Michael Brake's theory divides youth into four types: respectable youth who conform to rules and avoid trouble; delinquent youth who engage in illegal activities; cultural rebels who are nonconformists interested in art and music; and politically militant youth involved in protests. Respectable youth are often portrayed as bullied for being idealistic, while delinquent youth are depicted as trouble-making and lower class in media like Kidulthood. Cultural rebels from the 1960s are shown as independent and enjoying recreational drugs and long hair. Politically militant youth protesting rising fees are unfairly portrayed in some media as uniformly violent despite peaceful intentions of many.
