2. Purpose of this trainer
• To distinguish the difference between glass
and a cold slug
• What makes a part acceptable and
unacceptable
• Common things to look for when inspecting a
part
5. How to distinguish between a cold slug vs. glass
• Glass is characterized as
a smooth to slightly
grainy, cloudy blemish
on the surface of the
part
• Blemishes of glass are
found on nearly every
part and is not
considered a defect
Shown here is a glass
blemish on the surface
of the part. This
smooth, cloudy, glass
blemish could even be
located near the cold
slug well. This is still
an acceptable part.
6. Don’t be quick to judge
• This “drool” is located around the cold
slug well area in almost every part. It is
something to be cautious about, but
does not always yield a rejected part.
• It is very rough when running a finger
across and can also be characterized as a
stringy glob
• If this is seen anywhere on the inside of
the part what should you do?
– Flip the part over to the exterior
side and look for any defect on the
direct opposite side of the “drool”
– If there is another defect on the
direct opposite, then this is
rejected
– If there is nothing on the direct
opposite side then this is
acceptable
7. • Cold slugs usually have a rough
feeling when you run your finger
across it.
• Rough does not always mean it is
a cold slug, and smooth does not
always mean it is not a cold slug.
• To determine if a part is rejected
due to a cold slug, the defect
must be shown in the same spot
on both sides of the part

defect on the
exterior of
the part
There is a
defect on the

15. How to properly inspect a CAC tank
• After inspecting the flange and parting
line, look at the interior of the part and
identify and distinguish between cold
slugs, drool, and glass

16. How to properly inspect a CAC tank
• Then flip the part over and inspect
the exterior of the part for
matching defects that line up with
the interior of the part
There is a defect on the exterior that
matches exactly to a defect found
directly opposite in the interior of
the part

19. If the part is acceptable
then verify isolators
20. Summary
• Verify flange does not have any cold slugs, nicks, or cracks
• Verify parting line does not contain any flash
• Distinguish between a cold slug vs. glass (cold slug=bad,
glass=okay)
• Common areas to look for cold slugs:
– Gate area
– Interior and threads of hose connector area
– Flange
– Around the cold slug well
– On and in-between the ribs of the part
• Verify isolators are fully seated past top of the posts
