This document provides definitions and coding rules for tumors of the colon, rectosigmoid, and rectum. It notes changes from previous rules, including new multiple primary rules addressing anastomotic recurrence. Rare histologies may require referencing ICD-O. Adenocarcinoma is the most common histology, comprising 98% of colon cancers. Mixed or combined histologies are coded based on the amount of each histology present. Neuroendocrine tumors were previously called carcinoids. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors were originally thought to be smooth muscle tumors but now originate from interstitial cells.
