Vitamin C deficiency, also known as scurvy, results in weakened and bleeding gums, spots and bruises on the skin, joint pain, and bleeding in the tissues. It is caused by a lack of vitamin C in the diet, which is needed to help form collagen in connective tissues. Left untreated it can lead to life-threatening hemorrhages in organs like the brain.
