scientists, associations and institutions engagedin African geology and earth resources; 3) to promote the development and sustainablemanagement of the continent’s earth resources, to advance its socio-economicdevelopment; and 4) to improve natural hazards assessment and disaster mitigation.In order to achieve its objectives, it has an active website, monthly online newsletter,organizes bi-annual colloquium of African Geology, supports national and continentalgeological meetings, conferences in the continent.We started to be a supporting partner to the West & Central Africa Mining Summitwhich is being organized in Accra Ghana starting in 2011.
