This document summarizes an experiment conducted by L'Express Lab on drone journalism. They lent drones to 5 experimenters from different backgrounds for 3 months to examine how each would use this new tool. The experimenters found that piloting skills are essential for drone journalism. While drones provide new perspectives, technical difficulties remain. The experiment helped evaluate drones' potential for journalism and sparked discussion, but did not clearly establish drones as a new journalistic format. It revealed drones may one day enhance reporting but require further development and practice.
With 20 years of experience running academic-year programs in Nepal, Cornell is launching a new collaboration with the central Tribhuvan University campus in Nepal over the summer. In 2014, there will be two new summer programs, one for undergraduates and one for professional masters students. The undergraduate program will place students to live with families and to teach English in underserved rural schools. The masters program will make placements in a wide range of professional internships. Both programs will also involve coursework in support of these placements, instruction in Nepali, guest lectures, cultural activities, and tours, including a short Himalayan trek. As with all Cornell-Tribhuvan collaborations, these summer programs will involve both Nepalese and American students.

State of ICS and IoT Cyber Threat Landscape Report 2024 previewPrayukth K V
The IoT and OT threat landscape report has been prepared by the Threat Research Team at Sectrio using data from Sectrio, cyber threat intelligence farming facilities spread across over 85 cities around the world. In addition, Sectrio also runs AI-based advanced threat and payload engagement facilities that serve as sinks to attract and engage sophisticated threat actors, and newer malware including new variants and latent threats that are at an earlier stage of development.
The latest edition of the OT/ICS and IoT security Threat Landscape Report 2024 also covers:
State of global ICS asset and network exposure
Sectoral targets and attacks as well as the cost of ransom
Global APT activity, AI usage, actor and tactic profiles, and implications
Rise in volumes of AI-powered cyberattacks
Major cyber events in 2024
Malware and malicious payload trends
Cyberattack types and targets
Vulnerability exploit attempts on CVEs
Attacks on counties – USA
Expansion of bot farms – how, where, and why
In-depth analysis of the cyber threat landscape across North America, South America, Europe, APAC, and the Middle East

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Drone’s boom : 2012-2013
• Since the early 90s, the civil drone is used in cinema but only the military
function was noticeablebecause of its complexity and its cost
• Since 2 years, the coming up of drones « key in hand » revolutionned the
access to a technology and in the same time opened the way to a new
democratisation of the drone’s use.
• In 2012, The first significant experiments about civil uses of drones took
place: counting elephants, watching fire, recording events…

• End of 2012 and in a pragmatic way,
we’ve decided to lead this experiment
to build ourselves an opinion.
• We’ve lend drones to 5 experimenters

The Drone, a piloting matter
• Piloting is the drone journalism’s keystone.
• It needs hours of practice, a propitious weather and a good
anticipation of battery’s capacity.
• It’s exposed to many technical difficulties (vibrations,
picture’s stability and safety…)
• However these difficulties are to shade according to the
drone’s type!

Towards an activist drone?
• « The important thing, with a drone, is to wear good shoes»
• Gives good spotting ans zones tracking
• Limited with wind, but overhead views bring an large
eyesightmais of a protest march.
• Without necessary counting, it gives a concrete idea of a mass
• For piloting, smartphones are more convenient than tablets

Conclusion
• We have published about fifteen articles on
our blog and our experimenters shared many
recordings
• Our experiment has been took over by many
medias (Le monde, Rfi, France Info, Télérama,
AFP, etc..), helped colleagues questionning
themselves and made react different kinds of
professions.
• Our empirical approach shows that only a
good pratice could give a real place to drone
journalism

Conclusion
« 10% journalist, 30% video, 60% piloting : with the drone
journalism, the journalist makes use of a new sight, the
videast enhances it… but nothing is possible without piloting
competences. The possibilities we’ve considered help to
predict a shining future for the drone journalism »
