Integration of Research Infrastructures
RISIS offers access to all of our datasets and plat-
forms.Researchers can stay for up to a week at the
research institutions managing the facilities,access
the data on-site,receive advice and training on the
use of the data,and develop collaboration on data

The purpose of RISIS is to develop a distributed infrastructure serv-
ing researchers in the field of science and innovation studies.
We are developing databases and analytical tools that improve our under-
standing and are developing indicators that match the theoretical state of
the art. We aim:
To stabilise and maintain our databases and make them available to all
interested researchers in Europe.
To develop new datasets to address the lasting theoretical and policy
problems only partially covered by existing systems.
To improve the interface between datasets, and work towards better
problem-based integration.
To develop platforms that will help researchers build their datasets from
a variety of data, and provide them with instruments to organize and
analyse a wealth of information.
To develop an overall architecture for the infrastructure so that research-
ers can access, build, integrate and treat data at a distance.
Platform: We are creating a common space
for the RISIS research infrastructure that can be
accessed by external users, where databases and
platforms can be improved through new work on
interoperability and matching, with new acces-
sions and new datasets that can be accredited.
The central mechanism to organise robust
and repeatable processes for issue-based data
integration is the ‘linked open data’ that is
composed by several steps - from the user side:
explore metadata, explore links, build direct
query; from the infrastructure side: conversion,
interlinking, enrichment, and integration.
Interoperability: : RISIS is developing the
register of public sector-organizations (RegPub),a
central facility which aims at uniquely identifying
and tracking over time public-sector organizations
involved in the research system,including research
funding agencies,higher education institutions
and public research organizations.The register
provides a unambiguous list of these organizations
and attributes them a unique ID,based on their
organizational identity,which is stable over time
and can be matched with different names and
identifiers used in other RISIS facilities.
Visits
Training
Improving the capabilities of researchers in science
and innovation studies to mobilise big data and
quantitative analyses is a major challenge.Through
our training programme we aim to prepare
researchers to both the use of the datasets and
platforms we offer,and to analyse such data.
RISIS supports 3 types of courses: one or two-
day courses introducing researchers to a dataset
or a platform; two-day courses for introducing
specific methods or types of information; and
one-week schools targeting more specifically
young researchers focused on a thematic, meth-
problem-based integration.
Technical visits are available to ensure technical
robustness and reliability.
The costs of visits are funded by the RISIS
project.

Matching: : We have already matched data
in some existing databases, such as the ETER
data on Tertiary Higher Education Organizations
with the Leiden bibliometric data and with
the EUPRO data on projects funded under the
European Framework Programmes. Others will
be developed in the coming months.
