It’s all there. In your head. The ideas have been there long enough. It’s time to let them out
and make them grow. If you only had the resources, the know-how, the support.
It’s all here. Between a bustling metropolis and mountain peaks sits your starting point.
Welcome to the place where ideas meet reality. WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH.
4. D ISCOVER U TAH
Utah offers an incredible landscape for adventure and discovery. Seven world-renowned ski resorts, including the largest in the U.S., are just a short
ride from campus. Utah is also home to five stunning national parks that attract tourists from around the globe, as well as students from the U’s
Outdoor Adventures program, which provides equipment rentals and planned trips to some of Utah’s most remarkable destinations.
Nicknamed the“Silicon Slopes,”Utah is home to industry leading tech companies like Adobe, eBay, Overstock.com, IM Flash Technologies, Ancestry.com,
and Qualtrics. Like so many others, you may come for a quality education only to find yourself staying for your dream job. And the mountains. And the

Our professors are knowledge generators, constantly pushing the limits of their fields of study, then bringing new knowledge back to their
classrooms. Their contributions are the main reason the University of Utah received more than $285 million in research funding in 2014. Of our
full-time professors, 83.7% have the highest degree attainable in their field, with numerous special awards and recognitions to boot. More course
offerings are now available online, providing flexible options to complete your studies at uonline.utah.edu. And the best part? Our 17:1 student-

7. UNDERGR ADUATE RESEARCH
Of the more than 3,000 four-year universities in the U.S., only 108 land in the Carnegie Classification’s top tier for research activity. The U is one of
them, thanks in large measure to the number of undergraduate students participating in our research initiatives. This means that as early as your
first year of study, you can get involved in research opportunities that would normally be reserved for graduate students elsewhere. In doing
so, you’ll familiarize yourself with the research process, expand your network of knowledgeable faculty and fellow students, and gain valuable
experience that prepares you for future careers and/or graduate school. Check out the undergraduate research opportunities that are currently
available at our.utah.edu/opportunities.
THE HONORS COLLEGE
The honors bachelor’s degree is the highest undergraduate degree conferred by the University of Utah. Grounded in the liberal arts and sciences,
the Honors College searches for students who embrace challenge and have a thirst to explore new perspectives. As an honors student, you’ll
develop next-level writing, critical thinking, and problem solving skills through rigorous course work that eventually culminates in a thesis or
capstone project. Add to that a competitive admissions process, and that the honors degree is only awarded to student with a 3.5 or above, and
it’s no wonder many honors grads go on to top-tier graduate programs and careers. honors.utah.edu

Location was one of the main reasons I decided on the U. Salt Lake is pretty much an ideal city, in that it is large
enough to be interesting/fun and yet small enough not to be oppressive.
I compete on the U’s nationally ranked Pistol Marksmanship team, and was able to attend the Intercollegiate
National Championship in Ft. Benning, Georgia. I have also been involved with the Robotics Team for several
years, and I was able to compete with our robots at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. It is refreshing
to take a break from your major, and the U is large and diverse enough that there is something for everyone.

An openness to and appreciation of differences—in aspects like thought, experience, belief,

we’ve had in college. Labs for Liberty raises and trains Labrador retrievers as service dogs for wounded

are paired with a veteran. The U students and volunteers involved with Labs for Liberty are like a second
family for us and make being away from home for college much easier.

The transition from high school to college can be a lot like jumping into a pool. Many fear the initial plunge so much that they only dip
their toes in, never fully immersing themselves in the college experience. Don’t let that be you. Instead, dive right in by being engaged in and
out of the classroom.

2. J O IN A LEARNING CO MMUNIT Y
Learning Communities (LCs) group students with similar interests together to foster innovation, academic excellence, and friendship. Some follow a
cohort model, where you take your first year of courses with the same group of students. If you’re looking for support with making friends, or keeping
up with the academic rigor of university life, a learning community or other academic enrichment program may be right for you.

deep engagement experience.”
Well, President Pershing has delivered in a big way.

I joined the faculty at Utah because of the excellent research reputation of the Department of Chemistry,
but I’ve stayed for 30 years because of the great students I teach.
I strive to bring the thrill of scientific discovery into the classroom whether teaching at the first-year or
graduate level. Ultimately success in this endeavor is measured by the accomplishments of students.
I have shared the Nobel Laureate Signature Award in Graduate Education with a former Ph.D. student,
and former undergraduate research students in my lab have gone on to graduate and professional study
at the top institutions in the country.

Do you have a great idea for a business, but don’t know where to start? Are you interested in creating social change, but don’t know who to talk to?
Have you dreamed of making a scientific discovery, but lack connections and resources?
What you need is a mentor. Someone who has been there before and taken their idea from conception to completion. Lucky for you, the U is full of them.
The U student experience is a series of personalized learning opportunities that take you from the ground floor to the top. Whether you are in the
lab with a professor, working alongside upperclassmen in the community, or taking advantage of the hundreds of programs in place to enhance
your academic experience, you can forge lasting relationships with (and get real help from) someone at the cutting edge of your field of study.

YOU LIVE. YOU LEARN.
What if you could guarantee that you and your housemates will have at least one thing in common? That’s just one of the benefits of Living Learning
Communities (LLCs). LLCs are on-campus housing communities that bring like-minded students together to live and learn. Each community is based
on an academic or community-based theme. Examples include the Crocker Science House, the Outdoor Leadership Floor, and the First-year Honors

25. Investing in yourself through education is one of the most cost-effective decisions you will ever make. If you have a bachelor’s degree, you can earn
double the amount you would earn if you only had your high school diploma. The cost of attendance (COA) below is an estimate of what it would
cost to attend the U. The COA covers more than tuition — it also includes your basic living expenses. Your financial aid award package offered to you
in Spring 2017 will have options to assist with covering the COA. admissions.utah.edu/cost
ESTIMATED 2016-17 ACADEMIC YEAR COST OF ATTENDANCE
Based on 26 credit hours — 13 each Fall and Spring semesters.
All costs are subject to change without notice and are expected to increase annually. The Cost of Attendance is based on estimated figures and may not accurately reflect an individual students costs. The combination of the direct and indirect
costs will be used to determine financial aid. *Please note, this rate is based on reported average costs for all undergraduate students at the U. Freshman costs may be up to $2-3K less, due to lower freshman housing fees. Estimated costs may
vary based on room type and meal plan selection. **Miscellaneous costs include things like medical expenses, clothing, haircuts, telephone, and other utilities, etc. §Fees associated with student loan borrowing have been accounted for in the
total budget for both Residents and Non-residents. Loan fees will vary.

RESIDENC Y
Out-of-state students can qualify for in-state tuition after one year. Here’s how:
1..Physically reside in Utah for 12 consecutive months (no more than 29 days out of state)
2..Declare financial independence by removing yourself as a dependent from any out-of-state tax returns
3..Establish intent to become a resident of Utah (get a Utah driver’s license, register to vote, etc.)
4..Apply for residency reclassification by the appropriate deadline
Residency can be straightforward for some, and complicated for others. Special exceptions apply to military servicemen and women. For more
information, visit admissions.utah.edu/apply/residency.
