Sheena's Place is a non-profit organization that provides support groups and services free of charge to individuals affected by eating disorders. In 2011, they helped over 969 people through 83 support groups and other services. Their annual report highlights that 46% of clients are aged 20-29, showing the need for their young adult support group. It also discusses the success of their new strategic plan and two-year Expressive Arts campaign. Client surveys show high satisfaction with the support and sense of community provided at Sheena's Place. The organization relies on donations and fundraising to continue their programs.

When I joined the Board in 2005, I never imagined that a
year later I would become the Chair. Since 2006, I have been
honoured to lead our dedicated, energetic board; one that has
evolved into a strong business-minded working group committed
to raising the critical funds required for our programs and

6. Friday Mornings
The Friday Morning Adult Support Group has been running since we opened our doors in 1996.
Many people have come and gone through the years. Here are two personal stories.
My First Time
Coming and just getting to Sheena’s Place was
very difficult but there was nothing left to do
and nowhere else to go. Opening the door and
entering, I felt very anxious, ashamed, scared and
uncomfortable. The staff made me feel normal,
not like a person with an eating disorder. Being
in a group session with strangers was uncomfortable
because this is such a private battle. After the first
time, I felt really drained because facing this monster
is an intense, life changing thing. I was glad the first
session was over but at the same time I wanted to
run away and never go back. Going back the second
time was even harder but I forced myself to go.

As a teaching organization, Sheena’s Place offers the invaluable services offered at Sheena’s Place. I am

opportunities that assisted in broadening my skills
for a career in social work. During my time here,
I co-facilitated two support groups, worked at the
front desk answering phones and helping people,
conducted interviews for those seeking more
information about groups, and participated in a
number of special events and health education fairs.
These valuable experiences helped to further my
understanding of how eating disorders impact not
only individuals, but their families, and even
communities. I saw first hand the tremendous effort
it takes to ensure that those in need are able to access Danielle at our front desk
