Head Coaches

5. With his long and illustrious
lacrosse career which has spanned
four decades, Air Force lacrosse
head coach Fred Acee has a resume
that rivals that of any coach in col-
legiate lacrosse.
Acee took the helm of
the Falcon lacrosse pro-
gram in the fall of 1997
with a great under-
standing of the history
of the program. His
goals then and now are
the same — to turn the
Falcon lacrosse team
into a NCAA playoff
contender.
Last season, the
Falcons put together a
4-8 record, including
victories over Butler
and Fairfield of the
Great Western Lacrosse
League. The Falcons
also notched one of the
best wins in team histo-
ry, opening the season
with their first ever win
over defending national
champion Virginia. It
was the first win in
school history over a
top-ranked opponent.
If vast experience is
any indication of the
tools needed to build
future success, Acee's
exceptional knowledge
of lacrosse and exten-
sive coaching back-
ground ensure that the
Falcons will have solid
guidance in the years
ahead.
For 30 years, Acee
made a name for him-
self as head coach at
Farmingdale, a two-
year college on Long
Island. While there, he
built the Rams into a
national lacrosse pow-
erhouse, capturing
National Junior College
Athletic Association
championships in
1977, 1981 and
1987. In his three
decades at the helm,
the Rams advanced
to the NJCAA Final
Four an amazing 25
times. His overall
record of 312-119-1
(.723 winning per-
centage) is testa-
ment to his coach-
ing skills.
Although SUNY
Farmingdale may
have been a small
school, Acee's abili-
ties were not hidden
from the rest of the
lacrosse world. He
is highly respected
by his peers, as evi-
denced by the
numerous honors
he has received. He
was inducted into
the Long Island
Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1994, Acee was the
defensive coach for the world champion United States lacrosse team,
assisting then-Johns Hopkins head coach, Tony Seaman. Most
recently, Acee was chosen as a 2005 inductee into the Junior College
Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Acee also served on the executive board for the 1998 USA World
Team and is the organizer of the United States Lacrosse Coaches
Association convention.
He has also served on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association Rules Advisory Committee and is a past president of the
NJCAA Lacrosse Coaches' Association.
In the summer of 2001, Acee was honored for his lifelong contri-
butions to the game of lacrosse. He received the Howdy Meyers Man
of the Year award at the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's
annual banquet in Albany, N.Y.
Lacrosse hasn't been his only game in the last 30-plus years. At
SUNY, he also coached the soccer team from 1967-72 and coached
soccer, track, basketball and baseball at Leonardsville High School.
He lettered in both football (quarterback) and lacrosse (midfield) at
his alma mater, SUNY Cortland.
A New York native, Acee played football, basketball and baseball
at Clinton Central in Clinton, N.Y. He graduated from Cortland State
with a degree in physical education in 1963, and received his master's
in physical education from Ithaca College in 1967.
Acee has one son, Michael, who played lacrosse at North Carolina,
and daughters, Paulette Pearson and Dr. Andreana Hodgini, as well
as three grandchildren — Sarah and Mike Hodgini and Paige
Pearson.

