Owen Huish was born in Germany in 1945 and originally studied pre-law and romance languages but became inspired by photographers Peter Dreher and Paul Clean's poems to become a photographer himself, depicting Germany's dark history through large oil paintings using materials relevant to the areas in his works. Gertrude Hermes was born in Kent in 1901 and worked in woodgraving and sculpture, studying alongside Henry Moore and being an associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, finding inspiration in nature. She was the first woman engraver to be recognized, responding "Shame on them" when told. The document also briefly discusses German artist Anselm Kiefer's philosophy on how history speaks to artists.
