- The Pickhurst Lodge Pre-School located at Hayes Free Church is closing after 66 years due to declining enrollment numbers. It can no longer financially sustain operating with only 12 children enrolled.
- In its heyday, the pre-school had 66 children attending each morning session. However, changing family dynamics with more mothers working and demand for full-day childcare have reduced enrollment over the years.
- The pre-school will close its doors for the last time at the end of the term on March 24, 2017. It has been a charitable organization of the church for over six decades providing early education to many children in the community.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
By the time our next magazine appears, the
Olympics will be over, and the Paralympics
just begun. In 1 Corinthians 9: 24 we are told,
“Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only
one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.”
In the Olympics / Paralympics there are medals for the first
three places. Winning is determined by skill, fitness, power,
endurance, tactical ability and mental focus – the same factors
account for success in sport for able-bodied and disabled
athletes. The self-respect that each athlete gains from
qualifying for the Olympics / Paralympics is enormous, but no-
one qualifies for the games on their own – behind each athlete is
a coach, a sponsor, a medical team, a family… For each athlete,
much has been given and given up… and it all rides on the final
outcome. As I have heard one past Olympian say this week, no
one remembers who came fourth.
In our race, the one we run for our Lord, we too must have
endurance and tactical abilities; we must be focused on our goals.
We run the race to spread the Word of God and to fight against
injustice in the world in whatever way we can. And we do not do
this alone, we run in company with all our fellow Christians here
and all over the world.
As we look forward to celebrating with athletes from all corners
of the world their sporting achievements, let us remember that
we too have a goal to achieve.
Our prize is the gold of heaven.
Sue

T he Flower Festival was wonderful and the arrangements inspired!
What a lot of talent we have in our church and among those around us
in Hayes; I thank everyone who made it such a wonderful occasion.
Many people travelled quite a distance to come and see the displays, and
many came from our community to wonder at the beauty of God’s
creation and the talent that displayed it so well.
I am looking forward to the continuation of our celebrations with the
films on Saturday 7th July; many of you may remember I’m quite a fan
of the seven dwarfs! I’m also looking forward to the Scalextric racing!
With many thanks to all those involved who have and who are working so
hard!
Sue
A mother was teaching her 3 year old daughter the Lord's prayer.
For several evenings at bedtime she repeated it after her mother.
One night she said she was ready to solo. The mother listened with
pride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end
"Lead us not into temptation" she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail,
Amen".

11. Christian Aid Walk 2012
May 20th saw Mike and I boarding the train at Hayes to do stewarding
for the Christian Aid walk “Circle the City”. This year we were at St.
Olave’s church, Hart Street. This church is dedicated to the saint and
also to King Olave of Norway who helped defend London in 1014 by
pulling away its bridge - hence the rhyme “London Bridge is falling
down”. St. Olave’s is a rare example of the mediæval churches that
existed before the Great Fire of London in 1666.
The church was severely damaged in the bombing of World War II, but
was lovingly restored in the 1950s. The tiny graveyard is said to
contain some killed by the Great Plague in 1665. Samuel Pepys is also
buried here.
We signed many forms throughout the day. One of the first people to
come through the door, with his dog, was John Keys who has
preached a number of times at HFC.
Mike and I really enjoyed the day spent at St. Olave’s, meeting lots of
folks, some from different places.
The taxi driver who took us to the church in the morning didn’t charge
us, but said to give the fare to Christian Aid. That kind gesture was a
good start to the day.

Drones
The Baptist, Methodist and URC report "Drones - Ethical Dilemmas in
the Application of Military Force" is now available on line. This report
has been well received by our churches central committees and will
be the subject of debate at the Methodist Conference and URC
General Assembly in July.
Drones are perceived by NATO partners to offer a key role in NATO
counter-insurgency strategy. Less well discussed or understood is the
nature of UK involvement in the targeted killing of known (or
suspected) insurgents with RAF drones in Afghanistan. The media are
increasingly interested in drones. Demonstrations around drone
factories in the UK have attracted significant support for people from
our churches. On 11 May, around 50 people gathered outside the
Shenstone factory near Lichfield.
The Drone Campaign Network plans a Week of Action in October -

14. London Marathon 2012
Jenny Carr's son, Phillip, completed the London Marathon in April,
running for Tommy's, the baby charity, and completing the race in
5:47:57.
Jenny and Phillip would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone
who sponsored him in support of Tommy's. The total amount raised,
including gift aid, was £4,300, which will be used by Tommy's to
further medical research and run information campaigns. Such a sum
will make a huge difference to help Tommy's in their goal of reducing
the incidence of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth.
The Marathon was an amazing experience and the support from the
crowds was incredible.
Thank you again for your support.
Buses - You can wait for ages & then three come along all at once!
W hen standing at a bus stop wondering when the next bus will
arrive (not all bus stops have the information) you can find out!
Each bus stop has a unique bus stop code on a plate which has been
placed above the timetable.
You text that code from your mobile to 87287 and TfL will send you a
message with the arrival times of the next buses at your stop.
Then you can decide if it's worth standing and waiting!
Sue
What I have done is to store the code for each of my two closest bus
stops in my mobile telephone. So, before I leave home, I text the
appropriate code to the number 87287 (stored under the name of
buses). This means we can time when we leave the house for the bus

Would you Adam & Eve it?
When Adam stayed out very late for a few nights, Eve became upset.
'You're running around with other women,' she charged.
'You're being unreasonable,' Adam responded. 'You're the only
woman on earth.'
The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by
someone poking him in the chest. It was Eve.
'What do you think you're doing?' Adam demanded.
"Counting your ribs," said Eve.