Maj. Rob
Koehler
Assistant Coach
Maj. Rob Koehler is in his fifth year
coaching at the Air Force Academy.
Koehler is a graduate of the United
States Military Academy where he
earned his bachelor's degree in 1985.
In 1984, Koehler won the General George Ruhlen Award, which
is awarded annually to Army's player who shows the most
improvement in his game during the season. In 1985, he won the
General James V. Hartinger Award, which is given annually to the
Army lacrosse most valuable player. He also earned honorable
mention All-American status in 1985 at the goalie position.
After graduation, Koehler was commissioned as a 2nd
Lieutenant in Field Artillery. His first permanent assignment was at
Fort Carson (Colo.), where he spent four years as a fire support
officer and a fire direction officer. After Fort Carson, he spent nine
months at the Army's Defense Language Institute in Monterey,
Calif., where he studied German. He also graduated from Ranger
school at Fort Benning, Ga., before spending two years in
Baumholder, Germany, where he commanded an artillery battery
of over 125 soldiers.
After returning from Germany, Koehler earned his master’s
degree in kinesiology at Indiana University and then returned to
West Point to teach in the physical education department. While at
West Point, he also served as the volunteer assistant lacrosse coach
for three years. In 2003, he was nominated for the National
Assistant Coach of the Year award.
Before coming to the Academy, Koehler was stationed at Fort
Hood (Texas) for two years. He served in the 1st Cavalry Division
where he deployed to Bosnia for six months and Kuwait for a
month.
The Long Island native has completed the Leadville 100, a gru-
eling 100-mile mountain trail run. He and his wife, Chris, are the
parents of two boys, Alex and Kevin. They reside in Colorado
Springs.
Eric
Seremet
Assistant Coach
Eric Seremet enters his fourth sea-
son as an assistant lacrosse coach at
the Academy. On the field, he works
primarily with the offense, while off the
field he assists in recruiting and scout-
ing.
Seremet, a native of Syracuse, N.Y., and 1988 graduate of
West Genesee High School, worked for one season at Cornell,
helping the team maintain a top-20 ranking throughout the 2001
season. Before Cornell, Seremet was the top assistant for four
years at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He also
was a graduate assistant coach at Dartmouth College for one sea-
son.
At Stony Brook, Seremet was heavily involved in the recruit-
ing process, but his main successes came on the field. He had his
hand in all aspects of the program, having coached both ends of
the field. In 1998, he coached the top goaltender in Division I in
save percentage, while the defense ranked third in goals against.
Seremet attended the University of North Carolina, where he
was a four-year letterwinner for the lacrosse team. He was a starter
on North Carolina's 1991 Division I national championship team
and member of four ACC championship teams from 1989-92. He
graduated in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in industrial relations.
Seremet is a former member of the National Lacrosse
League’s Colorado Mammoth, spending eight years as a player in
the league. His pro career began in 1993 with the Boston Blazers.
He also played for the New York Saints from 1995-1999 and the
Syracuse Smash from 1999-2000. He has also played on various
club lacrosse teams for the past decade, has run seven marathons
and completed the Leadville 100, a grueling 100-mile mountain
trail run with fellow coach Maj. Rob Koehler.

“Replacing these graduated
seniors will be a challenge for our
team, but with our returning class
of seniors and the combined expe-
rience of our junior and sophomore
classes, this should be a competi-
tive year on the field," said Acee.
ATTACKMEN
Although young, the Falcon
attack will be very competitive.
Leading scorer Will Meister, who
tallied 11 goals and 14 assists in
2004, will lead the attack. “Meister
is a great field general. He will lead
our offense,” said Acee.
Michael Weber, Kevin
Krieger, Max Miller and Conrad
Lochocki will all compete for a
starting spot at attack. Krieger and
Weber are big, strong attackers,
while Miller and Lochocki are hard-
shooting lefties. Freshmen Kevin
Crumrine and David Rose will also
compete for a spot on the field.
Acee is very excited about the prospects at the attack posi-
tion. “I feel we should improve on our seven goals per game
average of 2004. This is potentially the most talented group of
attackmen we've ever had at the Academy.”
MIDFIELDERS
Senior co-captain D.J. Benzing, who finished the 2004
season with 10 goals, 15 assists and 32 ground balls, will lead
the midfielders. Benzing has been a starter for all four years at
the Air Force Academy. He is an outstanding offensive and
Although the 2005 Air
Force lacrosse team returns
only five seniors, all are hard-
ened veterans and the Falcons
are quietly confident and
looking forward to a very suc-
cessful 2005 season. This con-
fidence is borne from a num-
ber of factors from 2004,
including the team’s victory
over top-ranked Virginia, five
one-goal loses and three
weeks ranked among the
nation’s top 20.
“Our players have worked
very hard in the off-season
and are eagerly awaiting the
challenge of a top Division I
schedule this season,” said
head coach Fred Acee. “They
know what it takes to win.
They have set lofty goals and
are doing what is necessary to
achieve those goals.”
The 2005 schedule
includes seven teams ranked in the preseason top-25 coaches
poll, while the Falcons themselves received 12 votes in the
poll. Among the ranked teams the Falcons will face are North
Carolina, Towson State, archrival Army, Pennsylvania and fel-
low Great Western Lacrosse League opponents Notre Dame,
Ohio State and Denver University. Air Force will open the sea-
son at Virginia Military Institute on Feb. 27, followed by the
Denver Pioneers Face-off Classic March 5-6 where the Falcons
will take on Towson State and Lafayette. Ivy League power-
house Pennsylvania will visit the Air Force Academy on March
10 for a non-league encounter. The Falcons will then travel to
Army, who have beaten the Falcons in overtime for the past
two years. The Falcons will also face tough non-league oppo-
nent St. John's in Jamaica, N.Y.
The first order of business for the Falcons’ coaching staff
in 2005 will be to replace graduating defensemen Chris
Palmer, Zack Lehman, Andy Sunderland and Jeff Moss. All
were cornerstones of a very strong defense that allowed just
over eight goals per game. “It is vital to the success of our
team that our defenders step up and fill the void that was left
by the graduation of the defense,” said Acee.
Four-year starting attackman Greg Dangler, as well as Bill
Kelleher and Dave Brown, will be tough to replace as will MVP
midfielder Mike Colosimo, Tim Lorden and face-off specialist
Greg Kantz. Coach Acee feels the toughest midfielders to
replace will be defensive specialists Ray Wilson and Monte
Caplan, who he characterizes as “very fast, athletic and
tough.”
Top scorers return for Air Force in 2005, along with
pre-season All-Americans Tim Hade and Justin Pavoni

