You are a great inspiration to women around the world. I would love for us to meet and discuss these important
issues together.

Path to Fame
You could mistake me for a
simple Muslim woman, but I
defied the prejudiced ideas
about women’s rights. To do so,
I dared to drive a car. For many
of you, it may seem easy and
plain task, but for me it was a
great step towards liberty.

As a TEDx embassador of Pakistan, I would like to invite you to speak about your journey in life and give some
advices to other women, since you’ve done so well in your other conferences.

In my opinion, the most important thing to remember is that the real struggle is having the courage to sit on
the driver’s seat.

Saarah Maktub
I’m a seventeenth year old Arabian girl who feels very inspired by your story. What advice would you give me?

About Manal

Friends

I consider myself a very brave woman. I’ve always been keen on doing campaigns about
women’s rights, although I have never committed myself to do it as a career. I went to university
too, as everyone else. I decided to take a degree in computing and I even got a Cisco career
certification, which I am very proud of. Later I worked as an Internet Security Consultant. It was
a very interesting experience as I always loved to work with technology. I also like to read and
specially to write. Actually, I wrote a few thing for Al Watan, a daily newspaper very well known
in Saudi Arabia. However, my life was all about up and downs and downs. I suffered from
discrimination as well as all the women in Saudi Arabia for many years. Hope I am an
inspirations for other women.

My Journey
By Manal al-Sharif (Albums) * Updated 1 day ago

In June 17th, 2011, I started a campaign to get as
many women as possible to get behind the wheel and
drive.

The first time I felt that I could change the world with
my story was when I spoke in the Oslo Freedom
Forum. I finally felt recognized, at least by the western
culture.

Me and my son Aboody, who has also faced many
adversities throughout this process. But his support
has been unconditional!

One of the best moments in my life: sharing my
experience with people in such a broad platform like
TEDxTalks and showing them that women can also do
amazing things and take control of their lives.

The campaign was able to make an effective change
the Arabian society, as the Council has accepted my
petition to lift the driving ban for women.
