According to a 2012 survey by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, slightly over half of Americans aged 12 or older reported being current drinkers of alcohol, with nearly a quarter engaging in binge drinking in the past 30 days. Heavy drinking, defined as binge drinking on 5 or more days in the past month, affected 6.5% of the population. Young adults aged 18-25 had the highest rates of binge and heavy drinking. While rates of underage drinking and driving under the influence have declined in recent years, alcohol use remains prevalent and accessible to minors through social networks and lax enforcement of age restrictions.