defensive midfielder. “D.J. is a quiet leader who will take
charge on both ends of the field," said Acee.
Meanwhile, senior midfielders Michael Kennedy and Jeffrey
Jablonski will need to have breakout seasons to help the
Falcons have a successful season.
Returnees Paul Adams, John Smith, Justin Kuchta, Kevin
Winslow, Kyle O' Neill, Billy Sullivan and Brad DelloIacono
will compete for starting positions. Kuchta was the leading goal
scorer at midfield in 2004 and will again be a force at that posi-
tion. Adams has great speed and can play both ends of the
field. Smith is a strong midfielder and is, according to Acee,
“our best face-off guy.” O'Neill and Winslow will also compete
for the face-off spot, while Sullivan and DelloIacono will com-
pete for the defensive midfield positions.
Newcomer Christopher Tubesing will face off and will be
a force on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field.
He leads a group of freshmen who are expected to compete
for playing time. Jack Parchman, Peter Krasco and Lukas
Fisher had very good fall practices and will add depth at the
midfield position. Walk-ons Reilly Smith and Aaron Baney will
also compete for playing time.
DEFENDERS
The strength of the team will again be a talented and
tough defense, led by seniors Jared Brush and co-captain Tim
Hade. Hade earned all-conference honors in 2004 and Brush
has been a starter for four seasons at both close defense and
long stick midfield. Hade, who was chosen as a pre-season All-
America, will anchor the long-stick midfield position.
Jordan Kemp will have a breakout year at close defense.
Acee feels that Kemp and Brush are as good as any at their
position. The third spot will be a dog fight between Daniel
Breiding, Patrick Mitchell and Michael Cotham. All had very
good fall practices and have worked hard in the off season.
Kyle Rutherford and Ryan Stillwell will compete for playing
time, while Jonathan Appleby and Spencer Reed will add
needed depth to the defense.
The long stick midfield positions will be manned by Hade
and Steven Kessler with support from freshmen Pike Howard
and Eric Olsen.
GOALKEEPERS
The goalkeeper position is anchored by pre-season All-
America selection Justin Pavoni. Pavoni was an All-Great
Western Lacrosse League honoree in 2004. He finished the
season with a .637 save percentage, ranking him third overall
in the NCAA. Acee believes Pavoni is the consummate goal-
tender: “He is great in the goal, and great out of the goal. J.J.
is possibly our best athlete.”
Pavoni will be adequately backed up by sophomore
Daniel Bellissimo, who Acee is convinced has all the tools to
be a great Division I goalie. Walk-on Clayton Cruickshank pro-
vides needed depth at this position.
In short, the Falcons believe that this year they have all the
right pieces in place for the program to turn a corner. By
improving upon the strides that were made last season, the lat-
est edition of the Air Force lacrosse team can make 2005 a
season to remember.

