This document discusses the development of a model for holistic healing environments. It begins by defining a healing environment and the goals of reducing stress for patients, creating an efficient work environment for staff, and a welcoming space for visitors. It then describes building the model through a literature review and case study research involving patient and staff interviews and observations. The research identified seven key dimensions for healing environments: safety and security, social support, normalized behavior, normalized environment, distraction and engagement, basic physiological needs, and agency and control. An eighth dimension was later added for staff needs. The model has since been adapted for various healthcare facility types and to general real estate. Checklists and evaluations were created to apply the holistic healing environments model.