15. Why we exist
The churches in the UK
have a once in a lifetime
opportunity thanks to the
2012 Games being awarded to London.
Our mission Put simply, the reason we exist is to enable the UK churches to
engage with the 2012 Games
Our vision When the dust has finally settled we hope to have fulfilled our
dream for the 2012 Games to have enabled thousands of churches
to taste the excitement of reaching their community in fresh and
ongoing ways in Jesus’ name
We are doing it by: -
· Helping people catch the vision
· Making connections between the many agencies and thousands of
churches that can make it happen
· Coordinating the production of the resources and action needed
Serving our land All too often the churches are seen negatively. As out of
touch; interested in themselves. The 2012 Games provides a unique
opportunity for UK churches to be seen for what they really are.
By playing their part in the programmes of outreach, hospitality and
service every church can help and waken fresh interest in who it is
that makes us different and how they can know him for themselves.
More Than Gold and the Olympic organisers More Than Gold programmes
have no official relationship with LOCOG, the organising committee
of the Games. Our Athlete Family Homestay programme has their
Inspire mark – but this is the extent of any official endorsement.
Prayer
Our conviction is that prayer and mission go hand in hand as churches
respond to the Games.
That’s why we are inviting every church, group and organisation to
explore creative ways to pray for all that will happen before, during
and after the Games.
We are using the theme A Time To Shine, drawn from Isaiah 60:1-5. This
tells of God's light shining through us for the good of others.

16. O n the 21st of June, the Times covered the visits of two
internationally renowned figureheads; Aung San Suu Kyi,
and the Dalai Lama.
Aung San Suu Kyi has collected her Nobel Peace Award, and she was
well received at Oxford University, where she received her honorary
doctorate, 19 years after it was awarded. The Headline was “You
moved our world, says Oxford”.
Then the headline: “Dalai Lama snubbed as China ‘nobbles’ Scotland.”
The Dalai Lama had attended an inter-denominational service of prayer
and reflection at Westminster Abbey. Yet there are hints that some
Scottish leaders and authorities are refusing to meet him, so as not to
enrage the Chinese Government.
Now what would happen if both of these leaders were to meet up here
in the UK.
Women’s Contact Coffee Morning 10.00 am - 12.00
Our next coffee mornings will be on the 7th of July, and the
11th of August. We continue to raise monies to contribute

We hope to see you there, and why not bring a friend.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We will be holding a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd
and 4th Sunday of each month. So, in July the stall will be held on the
8th and 22nd, and in August on the 12th and 26th.
Traidcraft has reported that, in these times of economic problems,
sales are down from the previous year. However, vital projects and
the support of producers in deprived communities are continuing.
The message is please buy Fairtrade, the work is more vital than before .
Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.

17. Some Verse
The version found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for
children in Calcutta:
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centred.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some
genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.
-this version is credited to Mother Teresa.
Tax Justice Tour Bus
This autumn, Church Action on Poverty
(http://www.church-poverty.org.uk/)
is joining forces with Christian Aid to take the campaign for Fair Taxes
on the road, with a seven-week Tax Justice Bus Tour.
Our bright red London bus will be touring the length and breadth of
Britain and Ireland, to promote the simple message: It's time for Fair
Taxes for the poorest communities at home and globally.
In an age of austerity and spending cuts, tax avoidance is morally
unacceptable: tax dodging costs lives. It effectively amounts to
robbing the poor - in the UK and in poor countries - of the money that
should be spent on education, health and welfare.
The Bus Tour is a great opportunity to build support for Fair Taxes via the
local and regional media, with local and national politicians, church
leaders, campaigners and supporters in the churches and other
sympathetic audiences (e.g. trade unions).

The Church's 75th Anniversary Celebrations
Make a note in your diaries and invite your Family, Friends and
Neighbours to one of the events being organised which is on
Saturday 7th July 2012 and will take the form of two film shows.
1) In the year 1937 the Children's film Snow White was made and we
plan to show the modern colour version in the Church on the
large screens at 2 o'clock for families followed by a tea.
2) In the evening at 7.30pm we will be showing for adults The
Prisoner of Zenda, which was also made in 1937.
These events are not planned to make a profit but to reserve a seat a
charge of £1 per person will be made.
Do come and join in the fun for the day.

24. Final Thought
Poem
Give me a good digestion, Lord
and also something to digest
Give me a healthy body, Lord
With sense to keep it at its best.
Give me a healthy mind, good Lord
to keep the pure and good in sight;
which seeing sin is not appalled,
but finds a way to set it right.
Give me a mind that is not bound,
that does not whimper, whine or sigh.
Don't let me worry overmuch
about this fussy thing called, ‘I’.
Give me a sense of humour, Lord;
give me the grace to see a joke,
to get some happiness from life
and pass it on to other folk.
Thomas H. B. Webb
