10. There are three stages in the history of
dresses – nakedness, covering and clothes.
11. Most experts think that the fashion really began sometime
during 1400.
This is the time when clothes became more ornamental than
ever before.
Clothes could now be used to display wealth, status or
occupation, among other things.
During the 1400’s fashions were started in the royal courts.
Royalty also decided who would be allowed to wear the
fashions.
People were supposed to dress in a way that fit the class to
which they belonged.
People were laughed at or punished if they dared to dress
like royalty.
12. Fashion slowly trickled down from the courts to the
commoners. By the 1700’s, 10 years was the time
needed for a fashion to go from royalty to the people in
the streets.
As fashion became more important people learned
they could earn their living by supplying new ideas in
clothes.
For many years, fashions came from Paris, which had
become the center of clothes fashion.
Even though fashion designers were hard at work, it
still took years for their ideas to reach everyone.
Fashion news like all news in those days traveled very
slowly.
13. One way that fashion news
traveled was though the use
of Fashion Babies and
Dolls. These were dolls
dressed in the latest styles.
“Isabella of Bavaria” gave
the first life size doll to the
Queen of England in 1391;
receiving a fashion doll was
considered high honor.
14. For many years, royalty traded fashion dolls with one
another each year. In colonial times, Americans
received fashion news from France and England by
means of fashion babies – the small dolls.
In the late 1700’s and early 1800’s fashion magazines
came into being. They showed the latest Paris Styles
and helped fashion news travel somewhat more
quickly.
15. Over the years two major changes have occurred
in the spread of fashion. Fashion news travels
more quickly than ever before. Royalty are no
longer considered fashion leaders.
