The newsletter from the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative (HEMI) announces upcoming events, recognizes donors and mentees, and provides information on scholarships. It highlights a ladies night event with spoken word, thanks AT&T for a $12,000 donation to scholarships, and shares a video and message from a mentee studying abroad in Germany. Ladies Night Out at the Aronoff
DADA RAFIKI: A CELEBRATION OF SISTERHOOD
Proclaimed poet and spoken word artist Annie Ruth will preform her annual
celebration of sisterhood, Dada Rafiki, on October 27 at the Aronoff Center
at 7:00 p.m. A private donor has generously provided 10 tickets to enable
HEMI mentors and mentees to attend. Tickets are offered on a first come,
first served basis. This event has proven to be vibrant and has power to
inspire – reserve your seat today!

3. AT&T Donates $12,000 to HEMI
Scholarship Fund!!!
A huge thank you to AT&T for their generous donation to the HEMI Scholarship
Fund! This contribution will go to supporting many Hamilton County foster
youth and their dreams of pursing higher education and career training. Your
continued support over the years has gone a long way in making impactful
changes in our community, and for that we say, 'Thank you!'
If you would also like to contribute to helping Hamilton County foster youth
finance their educational aspirations, click on the link below. Make your gift
selection and check the box next to "Choose an area for this gift to support". In

Mentee Mentioning

5. Remember Isabel, a HEMI mentee who was the recipient of a competitive
scholarship to study German abroad? Check out some of her pictures and read
her message that came all the way from Germany.
"It has officially been two weeks since my departure from the United States, and
Germany has already begun to feel like home. Every morning, I visit the local
bakery for some coffee and an authentic German pretzel on my way to school. I
tested into the second highest language course, and I see my language abilities
growing everyday. I finally feel comfortable speaking in German! After school, I
take the train to have a German lunch (aka the "hot meal" of the day). The view
from the hostel is absolutely breathtaking, overlooking one of the largest
shipping ports in Germany. After lunch, we meet up with our counselors and visit
museums, nearby cities, and other touristy things. We return to the hostel for a
German dinner, which is usually just bread and lunch meat. I am meeting lots of
new people, making some new friends, and having an amazing time!"
Attendance Awareness Month

6. September is Attendance Awareness Month, and it gives us an opportunity to
promote the importance attending school has on academic performance and the
important role mentors play in encouraging youth to go to school
everyday. #SchoolEveryDay
"Mentoring is a great way to promote education and has been proven to increase
attendance in mentees. Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52%
less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 55% more likely to aspire
to enroll in college. By having a positive impact on just one student’s attendance,
mentors can help increase learning in the classroom for all students. Learn more
about mentoring and academic achievement here."

7. HEMI Scholarship Applications for 2018-2018 are now available!
Completed applications must be returned no later than October 18th, 2017.
We strongly encourage you to work closely with your mentor to complete your
application. Please contact your program specialist with any questions or
concerns.

HEMI Defined:
The Higher Education Mentoring Initiative (HEMI) helps prepare foster
youth for educational opportunities beyond high school. The HEMI program
recruits, trains, and supports mentors to establish positive long-term
relationships with foster youth. HEMI mentors assist, encourage, and
support student academic achievement, and also help create a direct
pathway to higher education. HEMI is a partnership between Hamilton
County Board of County Commissioners, Hamilton County Job and Family
Services, the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State Technical and
Community College, Great Oaks Career Campuses, and Mount St. Joseph
University.
