5. COACHING PHILOSOPHY OF MARK GOODMAN
My coaching/managing philosophy is based on the teachings of several managers I have had the great pleasure to have played for and/or coached with:
Tim Johnson (Toronto Blue Jays)
“Dirty” Al Gallagher (San Francisco Giants)
Doc Edwards (New York Yankees)
And most recently,
Duffy Dyer (1968 World Series Champion, New York Mets)
During the past seven-plus years, I have studied the managerial strengths of these notable man- agers and blended these strengths into my personal, and always evolving, coaching style.
My coaching philosophy involves working hard daily and dedication to the team concept, while also understanding that each player is an individual who needs individual attention. I work to see that each player progresses on his own path, learning and growing into the best player and person he can be. This is extremely important because understanding each player leads to a total team effort on the field, win or lose. We do it together.
My ultimate goal is to support my players in their academic achievements and to help them translate the lessons learned on the field into strategies for life beyond baseball. I want all my players to do their best in the classroom and on the field. This will translate to success later in life.
My job will always involve learning the skills and challenges of each player, and then devising methods to help them improve. Managing isn’t “one-size-fits-all.” It takes constant evaluation, review and flexibility to identify the best player for each position and to make sure I put the best team on the field.
Baseball is like life, in that you manage failure and you manage success. I never lose sight of the fact that baseball is just a game, and success can’t always be measured or defined by the score.
If, at the end of the season, I have managed or influenced 25-30 young men to each play to the best of their abilities and to their full potential, then I will know that, as a team, we will have won far more than just baseball games.
