St. John Baptist de la Salle was born in 1651 in Rheims, France to a wealthy family. After becoming an ordained priest in 1678, he established the first school for boys in 1679 and dedicated his life to teaching. He and several colleagues took vows in 1684 to form the Brothers of the Christian Schools teaching order. De la Salle endured persecution but remained committed to providing education to the poor. He died in 1719 and was later canonized as the patron saint of teachers.

• From 1702 the founder began to endure a long period of trial,
• aggravated by persecution on the part of certain ecclesiastical
authorities..
• In 1703 one of his most trusted disciples, Nicolas Vuyart,
treacherously deserted him.
• For the next ten years the holy founder was engaged in a
series of struggles for the preservation of his institute,
• in the course of which his name was attacked, and justice
denied him before the civil tribunals.
