Sir John Armitt CBE is currently Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, National Express Group, City and Guilds and is Deputy Chairman of the Berkeley Group.
Sir John is also a member of the Board of Transport for London and the Airports Commission, he is a Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
In September 2013 The Armitt Review Sir John’s independent review of long term infrastructure planning in the UK was published.
After leaving John Laing plc in 1993, where Sir John had been Chairman of Laing’s international and civil engineering divisions, he joined Union Railways, the company responsible for development of the high‐speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link, as Chief Executive. In 1997 he became Chief Executive of Costain, a position he held until 2001.
Sir John was Chief Executive of Railtrack plc from 2001 and Chief Executive of Network Rail from 2002 to 2007. He was Chairman of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council until March 2012.
Sir John was awarded the CBE in 1996 for his contribution to the rail industry and received a knighthood in the New Year Honours List 2012 for services to engineering and construction.

The paper deals about the development, comparison, testing and analysis of composite materials and
sandwich composite panels. In this paper we have carried out testing of mechanical and physical properties of
coir composites, SMC laminate, Bamboo Composite, Cement bonded wooden particle composite. Then we have
used SMC Laminate on coir composite so as to increase its strength. Also we have carried out tensile test for
bamboo composite, coir composite, cement bonded composite. Then we have compared the values of these
composites. Water absorption test and flame test of coir composite, Bamboo composite has been carried out, so
as to find out the mechanical and physical properties of composite materials. Finally, Bending test and Analysis
of sandwich composite panels has been carried out for bamboo-EPS sandwich panel and Bison-EPS sandwich
panel to understand the characteristics of sandwich composite panels.

Vernacular architecture of Tigray and Dorze Houses
The Dorze people of Ethiopia are known for their beehive-shaped huts built from vertical wood poles and woven bamboo. Reaching heights of 12 meters, the huts are subdivided into sections for cooking, livestock, bedrooms, and brewing and can last 60-80 years. When foundations deteriorate, the entire structure is carefully lifted and relocated. The Tigray people of northern Ethiopia construct rectangular or rounded stone houses with flat, wood-covered roofs and beautifully carved exterior stone steps. Interior walls are painted white using crushed limestone, while ceilings feature curved wood in geometric patterns. Wealthier homes include three free-standing buildings within stone fences.

Using various case studies, the session will address the sharing of image resources between and among different institutions, determining when and how images can be made available to the general public, creating image-based research collaborations across national boundaries, and the international aspects of publishing with images.

Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

A Deep Dive into ScyllaDB's Architecture
This talk will cover ScyllaDB Architecture from the cluster-level view and zoom in on data distribution and internal node architecture. In the process, we will learn the secret sauce used to get ScyllaDB's high availability and superior performance. We will also touch on the upcoming changes to ScyllaDB architecture, moving to strongly consistent metadata and tablets.
Demystifying Knowledge Management through Storytelling
The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) invited Taylor Paschal, Knowledge & Information Management Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, to speak at a Knowledge Management Lunch and Learn hosted on June 12, 2024. All Office of Administration staff were invited to attend and received professional development credit for participating in the voluntary event.
The objectives of the Lunch and Learn presentation were to:
- Review what KM ‘is’ and ‘isn’t’
- Understand the value of KM and the benefits of engaging
- Define and reflect on your “what’s in it for me?”
- Share actionable ways you can participate in Knowledge - - Capture & Transfer
Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
