10. COMMUNITY BASED ADAPTATION
70 young volunteers drawn from selected communities in
Monrovia formed part of a two-day Community Based
adaptation training at the Monrovia City Hall, on the
benefits and impacts of coastal ecosystems and the
urgency for grassroots community action to combat
climate change in Liberia.
The exercise is part of series of activities organized under
the UNDP National Adaptation Plans Project (NAPs) in
partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia
(SCNL) and the National Disaster Management Agency
(NDMA), with funding from the Green Climate Fund.
11. Management of the artisanal and small-scale mining activities in
Liberia has become a critical issue within the Countryโs mineral
sector
โข The pervasive and unprecedented nature of illegal alluvial
mining activities has reached a point of serious concern that
can no longer be ignored by all stakeholders.
โข For over two years now the Ministry of Mines and Energy has
not been able to run an effective M&E due to lack of funding
and logistics for inspectorate operations.
โข This has resulted into the Ministryโs inability to an effective
licensing regime.

12. Limited presence of field staff and inspectors has
exacerbated:
โข Continuous usage of heavy machineries without
required plans and permits;
โข Introduction of dangerous chemical substances
for the recovery of gold;
โข Pollution of our water bodies, the environmental
health and safety concerns; and
โข Most importantly, trading and usage of Illegal
drugs, money laundering and security concerns
within these affected areas, Etc.
