My work background has produced many valuableexperiences that I feel qualify me for this position.I
have taught children attwo preschools (gainingexperiencein lesson planning,education,and patience), been
an assistantmanager at three movie theaters (gainingexperience in management and training),worked in the
customer servicedepartments of two largecompanies,and have held two payingpositions which utilized my
writingand editingskills.No matter what job duties I have performed, I feel that the main focus in all of them
has been delivering quality customer serviceto both external and internal customers.
When I started as the Teen Services Coordinator at the LouisvillePublicLibrary,itwas a new position
created to staff the teen spacein a brand new, beautiful library. I was given a great deal of freedom to create
and implement my own programs and ideas.Because of the closeproximity to the LouisvilleMiddleSchool and
the 1600 squarefoot space,The Loft, demand and interest were very high when we opened.
One of the firstthings I did was to create a teen advisory group,which I used to gather information
about the kind of programs they would liketo see offered. This firstcore group of teens remained loyal and
dedicated library users from6th through the 12th grade. Many returned to visiton breaks from collegeor their
world travels to affirmhow important their library experiences had been to their future endeavors.
I was ableto offer a variety of programs for a wide spectrum of interests. We had a monthly program
on Friday nights that alternated between game and movie nights. The responsewas incredible! In addition to
weekly teen activities,I developed special programmingfor events such as Teen Read Week, Teen Tech Week
and the Teen Summer Reading Programs.Some of the most successful ongoingprograms I created were an
Anime Club, ReadingRendezvous (an open book discussion),and a writinggroup (that lastNovember
participated in NaNoWriMo).Other successful programs throughoutthe years included a Young Chautauqua
group (cosponsored by Colorado Humanities),a Dungeons & Dragons gaming group, a Steampunk Maker’s
Faire,a Doctor Who craftday, and the always popular Duct-Tape-O –Rama. For the entirety of my time at
Louisville,I also served as a staff liaison to the City’s Youth Advisory Board.
I take great pride in my customer serviceskillsand my collection development abilities.I havebeen
told that my reader’s advisory knowledge concerningYA Literature is excellent,both by excited new readers
and their grateful parents. Most importantly,I take pridein the relationshipsand trustI established with my
teen patrons.I firmly believe that this should be one of the primary goals of teen services librarians,as wemay
well be the lasttrusted and neutral adultcontact they make before launchinginto the adultworld. THESE are
the patrons who aresoon goingto be voters, parents and perhaps even our employers. Those are justsome of
the reasons why we need to reach out to this age group and create lifelonglibrary users.
