JUTE Theatre Company is a vibrant presence in the limited arts and cultural community in Cairns. It plays an important role in contributing to the liveability and vitality of our community.
We seek your assistance towards raising $300,000 per year for 5 years that JUTE needs to maintain its place in the cultural landscape of North Queensland.
Will you support JUTE?
3. As part of a world community Cairns and North Queensland compete nationally and
internationally to attract residents, businesses and visitors.
Community liveability is a complex mix of social, cultural, economic and environmental
attributes. Broader features determine how attractive a city or region is when people assess
where they wish to live, raise a family or invest.
There is undeniable global interest in the Cairns region as a tourist destination. People come
from around the world for our abundant natural attractions, climate and lifestyle, and the
culture and history of our population, including our unique Indigenous population.
Focused investment in the development of JUTE Theatre Company will attract established
artists and designers from around the world. The increasing quality and growing reputation of
the work produced will in turn attract visitors, encourage longer stays in the area and
enhance quality of life for residents and potential new populations.

4. Arts and Culture build identity
Without their influence the community landscape would be
very different. People’s expectations of their communities,
themselves and their children would be desolate.
When cultural life is vibrant, the talent drain is reduced and
our intelligent and creative young people stay to become the
next generation of leaders.
As business and social leaders, would we demand anything
less for our children and our community? For ourselves?

9. Audience Responses – 2014 shows
"We're from Johannesburg...Of course we went to see the big musical in Melbourne and that was fine. But we are
so glad we came to this show because it is such an authentic Australian story that we got a real insight into the
Australian psyche, and frankly we didn't expect to see such high quality theatre in a place like Cairns."
“That was powerful evocative and often mesmerising. It not only worked as a piece of theatre but it was really
good theatre".
"This is true theatre of Northern Australia - such incredible authenticity”
Local Peer Feedback – 2014
“Without JUTE nurturing and presenting our region's serious performing arts talent, a large chunk of my cultural
enrichment would disappear.”
Ingrid Hoffman, Cairns Regional Gallery
“For playwrights in the North, JUTE acts as a crucible to the emergence of an authentic regional cultural voice. For
audiences, JUTE gives us all the opportunity to really recognize and understand our life and times.”
Kathryn Ash, Award Winning Playwright
“JUTE is a staple of Cairns cultural life. JUTE has provided me personally with some of the most valuable creative
and professional development opportunities I've had so far - without having to relocate to a major city.”
Trish Molloy, Composer/Sound Designer
“JUTE Theatre Company has been paramount in my theatrical career. They have given me a chance as an Actor,
Director and now as a Playwright.”
