Let us all acknowledge that the Church has deviated somewhat from sound doctrine, with the resultant effect on the lives of God’s people.
Many leaders have been influenced by prosperity teachings in recent years, and are seeking to gain for themselves. Others do not realise that the preaching of the Cross is the power of God to bring Christians to spiritual maturity.
It is time to address some key issues directly, so that Christians may realise that the Lord has better things in store for them, so that they can walk in freedom and in victory!

This presentation is for the Wednesday Night Auditorium Class at the Henderson church of Christ in Henderson, TN. The study is based on the book by Jack P. Lewis: "Basic Beliefs"
What does Christian unity really look? Why is it needed? Is unity always good? This Bible study outlines what the Bible says about unity within the Body of Christ.
This is a study of Jesus as the true vine, and of his disciples as the branches. They were to bring forth fruit or their branches would be cut off. All believers are expected to bear fruit.

Fellowship is one of those buzz Christian words. Churches have
fellowship halls, fellowship meetings, and times of fellowship. But what
do we mean?
The Greek word is koinonia, which translates as partnership. The origin
of the word is koinonos, which means partner, sharer, and companion. In
short, it is a shared community that involves deep, close-knit
participation among its people. The picture then is not of a surface-level,
friendly fellowship but of a radical and almost intimate unity. And this is
the consistent teaching of the New Testament. The first occurrence of
koinonia in the Bible comes in Acts 2:42. The newly baptized believers
“devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship
(koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Luke comments that
they, “had everything in common” as they sold property to give to
anyone in need, gathered regularly in the temple courts, and ate joyfully
in their homes (Acts 2:43-47). This is far more than formal nominal
Christianity. This is the real deal. And it’s attractive because it’s so real. God has saved us to belong to his new family, and the mark of true
belonging is an active love which sacrificially serves.
The temptation to introduce "new" things into the work of God has always been too strong for some people to resist... Today this trend has accelerated beyond recognition despite A.W. Tozer's warning. Christians should be spiritually awakened so as to discern God’s original ways from man-made false ways in every area of Christianity.

Pater Noster (Matthew 6:9-13) As a Paradigm for Ecumenical Commitment among C...iosrjce
Overt self-alienation characterises wilful disunity existing among Christians, particularly in Nigeria.
Evidence of this is obvious in the number of Christian sects springing up daily. Each has its own interpretation
of the message of Christ’s Good News, thereby generating diversified and conflicting views on Christian belief.
This paper argues that the Pater Noster (The Lord’s Prayer), a common Christian prayer, is a paradigm for
ecumenical commitment. It studies the Matthean version of this prayer in conjunction with its other traditions in
the New Testament and the Didache. In the Pater Noster we find the reason for ecumenical endeavour for which
Jesus prayed and which should be a concern of all Christians
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

11th August 2017 - Why so many Christian denominations?
1. Why so many Christian denominations? –11th

“ Father, I pray they will be one, just as you are in me and I am in you. I want them also to be
in us. Then the world will believe that you have sent me. (John 17:21).
In a religiouscontext,the word denomination isoftendefinedas“arecognizedautonomousbranchof
the Christianchurch.”One denominationwillincludemanylocal churchesthatare usuallyspreadovera
broad geographical region. Todaywe cancount 10,000-plus Protestantdenominationsspreadround the
world. To answerthe above question,we mustfirstdifferentiatebetweendenominations withinthe
bodyof Christandnon-Christiancultsandfalse religions.PresbyteriansandLutheransare examplesof
Christiandenominations while MormonsandJehovah’sWitnessesare examplesof cults because these
groupsclaimto be Christianbutdenyingone ormore of the essentialsof the Christian faith. The rise of
denominationswithinthe Christianfaithcanbe tracedback to the ProtestantReformation, the
movementto“reform”the RomanCatholicChurchduringthe 16th century,outof whichfourmajor
divisionsortraditionsof Protestantismwouldemerge:Lutheran,Reformed,Anabaptist,andAnglican.
From these four, otherdenominationsgrew overthe centuries. Whenhe wasquestionsregarding
above,a leadingpastorquotedProverbs27:17,“As iron sharpens iron,so one person sharpens
another.”
The LutherandenominationwasnamedafterMartinLutherandwas basedonhis teachings.The

wordfor elderis ‘presbyteros.’Baptistsgottheirname because theyhave alwaysemphasizedthe
importance of baptism.Eachdenominationhasaslightlydifferentdoctrineoremphasisfromthe others,
such as the methodof baptism;the availabilityof the Lord’sSuppertoall or justto those whose
testimoniescanbe verifiedbychurchleaders;the sovereigntyof Godvs.free will inthe matterof
salvation;the future of Israel andthe church; pre-tribulationvs.post-tribulationrapture;the existence
of the “sign”giftsinthe modernera, and so on. The pointof these divisionsisneverChristasLordand