2004 Review
It was a season of ups and downs for the 2004 Air Force men's
lacrosse team. The Falcons notched one of the biggest wins in the
program's history and clawed their way into the national rankings.
Unfortunately, the team suffered five single-goal losses, including two
in overtime. Although Air Force finished the season with a disap-
pointing 4-8 record, it remained a memorable year.
The Falcons opened the season with arguably the greatest victo-
ry in Academy history, defeating Virginia, the defending national
champion. Air Force defeated the top-ranked Cavaliers, 7-6, in the
opening game of the Pioneer Face-Off Classic in Denver, Colo.
Air Force trailed 3-1 at halftime against Virginia, but scored six of
the next seven goals to take a 7-4 lead. It then relied on the superb
play of sophomore goalkeeper Justin Pavoni and the Falcon defense
to maintain the lead. Pavoni, making his first career start, notched 16
saves in the win.
For the first time in seven years under head coach Fred Acee, the
Air Force lacrosse team opened the season with consecutive victories,
defeating Vermont, 8-4, in the second game of the Pioneer Classic.
The Falcons trailed early in the game, but rallied to take a first-half
lead and never looked back. William Keleher notched his first career
hat trick with three goals scored, while Greg Dangler had a pair of
goals.
Freshman Will Meister, who had two assists in the game, was
selected to the all-tournament team. Defenseman Stephen
Whittenberg, longstickman Tim Hade and Pavoni also earned all-
tournament team honors.
The two season-opening victories propelled the Falcons into the
top 20 for the first time in Acee's seven seasons. Unfortunately, the
momentum died when the team suffered a disappointing 11-10 over-
time loss on the road to Army. The Falcons held a two-goal advan-
tage with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Black
Knights would score twice late, including a game-tying goal with just
36 seconds remaining. Army scored the game winner 1:48 into sud-
den death overtime. Freshman Justin Kuchta tallied four goals in the
loss.
The Falcons then returned home to face No. 9 North Carolina
and for the second straight week failed to hold on to a fourth-quarter
advantage. Air Force had a two-goal lead late in the game, but sur-
rendered three fourth-quarter goals in falling 10-9 in a hard-fought
battle.
Team tri-captain Michael Colosimo led the Falcons in scoring
with three goals. Meister and D.J. Benzing each had a pair of goals,
while Paul Adams and John Smith each tallied one goal. Pavoni had
18 saves in the loss.
Next, Air Force would suffer its third consecutive one-goal loss,
falling on the road to Delaware, 7-6, in non-conference action. The
Falcons led by two goals late in the game, but Delaware fought back.
The Blue Hens scored two goals in the final quarter, including the
game-winning extra man goal with 9:35 left to play to secure the vic-
tory. Air Force got two goals each from Dangler and Kuchta in the
loss.
The losing streak continued over spring break, when the Falcons
lost to Stony Brook, 7-3. A sluggish Air Force team never led in the
game. Dave Brown, Kuchta and Colosimo all had goals, but the
Falcons never challenged for the lead.
The streak of losses grew to five games when the Falcons hosted
No. 16 Notre Dame in the team's Great Western Lacrosse League
(GWLL) opener. In blistering weather conditions, the Falcons man-
aged just two goals against the Fighting Irish in a 12-2 loss. The
Falcons couldn't generate any offense and their defense had few
answers for a powerful Notre Dame attack. Both Air Force goals were
scored by Kuchta. Pavoni was peppered with shots throughout the
game. He
faced 40

shots and

Meanwhile,
Air Force

After a back-

first half, the

would pull away in the third quarter with three consecutive goals.
Meister was the offensive hero of the game, notching two goals and
three assists in the victory. Keleher and Benzing would each tally two
goals and an assist, while Dangler added a goal and two assists, for
three points each.
In its final home game of the year, Air Force suffered its fourth
one-goal loss of the season, falling to No. 18 Denver, 7-6. Late in the
game, the Falcons had a two-man advantage and were attacking the
Denver goal but a player stepped in the crease for the turnover. The
Pioneers successfully cleared the ball and scored on the ensuing pos-
session to break a 6-6 tie. It turned out to be the game winner for
Denver, as the Falcons couldn't score the neutralizer. It was the final
home game for 12 seniors, the biggest senior class under Acee.
Air Force then traveled to Columbus, Ohio, where the team faced
nationally ranked league opponent Ohio State. The No. 8 Buckeyes
pinned a 9-2 loss on the Falcons, as the Falcons could never get any-
thing going offensively. Benzing and Keleher scored the team's only
goals.
In the Falcons’ final conference game, Benzing scored four goals
and had four assists to lead Air Force to a 13-6 win over Butler.
Benzing finished the day with eight points, notching the highest sin-
gle-game point total in the seven years under Acee.
In a microcosm of the entire season, the Falcons suffered an 11-
10 overtime loss to Sacred Heart in the final game of the season.
Sacred Heart scored with 57 seconds to play in overtime to secure
the victory. The Falcons gave up a two-goal fourth quarter lead to the
Pioneers and suffered their fifth one-goal loss of the season.
The Pioneers trailed 7-4 at the half and battled back to tie the
game at 10 all with just under two minutes to play in regulation, send-
ing the game to the extra session. Both teams got offensive chances
in the overtime period but it was Sacred Heart which scored the win-
ning goal. Benzing finished with six points on five assists and a goal.
Kuchta had three goals, Keleher and Meister had two apiece with
Meister adding three assists to his day's point total.

