This document discusses the Itaipu Dam located on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay. It describes the dam's massive scale, standing on 81 billion tons of reinforced concrete and supported by buttresses. The dam is equipped with 20 gigantic penstocks that discharge 700 cubic meters of water per second directly into turbines to produce electricity in the largest hydroelectric plant in the world. While hydroelectric dams provide clean energy, they also displace populations and modify water ecosystems.