Denominationstodayare manyand varied.The original “mainline”denominationsmentionedabove
have spawnednumerousoffshootssuchasAssembliesof God,ChristianandMissionaryAlliance,
Nazarenes,Evangelical Free,independentBible churches,andothers.Some denominationsemphasize
slightdoctrinal differences,butmore oftentheysimplyofferdifferentstylesof worshiptofitthe
differingtastesandpreferencesof Christians.Butmake nomistake:asbelievers,we mustbe of one
mindon the essentialsof the faith, butbeyondthatthere isgreatdeal of latitude inhow Christians
shouldworshipinacorporate setting.Thislatitude iswhatcausessomanydifferent“flavors”of
Christianity. A PresbyterianchurchinUganda will have astyle of worshipmuchdifferentfroma
PresbyterianchurchinColorado,buttheirdoctrinal standwill be,forthe mostpart,the same.Diversity
isa goodthing, butdisunityisnot. If two churchesdisagree doctrinally, debate anddialogue overthe
Word may be calledfor.Thistype of “iron sharpeningiron” isbeneficialtoall aswe alsolearnfrom
Proverbs 27:17, “Asiron sharpensiron, so one person sharpensanother.”
But if theydisagree onstyle andform, itis fine forthemto remainseparate ratherthanquarrel with
differentdenominations.Howeverthisseparation doesnotliftthe responsibilityChristianshave tolove
one anotheras a priorityinour lives aswe can learnfrom1 John4:11-12, “Dear friends, since Godloved
us thismuch, we shouldalsolove one another. 12
No one hasever seen God.But ifwe love one
2. another, Godlivesin us.His love is made completein us.” As Godspeople belongingtowhatever
denomination, ultimately all needtobe unitedasone inChrist as we can learnfrom John17:21-22,
“ Father, I praythey will be one, justas you are in me and I am in you.I wantthem also to be in us.
Then the worldwill believe that you have sent me. 22
I have giventhem the gloryyou gave me. I did
this sothey wouldbe one, justas we are one.”
In the same way these isa downside of ChristianDenominations. There seemstobe atleasttwomajor
problems.First, nowhere inScripture isthere amandate fordenominationalism;tothe contrarythe
mandate isfor unionandconnectivity.Thus,the secondproblemisthathistorytellsusthat
denominationalismisthe resultof,orcausedby,conflictandconfrontationwhichleadstodivisionand
separation.Jesustoldusthata house dividedagainstitselfcannotstand.Thisgeneral principle canand
shouldbe appliedtothe church. We findanexample of thisinthe Corinthianchurchwhichwas
strugglingwithissuesof divisionandseparation.Therewere those whothoughtthattheyshouldfollow
Paul and those whothoughttheyshouldfollowthe teachingof Apollosaswe canlearnfrom 1
Corinthians 1:12, "Here is whatI mean. One of you says,“I followPaul.” Anothersays,“I follow
Apollos.” Anothersays,“I followPeter.” And still another says,“I followChrist.” Thisalone shouldtell
youwhat Paul thoughtof denominationsoranythingelse thatseparatesanddividesthe body.
But let’slookfurther;inverse 13,Paul asks verypointedquestions,"IsChristdivided?WasitPaul who
was crucifiedforyou?Orwere youbaptizedinPaul’sname?”Thismakesclearhow Paul feels, thathe
(Paul) isnotthe Christ,he is notthe one crucifiedandhismessage hasneverbeenone thatdividesthe
church or wouldleadsomeone toworshipPaul instead of Christ.Obviously, accordingtoPaul, there is
onlyone church and one bodyof believersandanythingthatisdifferentweakensanddestroysthe
church. We can getan understandingwhenwe readin 1Corinthians1:17, “Christdidnot sendme to
baptize. He sent me to preach the goodnews. He commandedme not to preach with wisdomand
fancywords. That wouldtake all the power away from the cross of Christ.”
Some of the problemswe are facedwithtodayaswe lookat denominationalismanditsmore recent
history: 1. The mainline Denominationsare basedondisagreementsoverthe interpretationof
Scripture.Anexample wouldbe the meaningandpurpose of baptism.Isbaptismarequirementfor
salvationorisit symbolicof the salvationprocess? There are denominationsonbothsidesof thisissue.
In fact, baptism– its meaning, itsmode, whocanreceive it,etc. – hasbeena central issue inthe
separationof churchesandformingof new denominations. 2.Disagreementsoverthe interpretationof
Scripture are takenpersonallyandbecome pointsof contention.Thisleadstoargumentswhichcanand
have done muchto destroythe witnessof the church. 3. The church shouldbe able toresolvesits
differencesinside the body,butonce againhistorytellsusthatthisdoesn’thappen.Todaythe media
usesour differencesagainstustodemonstrate thatwe are notunifiedinthoughtorpurpose.4.
Denominationsare usedbymanout of self-interest.There are denominationstodaythatare ina state
of self-destructionastheyare beingledintoapostasybythose whoare promotingtheirpersonal
agendas.5.The value of unityisfoundinthe abilitytopool our giftsandresourcesto promote the
Kingdomtoa lostworld.Thisruns contrary to divisionscausedbydenominationalism.
Therefore the question remainswhatisabelievertodo?Shouldwe ignore denominations, shouldwe
justnot go to church and worshiponourown at home? The answerto bothquestionsis NO.Whatwe
shouldbe seekingisabodyof believerswhere the Gospelof Christispreached, where youasan
individualcanhave a personal relationshipwiththe Lord, where youcanjoininbiblical ministriesthat
are spreadingthe Gospel andglorifyingGod.Churchisimportantandall believersneedtobelongtoa
3. bodythat fitsthe above criteria. We needrelationshipsthatcan onlybe foundinthe bodyof believers,
we needthe supportthat onlythe church can offer, andwe needtoserve Godin communityaswell as
individually.Pickachurchon the basisof itsrelationshiptoChristandhow well itisservingthe
community.Pickachurch where the pastoris preachingthe Gospel without add-onsandisNOTbased
on “prosperitypreaching.”Asbelievers,there are certainbasicdoctrinesthatwe mustbelieve,but
beyondthatthere is freedomonhowwe can serve andworship;itisthis freedomthatisthe onlygood
reasonfor denominations. AsChristiansinall walksof life,we needtoalwaysbearinmindthatas in
differentdenominations therecanbe diversityandnotdisunity. Becausediversity allowsustobe
individualsinChrist, anddisunity dividesanddestroys.