were all
selected to
the all-con-
ference sec-
ond team.
Pavoni,
a sopho-
more, was
selected as second-team goalkeeper. In his first season minding the
net, Pavoni made an immediate impact. He finished the season third
in the nation in save percentage (.637). He tallied 156 saves and
allowed 89 goals in 11 games and finished 15th in the country in
goals against average (8.09). Pavoni was selected as the team's
defensive co-MVP.
Whittenberg, a freshman, earned his first all-conference award.
He was selected as a second-team defenseman. He was the team's
premier defender and was consistent in shutting down the opposing
team's leading scorer, and along with Pavoni, was selected as the
team's defensive co-MVP. He also shared the rookie of the year
award with two of his teammates.
Hade, a junior, was selected for his efforts as
a longstick middie. Hade notched 44 ground
balls and was the recipient of the team's Hoover
Award. He also was co-recipient of the team's
most improved defensive player award. In addi-
tion to league and team honors, Hade was voted
team co-captain for the 2005 season.
Colosimo was selected as the MVP of the Air
Force Academy lacrosse team. Colosimo, a four-
year letterwinner, was one of the team's three
captains in his final season. He started in all 12
games and was a force offensively, notching 11
goals and five assists. He was always a threat to
score and his 51 shots were third most on the
team.
Meister, who tied for the team lead in scoring,
was named co-rookie of the year, as well as the
most valuable offensive player. Meister finished
the season with 25 points on 11 goals and 14
assists. He had four multi-goal games and scored
the game-winning goal against Fairfield.
Kuchta also secured co-rookie of the year
honors. The freshman scored at least one goal in
10 of the 11 games he played in, including a four-goal performance
against Army and a hat trick against Sacred Heart. He finished the
year with a team-high 17 goals.
The team's other leading scorer, with 25 points, was Benzing, a
junior. Benzing tallied 10 goals and a team-high 15 assists and was
the recipient of the team's most improved offensive player award. He
totaled eight points on four goals and four assists in the team's win
over Butler. Benzing was voted co-captain for the 2005 season by his
teammates.
Several other players had great seasons for the Falcons. Keleher,
a senior, had 15 goals and two assists. The team's Golden Glove
Award winner, Keleher had five multi-goal games, including a three-
goal performance against Vermont. Dangler, a senior tri-captain, had
10 goals and nine assists and was one of the team's most prolific scor-
ers with four multi-goal games.
Jared Brush shared the award for most improved defensive play-
er with Hade, while three other players—seniors Jeff Moss, Monte
Caplan and Andy Sunderland—shared the Unsung Hero Award for
their contributions both on and off the field. Ray Wilson earned the
100 Percent Award, while tri-captain Kantz won the Top Dog Face-
Off Award.
Another strong performer for the Falcons was Dave Brown, recip-
ient of the Pace Weber Award. The award is presented yearly as a
tribute to former Air Force lacrosse player Pace Weber, who perished
along with his instructor in a T-3 flight training accident during his
senior year at the Academy. Voted on by members of the varsity
team, the recipient is an individual associated with the USAFA varsi-
ty lacrosse team, who most exemplifies the characteristics by which
Pace lived his life.
Overall, it was a season to be proud of for the Falcons. While
their final record was not what they had hoped for, the team showed
signs of greatness, including a win over the defending national cham-
pion. Now Air Force will focus on turning its one-goal losses into vic-
tories in the 2005 season.
