May 28, 1684 - John Baptist De La Salle
 and twelve others made their first
 solemn vow of obedience.

    With this vow came the title
    “Brothers of the Christian

  or religious formation house in Vaugirard.

•            -Here they lived a life of extraordinary
    penance and recollection
•
•        -It was in this house that they pronounced the
    heroic vow of Association, meaning they promised
    to live together and maintain their schools even if
    they have to beg and live on bread alone

• From 1702 the founder began to endure a long period of trial,
• aggravated by persecution on the part of certain ecclesiastical
  authorities..
• In 1703 one of his most trusted disciples, Nicolas Vuyart,
  treacherously deserted him.
• For the next ten years the holy founder was engaged in a
  series of struggles for the preservation of his institute,
• in the course of which his name was attacked, and justice
  denied him before the civil tribunals.

                                            Bartolomew as his successor,
                                            John spent the remaining of
                                            his days in self-effacement,
                                            mental prayers, obedience
